I work for one of those biiiiiig beer/wine stores and we just started carrying Evil Twin. When I put the pricetags out I said to one of my disrto-reps, "Great. Another expensive-ass import that I'm sure is tasty, but I know is overpriced that will probably just sit on my shelves. $10.49 for for a 11.2oz bottle? Are you kidding me? How much must this cost at a smaller bottle shop?" Then I notice its contract brewed brewed like four hours from here.

Where does a brewery get off putting import prices on import sized bottles that are brewed domestically? I am all about drinking fresh/Drinking local, but this is one deceptively "local" beer I will have to pass on. EVIL TWIN YOU MAKE ME SO ANGRY!!!!!!!!!

    Phew! I feel better.

Anyone else have something along this line to sound-off about? Or can anyone explain something I don't understand about this whole contracting thing? I'm sure it's not cheap, but you don't see Terrapin charging $75 for a 6-pack so what gives?

Anyone know why their stuff is so expensive if it's brewed domestically?

I have some info i got from Mike(http://beeradvocate.com/community/members/mikeincharleston.325987/) at Westbrook Brewing who explained to me that there is an extra markup on this one because they sell it to Evil Twins distributor who then sells the beer to our distributor.

So I guess I'm really just mad about distribution.

Yeah. Middle-man markup. Bums me out due to all of their beers I've tried being solid beers, but never holding up as "worth it" at the high prices. Biscotti Break would be a great beer if it were $9.

We've started to get Evil Twin this year also... I've tried most of the bottles we get and feel they are all over priced....and only Imperial Biscotti Break is worth drinking...but at $15/btl it's to pricey to drink often..

It definitely is shocking how much their bottles are. Especially considering how hit and miss they are. I usually wait for reviews to see if it's worth the price, but by then it's gone.

You should be complaining to your management thad those kinds of beers dont sell well and that more money can be made by moving product that does.

We don't do the 11.2 bottles. Only bombers, cans of hipster and kegs. The 11.2oz are imports. Evil twin does import alot. We are the only Brewery in america brewing for them and we only do some stuff, they have many over seas breweries brewing for them as well.

It is $11.50 at my local (Ridgewood WB) and worth every penny. "Even more Jesus" Spanish edition is also VERY good!

Even though a portion of Evil Twin's beer (and Mikkeller's for that matter) is brewed 'domestically' they still have to go through the importer (12% for Evil Twin, Shelton Brothers for Mikkeller) as Evil Twin has entered into a contract that allows them to distribute their non-US brewed products as well. They can't be selective and simply bypass the importer with the Westbrook-made (Drake's, Mercury, etc.) products.

So, extra person in the distribution chain means higher cost - that part of the equation is fairly simple.

It's a trade-off. There are US breweries that go through Shelton Brothers (Jolly Pumpkin, Anchorage, etc.) rather than making arrangements on a state-by-state basis; it saves time and broadens distribution area quickly, but results in a higher price point.

Bottom line - if you think Evil Twin beers are overpriced, don't buy them. Buy something else instead. No need to complain about it.

I'm not gonna spend a whole lot of time on answering this, but if you feel the urge to call someone out in public at least don't lie. I did not as in I never have brewed a beer in the US and released it in 11.2 oz bottles. I haven't even done it in 12oz bottles, which would have made your lie a little easier to believe, cause that the format is actually used in the US. Seeing where your store is I believe you are talking about a beer brewed at Westbrook. Well my friends, Westbrook does not bottle in neither 11.2oz or 12oz. so we might have a troll here.

Anyway, back to the discussion about my (and my collegues) beers being too expensive.

If you work in the industry you kind of should have figured it out by now shouldn't you? You blame me directly (quote: Where does a brewery get off putting import prices on import sized bottles) for the setting the price. Do you honestly believe I set the prices?? I don't remeber showing up at your store telling you what pric to put on my beers, but I could remember wrong.

    Simple facts:

    1. The breweries I use makes money on brewing for me.
    2. Then I have to make a little money (so sorry about that, but I have 2 kids and they also need food on the table like other people).
    3. Then then distributor makes money (next time you see a distributor at your store, ask them about their mark up ok?).
    4. And then the retailer makes his mark-up which I know for a fact is ofte doubling the price from the distributor or even more (I even own my own bottle shop in Denmark, surprise, I know excactly how it works!)

So my question to you is: How much do you actually think I make on a bottle of beer? Say I had a beer in 11.2oz brewed in the US costing $10.49 (as explained earlier it doesn't excist but lets leave it at that). What is your guess I make on that bottle of beer? From your rant I would say you probably think what, $4-5 a bottle? Well my friend, if you think that I suggest you start brewing yourself, cause you don't have to brew a lot of batches of beer a year to be very rich. I'm not, so I might be doing something wrong :slight_frown:

    Thanks,
    Jeppe
