Ok, new beer #2, at Beaver Island Brewing in St Cloud, MN.
    Revolution V. A Berliner Weisse. 3 % ABV.

I wish this was a hot, summer day. This beer would be perfect for it. It is easy to drink. Packed full of flavor. Tart and sweet at the same time.
My review will describe it better.

There will be another new beer, however I don't know if I'll be posting, since I'll be at a party.

This one is a Schwarzbier from a local. This is exactly what I'd expect a Schwarzbier from a hip US brewer to be like. It's got a great head. Body is thin. It's opaque. The roast character is dialed way up. It's a bit hoppy. It's dry. Yeast character is minimal. There's a slight amount of acidity for balance. It's essentially like burnt toast water... and that sounds like an insult but I don't mean it to be one. It's tasty and drinkable, but it could use a bit more balance. I bet it's exactly what the brewers wanted.

That beer has lactose. Have you had other "sour IPAs?" If so, how does it compare? By "sour IPA," I don't mean the sort of thing where a brewer makes a brett, mixed culture, or aged IPA, but rather, a beer with some sourness, the hopping of a modern IPA, the appearance of a modern IPA, and extra ingredients such as lactose, fruit or flavorings (and inevitably packaged in a keg or 16oz can... never a bottle).

Yeah- stuff from Sloop, Almanac and one or two others on draught at NYC bars after work. I've enjoyed those a lot more than this one, but they were drier and I'm betting they didn't have added lactose.

Alright, last one! This is a beaut unlike the other two from a little earlier. Good to end with something that's nice to look at, hopefully it is also a good beer underneath the surface! Rodenbach and DFH's collaboration, Vibrant P'Ocean (awful name but whatever) is essentially a blend of a two-year foeder sour ale and a kettle sour brewed with elderberries, elderflower and fleur de sel, which is a fancy salt that is typically harvested from evaporated sea water; the more you know. I'm not sure what specific blend percentages are happening here, but I would probably hazard a guess that it is much more of a kettle sour than a foeder beer. The pour is, as you can tell, a deep crimson color with good clarity to it, topped off with a long-lasting slightly-pink head of sticky foam. Not much lace, but this does have awesome legs. Overall, like I said... I'm just glad this isn't a murky golden-yellow. Actually has a lot of the color from the elderberries. Nice stuff.

The nose reminds me of a cross between a gruit and a fruited sour, with a distinct funky herbal/floral component that I imagine has to do with the elderflower addition. Deep red berry notes and a bit of the signature Rodenbach sour oaky "bruin" element that you can find in their regular releases. Almost a little bit of balsamic in there, with brown sugar, a touch of oak, and red wine-like slickness. Maybe some savoriness, too? Huh, this seems like it's gonna be interesting. Should've known considering DFH's involvement and the use of the word "irreverence" on the can label, but *shrug*.

On the palate, this definitely drinks like a cheap red wine in a sense, though there is also a sweaty, savory note, some funky lactic undertones, big flavors of red berries/Meyer lemon peel, and floral notes. A slight hint of the oaky, leathery, vinegar-y foeder beer is present here. The body is heavy and rather slick, kind of pulling in odd directions as it is also only 4.7% ABV and doesn't seem like it should be this hefty feeling. Dry and tart finish with cranberry juice acidity numbing the palate. Don't really feel the presence of the fleur de sel. Huh. A fine one-and-done, and maybe even a little underrated on BA, but it's also not something I would reach for ever again. It's kind of like the yang to SeaQuench's yin, and it also has some things in common with DFH's Super Eight gose as well (which was surprisingly good if I remember right). Not sure this is satisfying my thirst, but the Citrus Got Real that I had earlier did a fine job of that, so I'm satisfied for today. Time to do laundry and catch up on these other posts. Happy NBS!

I found it intriguing, it did not refer to DuPont releases specifically

    Sierra Nevada Barrel-Aged Narwhal

The balance between the “base beer” and barrel character feels magnificent here. Regular Narwhal already has a lot of character, and the barrel presence here is at a Goldilocks level - not too little, and not too much. I feel like beer geeks tend to favor beers where the barrel presence is quite big (and dislike it when the barrel presence is too quiet)... so perhaps my Goldilocks level is not gonna be shared by others. Thumbs down for the 16oz can. Boo. The head on this beer is pure beer geek delight though. Dark and huge and dark. The hops shine in this beer, and that contributes to the balance. It’s sweet and decadent but doesn’t have to be a sipper. Glancing at a few recent reviews, it seems like folks think age will improve it. For me, that sounds like nails on a chalkboard. I’m really enjoying this.

Karl Strauss / Pure Murky Poetry Hazy IPA

Happy Sunday, BAs. Just about kickoff time. Finally time for a beer! This one comes to me via the largesse of @Bum4ever and @bl00.

Murky Poetry pours a cloudy, yellow-orange color with two fat fingers of yellowed head that leaves spotty, soapy lacing.

It has a delicate clementine-like citrus aroma with a little white pepper.

The light taste includes delicate citrus, pepper, dull grapefruit pith bitterness and mineral water.

Light creaminess in the feel with some prickly carbonation.

