Drove up with a buddy yesterday for the first time during winter and had a magical visit. It's jaw dropping seeing the amount of snow up there. Also on-site bottle of Vera Mae was incredible, my first experience with the beer.

How have the roads been this winter up there? I haven't managed to go up since November but making the journey for the Cuvee in two weeks. Want to be sure the rental is appropriate (typically go with an SUV).

I took a rental SUV as well that was AWD. Zero problems. The roads were clear all the way to Taylor Rd. and the that bit was no issue, just drive slow. We hit a couple snow squalls in NH (coming from Boston) that got moderately intense until we got on the other side. Just keep a close eye on weather and you'll be alright.

And if Taylor is ever bad, another option is taking The Bend Rd from 16, up to Willeys, then Cemetery Ridge / Garvin Hill up to the 3-way intersection with Taylor. It’s a lot flatter and has fewer blind turns.

The mud has appeared as of Thursday's thaw. I take the Garvin Hill Rd. approach, and the hills had enough drainage to stay a bit drier. Worst was the flats on Hill Rd. without drainage. Some folks in a low-slung station wagon got jerked to the right by the ruts and were stuck in the snowbank. Temps in the 50's this week, so make sure you've got good tires, and some clearance. Mud season has begun in the NEK!

Shaun Hill: Beer dream of world's top brewer started in NZ

Write-up that touches on Hill’s admiration for NZ, which kick starts “the first of a series of world-wide 10th birthday events” and the debut of Anna Balaton

The piece also touches on the 2014 expansion struggles, as well as Hill’s “obsession with mouthfeel and texture

Did he get Lukr to train him and his staff or did he try to do it himself?

"No-one seemed obsessed with the overall experience and sensory satisfaction that comes with texture and mouthfeel – after all, you're putting this in your mouth, it shouldn't feel like razor blades, or be too bitter, it should be pleasant."

This statement seems so completely obvious, but it's a consideration that was not only rarely given value or spoken to in the culture or industry, but some breweries and consumers were openly advocating for harsher and harsher feeling brews, while simultaneously putting down words like mouthfeel.

Thanks for this! I’m sure my (formerly white, now brown) Subaru would have made it the way Google wanted to take us, but adding Willeys as a stop on my way saved me some stress on this rainy day.

Willey’s is a must stop on the the way in or out of Hill. Can always find some nice shelf bottles, but I go for the deals on the Jasper Hill cheese.

What a place, I’m glad I stopped. Outsider opinion, but I’m thinking it doesn’t get any more “Vermont” than that store.

2-for-1 last week - buy a Winnimere (almost done for the season) and get a free Hartwell with it.
