I've noticed inconsistencies with places doing half pours, and it doesn't make a lot of sense to me.

I can understand the reason a brewery might want to NOT offer flights (considering how time consuming it can be to pour/assemble) , but I've been to a few places (both breweries and beer bars) that refuse to do a half pour and I don't understand why

I like the idea of half pours for variety sake... and often times it's rare that I want 10, 13 or 16 oz of any single beer. for a brewery to flat out refuse half pours doesn't make sense - it literally takes less time (or the same amount anyway) to pour half the glass

one beer bar in Cambridge, MA (Meadhall) said it was a licensure issue, and also that they had a contractual agreement with the breweries whose beer they serve to only do full pours and to only do it in branded brewery glassware. seems ridiculous and needless to me, considering other places (Bayberry Beer Hall here in RI for instance) are always willing to do half pours, or even flights, and they have a great variety of well-known breweries on tap.

anyone have any insight about the reasoning behind this decision?

It can also be a pain to stock another type of glassware, especially if they have limited real estate behind the bar.

But it's very easy to simply fill up the glass you normally use half way.

I saw you post earlier today, you were listening to Huey Louis and turning 60 when I was cramming Disharge and GBH through my headphones in the 80s. I'lll leave alone from now on.

But then you get inconsistencies: "He got more in his half-pint than I got in mine!" Unless they want to invest in marked glassware....

I usually do full pours, that being said, at least allow 5 oz pours of stuff that is 10%+ abv. A lot of times I’ve already had a few through the night and want to try a big BA stout, if I’m already buzzed 10-12oz may be more than I’m looking for,

Lol, this is the same bar that posts a literal photo on their website of a chalkboard with beer names with breweries, not dated or anything. And for example if I look there now it shows "DDH IPA" as one of the beers on tap. That really clears things up.

I honestly do see a lot of correctly branded glassware in the Untappd check ins, but there are several that are generics. But to your Bayberry point, that must be Meadhall's CHOICE and it is not the breweries forcing them to do this. It is more like Meadhall gets stocked with free glassware from these breweries and in return has to serve their beers in the appropriate glasses. Seems odd to paint yourself into that corner and sacrifice the ability to offer smaller sized pours.

That honestly seems like some BS with the licensing, are breweries really losing out on that much money offering half pours? Hell, Long Live Beerworks in Providence will even do single sip pours for free just to make sure you like it before you get in in a flight, half, or full pour! And though it's a bit off topic, I love Bayberry, always incredible beers on tap. Have you tried the spicy chicken sandwich they make? Just awesome

Sorry, but if you want a beer you should have to drink a beer. Maybe only have 2 or 3 a day and then go back. It's good, it'll get you out more.

See, I disagree. I would rather go to a brewery or bar and have multiple half pours in an attempt to find more more beers that I will enjoy. Obviously at places that don't offer half pours, I won't order a full pour of something I might dislike. However, if it is something I've established I like, I won't hesitate to get a full pour

Yeah if I was local I would agree to this. I never get tasters, because I think that is a pain in the ass for the server when they are busy, but I do like half pours when I drive downtown (maybe a couple of times a month). I would much rather have 4 half pours in a session rather than a couple of full pours. I can understand why the don't want to do it, when you get into Double IPA''s and high abv beers it can be a pain in the ass to determine what is half of a 10, 13, 16 oz pour.

This all seems strange to a member from the UK. Here a sample is given on request, always free of charge. Any bought beer has to be measured and only a third, half or full Imperial pint. Works very nicely too.

Most of the breweries/bars I go to do 1/2 pours but they charge more per OZ for them.

I think it is mainly because of the cost of glassware. A regular pint glass may cost them a buck or two, but those half size ones are costlier because the lack of volume the glass makers are selling of them. But at the same time, the brewery should be able to make more money on half pours if they do it right.

I rather like that places where you can get a beer or three aren't 'one size fits all' these days. Like other types of establishments, I'd prefer to patronize the places that cater to my needs, and ignore the rest. And if I do that there are still more than enough to fill my needs.

These places that don't serve their beers in a certain way have already decided to market to a certain demographic; if it's working for them, then the rest is up to the consumer in the end.

I was in England back in September/October, and I loved this. Whether it was a bar or a taproom, half and third pours were almost always available.

I live in a very small town, but we do have a local brewpub. We like it mainly for their green chile Rueben sandwich, but also because my wife can get a 10 oz beer and I get my standard pint. If she had to buy a pint, I would end up drinking the warm, flat half of it she doesn't finish.

Do they charge the same price per OZ for the 10 OZ as they do the standard pint?

This and it likely means more glassware to clean as well.

I have no idea and it doesn't matter to me. If I pay the same but leave 1/3 of a glass of beer she doesn't want I have still lost money.
Honestly, I buy an average of six beers a month there so a few cents is unimportant. It might matter if I was there daily drinking 5 or 6 beers, but I never drink more than 2 beers(usually just one) in town because its a 15 mile drive home.
