    Greetings!

I am not much of a beer expert but several years ago I had Ten Fidy for the first time and fell in love with it. I still get it occasionally but where I live it's rare to be able to find it and when it's here it's expensive (18 bucks for a 4 pack).

Here's my question: Is there a beer that's close to Ten Fidy in taste and thickness...a clone if you will...but is cheaper and/or more widely available?

    Thanks in advance!

Ten Fidy is an imperial stout. The standard version is not whiskey-barrel-aged, nor does it contain flavoring adjuncts (chocolate, vanilla, coffee, cinnamon, etc.), which separates it from many imperial stouts these days. If you simply like the "pure" imperial stout style, relatively inexpensive, widely available examples include North Coast Old Rasputin, Founders Imperial Stout, Sierra Nevada Narwhal, Lagunitas Imperial Stout, Great Divide Yeti, Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout, and Great Lakes Blackout Stout.

If you're looking for something more specific within the imperial stout style, Evil Twin Even More Jesus may fit the bill. It has slightly higher ABV and IBU but similar original and final gravity to Ten Fidy. A four-pack of 16-ounce cans of Even More Jesus tends to be a couple dollars cheaper than a four-pack of 12-ounce cans of Ten Fidy where I am. I do personally prefer Ten Fidy, but Even More Jesus has that extra-thick mouthfeel that it sounds like you're looking for, even more so than most or all of the other beers I mentioned.

Thanks so much. The mouthfeel I think is what I'm looking for. I've tried some alternatives ...just tried a Dragon's Milk from New Holland but not "thick" enough and tasted very boozy compared to Ten Fidy. I've read reviews of Even More Jesus so I'll check it out. Thanks again.

If you want "THICK" try to find Brooklyn Black Chocolate Stout. Most of the other ones @islay should also fit the bill. Many of them are seasonal and became scarce about this time of year. Imperial Stouts don't have to be fresh so don't worry about bottling dates. If fact many drinkers prefer then aged.

It's a commonly understood everyday word that means precisely what you are looking to say, but ultimately are not saying.

    NOT. ADJUNCTS. :grimacing:

OP there are tons of options out there for sure. Let the board know your location so they can better assist you with beers that would be near you. Have you tried your local breweries for similar options?
    Cheers

I totally forgot about even more Jesus- Definitely a good recommendation and a beer I plan to revisit once I need to restock.

I think Bell's Expedition, another seasonal, is worthy of mention. Stick one where you won't notice it for a year, or two, or five.

I feel your pain. We get Ten Fidy around here but it's seldom in stock and the price point makes me hesitate when it is available. Not sure where you live, but a few of my favorite non-adjunct altered imperial stouts are North Coast's Old Rasputin, Sierra Nevada Narwhal, Great Lakes Blackout Stout, New Holland's Night Tripper, Bells Expedition, and Founders Imperial Stout. All are very good and generally affordable.

I don't want this thread to get derailed like so many others on this point (with me partially at fault at times), but I've been on the record for years that flavorings added to beer widely within the industry and completely properly are called "adjuncts," and that I believe that those who attempt to limit the use of the word "adjuncts" to mere malt adjuncts are the ones in the wrong. I'm well aware of the debate and firmly have chosen the broad definition. I go out of my way to add the "flavoring" (or "malt," as appropriate, not that those two types of adjuncts encompass all possible adjuncts) ahead of "adjunct" as a nod of (not necessarily well-earned) respect to the other side of the debate and to avoid confusion. Friendly reminder: The fact that someone disagrees with you doesn't necessarily mean that he's ignorant.

This is "right on". I, too, am a big fan of Ten Fidy. I've had all the beers noted above by islay but there's only one Ten Fidy. I'm near the end of my "Dry January" and of all the beers that I love, the one I most want to taste is Ten Fidy. All of those beers are delicious in their own right, but when you have a taste for a particular brew; one that rings a special bell for you, there is no substitute. All are class A brews but if I had to go with something even remotely close to the taste of Ten Fidy, I would go with Old Rasputin. In that class and price point, it's my next "go to" imperial stout. Good luck!

Since you don't give your location, I'd suggest that you go to your bottle shop and ask the proprietor for suggestions. He will know what's available in your area.

That is weird that is the price point. I feel like that is what ten fidy used to cost but the price point dropped to around 11-12 bucks per 4 pack about 5 years ago.

I buy much more now than I used to. Agree 18 bucks for a four pack is too much.

Depending on your location, Big Sky Ivan the Terrible is very good but has a thinner mouthfeel than Ten Fidy. Another good one is Grand Teton Black Cauldron.

Up until 3 years ago I lived in West Michigan...breweries everywhere as you know! But alas now I'm in Paducah KY...only two local breweries and neither has a thick stout that I can get into.

Thank you very much...I'll add it to my list. I'm trying singles until I can find one that I like. Hopefully I'll find either Ten Fidy or an equivalent I like by Superbowl!

Try searching this list, which has a lot of Imperial Stouts from Kentucky. Maybe read a few reviews to get an idea of what they are like.

That is so true. Years ago I was at a bar with my son-in-law and daughter for an event and had some free beers. My daughter brought me back a can of Ten Fidy. I loved it more than any other beer I ever had so I wrote down the beer and told my son-in-law to text me the name so I did't "forget" after that night. Haven't found anything like it yet!

Thanks...Dry Ground's (one of the local breweries) has their imperial stout on the list and I've tried it. I'll check to see if there are any close ones I can check out.

I know! Paducah though is way off the beaten path so most of the craft beers have to be purchased in specialized liquor stores....of which there's only two or three. Got spoiled up there in West Michigan. Breweries galore and stores everywhere.
