You should take this idea to the master brewers over at Bell's. I'm sure they've been wracking their brains trying to figure out how to make Hopslam taste better, and this probably never occurred to them.

Lickinghole Creek (VA brewery) makes Nuclear Nugget, a DIPA also brewed with honey. I call this VA/poor-mans Hopslam. Not necessarily because its poor, just because when I think DIPA with honey, I think Hopslam.

I really like that beer, just sad that Bells doesn't distribute here in Nor Cal. I always thought I could taste the honey, now I'm not so sure...

I think they just need to make less of it

I feel like the grocery store near me *just* got rid of 2019 Hopslam that they had on sale for months, and I'm chuckling that it's already "Yay Hopslam" time again. Not really my style of beer but I see why people like it. Kind of like Two Hearted or even Bigofoot (both of which I like significantly more) these are old school beers which are driven not by pillowy mouthfeel but competing fruit | malt | bitterness unlike the "NE" style which is only fruit and then whatever they are doing ti make it thicc + creamy. Not a style I go for even on a weekly basis but they have their place in the hierarchy for sure.

Had Nuclear Nugget when visiting in VA several years ago and at the time thought it was similar to HopSlam...just verified my review!

You don't detect sweetness if you buttchug it.

More importantly they make those beers with the cute lil' bears on the bottle!

So I think I mentioned in another thread comparing Flying Dog Double Dog with Hopslam. I’m gonna go ahead and assume that DD doesn’t use honey. I notice Hopslam being a lot more hot compared to DD, which is 2% stronger. I get nearly no heat from DD. Perhaps the honey in Hopslam ferments out cleanly enough to create a pure ethanol note, as opposed to a stronger beer that is likely all-grain and doesn’t reek of straight booze burn.

I don't think it would be worse, but I don't think it would be any better, either. A 10% TIPA is going to be quite sweet regardless, and that note of honey is one of the standout traits about Hopslam.

Reading this makes me wish I didn't have to wait until next year to try it again.

And no, no one else thinks Hopslam would be better without the honey. Hopslam is great just the way it is.

I remember when Hopslam was one of the craziest beers I could get on the shelves just a few years ago, and I had to rush up to the store when it came out just to get 1 bottle.

Now I'm drinking fresh Pseudo Sue and my 2 cans of Hopslam are mehing in the fridge.

It's a decently good beer, but at the price point there are so many better options out there. I went into my store yesterday and they still had a wall of Hopslam just sitting there.

Tbh the honey is one of the few elements of Hopslam I actually enjoy.

I like the touch of sweetness, but I'm not a fan of honey. Could use moleasses or toffee.
