It's Pliny, not Pliney.

You are so, so right, but one correction - Garret Morris is the owner of Brooklin Brewery. I expect better from you. Fun fact: Brooklin Brewery is actually located in Utika... not New York.

Short explanation—the family name of the namesakes is “Plinius,” so Pliny is the Anglicized form. So it could just as easily be Pliney, but Russian River adapted the traditional spelling. And in Classical Latin the name would be pronounced “PLEEN-yoos.” But I cant imagine saying “I’ll have a Pleeny the younger.”

Yeah, lots of breweries up there in that one little factory town - Saranac, F.X. Matt, West End, Brooklyn, Olde New York, Hornell (where they make Mississippi Mud - where else would you brew it?), Cape May, 21st Amendment, Great Divide, Ommegang, there's even a McSorley's Ale House in that town.

And hey, it looks like Schaefer just moved up there, too! Well, I guess it's the same F. & M. Schaefer founded by Frederick and Maximilian, just says "Original Schaefer Co." in the fine print. But, they can't lie on beer label, right?

My upstate NY relatives will be overjoyed! (The ones that are still alive). They all stopped drinking Schaefer in the early 70s when the Albany brewery closed and the beer was all coming from "Lehigh Valley, PA" - they said it gave 'em "headaches".

That Matt's brewery is pretty old. Not as old as Yeungling, tho', which is the pride of Pottstown PA... not to be confused with Ying Ling, the Chinese beer.

Had both Pliny and Blind Pig on tap at Monks in Philly. If you twisted my arm I’d prefer the Pig, but if your a hoppy beer guy and you don’t like Pliny that’s you. Monks needs to serve the beers a bit colder, and I hate 50 degree hoppy beers.

Yeah it really should have been either “Pleen-y” (which would be willfully obscure) or “Plin-ny” as in skinny (which would be just as confusing) but there are plenty of people who’ve for a long time before the beer said “Pline-y” … so whatever Vine-y wants to call it, please let it be freesh.

All the recordings I have from ancient Rome of Romans actually speaking their now dead language show different pronunciations than any suggested so far in this thread.
