No one is comparing this to BBT or Derivations, especially secondary value wise.

But it is punching way above its weight class for a talented brewer with a previously humble setup turning out better BA stouts than most midwest brewers with significantly more resources.

I would argue that if you’re rating it 5 stars and paying $150 for it, you are.

And that’s cool, this is all relative and personal preference anyway. I personally don’t consider Shawn Berns an elite brewer or cellarman (quite good, yes), but that’s just one idiot’s opinion. But people used to say this about 18th Street (comparing them to FFF) or Mikerphone. I wish this guy nothing but the best, but if you don’t think there’s at least a modicum of hype behind it (see SeanBond’s response above about feeling the need to try it now), you’re kidding yourself.

Well they aren't homebrews anymore. These were brewed at Ellison Brewing in Lansing, MI.

edit: I do agree that reviews are inflated, part of that is due to the fact that there are fewer checkins and also many are from people who have an interest in them being highly sought after, I don't deny that. If these had a larger release the reviews might be a bit less biased. That said, they are quite good.

Derivations go for like $700-1000 tho... BBT $300-400

I’ve had a SP stout or two, and they’re very good, and if any of you ever see me paying secondary prices for any of them, please slap me in the face, call my mom, and have her tell me she is disappointed in me.

I can't believe I'll say Toppling Goliath's KBBS was worth every penny. Managed to exceed the hype somehow. I wish I could taste it blind to see if I'd feel the same way about it. Going in, I really wanted to trash it as I just couldn't have fathomed I'd be handing over $100 for one 12 oz beer. Yet, there I was, and after the dust settled, I'd pay $100 to drink another one.

How would you have felt if you had paid $1,500 like some people did with the first batch?

It’s crazy to think people pay that. Batch one was 12 dollars for 12 oz on release day. It’s just beer people! I would pay 1,500 for a lot of things but not a beer...

you can help the training regiment. “Knocking over beers” is going well, but we are still working on “throw donuts at @croush whenever you see him with a beer in his hand.” Next semester is going to be tough: “a brief history of the Girl Scouts, and why they only deliver randalling supplies once a year.”

With the exacting precision revolution has demonstrated over the last few years, Im starting to be surprised reading about such crazy prices. You’d think with a market this competitive, we’d see the secondary market pricing drop, but from the commentary in this thread it doesn’t appear the secondary market listens to the real market.

No joke, he has his kids working on this. I showed up on his porch with beer, and his kid threw some sort of stuffed flamingo at me. I got back in my car and cried for 30 minutes.

Logic would dictate that affordable tasty options on the shelf would make people less interested in the crazy limited hype stouts. But in practice they still want them, just proves it is mostly about having rare and limited things more than just about taste or drinking beer.

You're totally right, and it's because a lot of people are just "fad drinkers." Similarly, I joined a couple bourbon groups recently (one on Reddit, one on FB) to be more in the loop about drops, and it's just a constant stream of people posting relatively mediocre bourbons that everyone rushes out to get because they're limited (while way better stuff sits on shelves). I mentioned this in the HA thread, but it's the same reason Half Acre keeps switching up their year-round releases; no point offering Navaja year round when the people most likely to drink it (the "hardcore" hobbyists like us) will usually skip it for a something new or limited.
