I haven't been able to brew for almost 2 years now and I'm getting ready to start preparing to brew again. I live 3 hours from Tuscon and I wonder if there is a LHBS there that people here recommend. I need pretty much everything perishable: bulk grain, hops and yeast. Thanks in advance

I know there's a decent store in Las Cruces, if you're equidistant, but I'd assume Tucson has better resources, being larger.

The online offerings seem all right at https://brewyourownbrew.com/, which has a Tuscon location. All of which makes me wonder why you don't order from an online source, since it sounds like you don't have a LHBS. Said the guy who lives 2 hours away from the nearest HBS.

Brew Your Own Brew has been serving Tucson for a long time. I know there were two other places, one called Everything Homebrew and there was a Brewers Connection location there, but think both have closed in the last year or two. Never been in there, but can only imagine Gary at BYOB would have everything you'd need.

@rocdoc1 You must have relocated to be that close to Tuscon.

Yes. I quit working in the oilfield and moved as far from it as I could get and still be in New Mexico. Now I'm retired, hopefully my health issues are resolved and I can resume brewing and drinking beer. We live 13 miles from a small town, at the end of a dirt road surround by wildlife and solitude. Life is great again, especially after I can drink beer again.

Last time I checked shipping costs on sacks of grain were more than the cost of grain. I drive through Tuscon at least once a month to visit my granddaughter so it won't be a problem stopping for supplies

I went in there a few years ago to buy Roselare blend for a cherry sour. They didn't have it, and the clerk even asked me shy anybody would even want to drink sour beer. Maybe they've improved.

Yikes. Score another one for that "knowledge" that justifies brick and mortar pricing.

I've only been to SW NM once. Enjoyed the funky old town of Silver City.

That's where we are, roughly. There's a pretty good little brewpub in town, Little Toad Creek. The beer is decent but their star is the green chile Rueben sandwich.

Once I get restocked on bags of grain I will go back to online ordering.

Once you mentioned having family in Tucson I stopped second guessing. I used to have family in St. Paul, so could stock up at Northern Brewer and MW Supplies several times a year. Damn divorce nearly ruined my homebrew hobby.

So I just called the Coyote Homebrewing/Pools and Spas in Cruces. They quoted me roughly $80 per sack of malt. Is that really the price of bulk malt these days?

That's pretty expensive. You can get pretty much any malt cheaper (not including shipping) than that online, but depending on the malt (and supplier), the total with shipping could end up higher.

ETA: Do you know any local pro brewers? Most of the ones I know are willing to let friends piggyback on their orders. I usually don't do that, because I don't want to be a pest, but it's an option.