This is a nice, drinkable, well-balanced beer. Sort of gives an APA impression. I’m enjoying it. :beers:

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Snulip glass canned on 1/24/20. Pours a slightly cloudy dark orange with a 2 plus finger head that leaves thick rings of lace with excellent retention. 4.25

Smell guava, garlic, onion, tangerine, marijuana, apricot, and a hint of grapefruit rind. 4

Taste follows so much going on but very balanced guava, tangerine, garlic, onion, marijuana upfront with apricot and grapefruit in rather tame finish at 10%. 4.25

Mouthfeel is big, plenty of of life but still rather gentle, maybe a tad dry, and it goes down very easy at its size. 4.25

Overall this is really nice, not a true NEDIPA but a very tasty brew all around. I am looking for more from Liquid Riot Bottling Company. Only heard of them a week ago and 2 for 2 so far. 4.25

I don’t want to drink the quantity of beer that I drank in my youth. I just completed dry January and would rather focus on quality beers. Savoring the taste , aroma and appearance. To that end, I submit Jjjulius by Treehouse

Mikerphone Brewing's Teleport Massive, a Berry Berliner Weisse, 5.25% ABV; 4.09 over all

Pours a very effervescent purple/pink with some fast falling pinkish head. Not much head retention or lacing, looks like a berry smoothie

S: Tart Berries and lots of them

T: Tart berries with just a little sweetness up front. Some dryness to go with blueberry tartness as this warms. Finishes tart, dry and with plenty of berries & just a little lime and salt

MF: Medium body with moderate carbonation

Very refreshing, nice take on the style

Good afternoon, all, and Happy New Berry Blonde Ale Slash Super Bowl Sunday! My new beer is Left Hand Flamingo Dreams Nitro, a "Blonde ale with raspberries and blackcurrants added." I picked this one for Game Day because I was looking for a Miami-themed beer and this was about as close as I could get. Overall impression was favorable, but for me this doesn't quite make the grade as a stand-alone sipper. It begs to be paired with some sort of food, like maybe cheese and crackers or something. YMMV.

My SBLIV dinner: Kansas City BBQ pulled pork, Rice-a-Roni (the San Francisco Treat), and - apropos of nothing - fresh veggies and dip. I forgot to check on the rice and cooked the bejeezus out of it. So... it's KC FTW!

I'm posting this because I forgot to post it on WBAYDN earlier. Coolest TV theme music of all time. YMMV, but then you'd be wrong.

And in case you missed it: the guys on Fox Sports Radio this morning were talking about the over/under betting line for how long it would take to sing the National Anthem. The line was at 2:03. I just timed it at 1:47. Wonder what the line is on how long the halftime show will last?

Love in the Dark, an Imperial Stout brewed with fenugreek, cacao, vanilla and hazelnut in collaboration between English breweries Cloudwater and Track (10% ABV).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy, mocha-colored head. Smells of roasted, caramel malt, with a strong fenugreek note, as well as chocolate, hazelnut and lighter notes of coffee and licorice.

Taste is a good balance of roasted caramel malt, a strong, bittersweet fenugreek presence, coffee and some milk chocolate, lighter hazelnut, vanilla, licorice and just a hint of herbal hops. Finishes bittersweet, with a medium bitterness and some fenugreek, coffee and hazelnut lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a rich body and medium carbonation.

Fenugreek is quite an interesting plant that I've worked with in baking before. It has quite an intense aroma and needs to be used carefully, which they definitely pulled off because even though it comes through quite strongly here, lending both sweet and bitter maple and aniseed accents to this, it never feels overpowering and actually harmonizes quite well with the coffee and licorice notes, bringing to mind spiced coffee, while being balanced by sweeter milk chocolate and hazelnut liqueur.

This definitely has a rather unique, complex flavor profile to it, largely because of the fenugreek, but there are lots of little nuances to it that all work together quite well, with a great harmony of sweet and bitter notes. Looks absolutely gorgeous, with a luscious, thick and creamy head, but is just a tad lacking in mouthfeel, unfortunately.

Our friend @lordofthewiens raises an interesting scenario in his opening post. I haven’t been a “volume” beer drinker since I was in college at Indiana University from 1981 - 1985. Then, we pounded copious amounts of beer, with Old Milwaukee Light at $3.99/case the usual choice, with the occasional Bud keg (or 3) mixed in for a big party to feel like big shots.

Since then, I’m a “2 or 3 beers” beer nerd, and that’s most nights. I don’t drink more on the weekend, or less on weeknights, it’s a couple or a third. My work cohorts, when we’re on a work trip as we were last week, will comment when I stop after the 2nd or 3rd beer, “C’mon, we know you want another beer!”

Nope, I really don’t. I know my limitations, and I despise feeling “drunk,” so I stop before I get there. If I’m with a group that wants to get hammered, I’m cool with that, but that’s not my gig.

What is my gig is watching the Super Bowl and enjoying a couple of excellent beers. Tonight, I have a couple of beers from my local.

This beer pours a hazy golden yellow color with a foamy white head. The nose is citrus and the stone fruit and melon referenced on the can. I’m very intrigued.

The taste features the citrus, but the melon and stone fruit flavors are equal partners in this beer, which limits the bitterness. The mouthfeel has a little bite, which I appreciate.

This is a style Bare Hands does well, and the melon and stone fruit flavors are an interesting spin.
