It's not the 'contract' or 'gypsy' brewing that is driving up the price, it's the additional importer layer of distribution. There's an extra set of hands Evil Twin beers have to pass through compared to Pretty Things, because a portion of their brewing takes place outside the US. There's one more mark-up in the chain; the Westbrook-brewed beers can't go directly to the state distributor - they have to go through 12% first.

No, I saw they were in Chicago on FB dining at places that are super-expensive. 20 bottles of Biscotti Break should cover the tab at a couple. They're like rock stars without even having to be in a band.

Without putting anyone on the spot, neither the breweries I brew at, the distributor or the bar/retailer, I can tell you that if I made zero dollar on a bottle of beer you would probably end up saving, maybe $1 at the store. Thats a fact you can believe or not, but I'm telling you now thats how it is.

This year I'm a little over 2000bbl. Those 2000bbl are brewed at 10 different breweries all over the world. So in average I brew 200bbl per brewery. Do you honestly believe I get the same prices as Brooklyn or Terrapin (without knowing Terrapins annual production, but I do know that Brooklyn brews a bit more than 200bbl where they contract)? Why I don't just find a huge brewery to brew at to get better prices? Tell me which one has extra capacity they wanna share and that can still keep up the quality, and I'm ready! I have looked for 3 years without finding it (or maybe I have now, but thats a different story .

    Thanks,
    Jeppe

    This is getting ridicolous.

Again people, if you don't know the truth and are justing putting bs out there, I will move on, cause I can't spend time on trolls like this.

I ate at Next yes. Did I pay full price, no. Why? Because I work with them.

I ate a schwa yes. Did I pay for it, no. Why? Because they love what I do and I love what they do. Mutual respect.

I ate at Publican. Did I pay for it, no. Why? Because a friend did.

I live in a two bed room apartment with wife and two kids. I drive a $8000 car. I spend an average of $500 on clothes a year. I rarely pay for a beer. I even get my coffee beans for free.

So, pretty much the only money I spend is on one thing: Restaurants (when they even let me pay, which is actually not that often because I have a lot of friends in the industry).

So my friend, now you know me a little bit better, so I hope from now one you have a little more self respect than to call me out on things you don't know shit about.

I can't believe I'm even defending myself here.

    Thanks,
    Jeppe

And btw. I work 70-80 hours a week. I own Evil Twin, a bottle shop, a distribution company and maybe soon something we still don't talk about. Up until a 1½ year ago I worked full time as a school teacher running those 3 business at the same time. And now someone like you tells me it not fair I make money.

I dont know you, I don't know how much you work or how much you make. And I also don't know what you spend your money on.

And I sure wouldn't call you out for all these things I don't know about you. You should be ashamed of yourself.

Jeppe, say what you will... But I know that in many cases, retailers (bottle shops, not restaurants) certainly are NOT "doubling" the price they paid. If you're comfortable charging exorbitant amounts of money for beer, since there are obviously tons of people with the money to burn buying it, so be it... but don't make shit up.

I had a really long post typed up about standing up for the little guy, but then I realized that getting into an internet argument with a successful brewer over his pricing and methods would be incredibly silly and a huge waste of time, so instead I'll say... Bikini beer sucks, Yin and Yang on tap is awesome, Disco Beer sucks. Stop charging so much that you cut out people who work in the beer/restaurant industry, please.

Jeppe, ignore all these haters who are spewing lies and crap about you and your business. Evil Twin makes a lot of good beer and many of us are happy to have your beer available regardless of the distributor markup. I traded a Parabola for my first Imperial Biscotti Break, loved it, and bought two more when I had the chance. Keep doing what you are doing and don't be too put off by a few bad apples on the internet.

Well said. People who aren't in retail don't really realize the hours involved. If they don't like a product, don't buy it. If they can't afford a product, work harder but don't bitch.

wow the entitlement of some on here is embarrassing. A beer cost a lot, so what. It isn't like brewing is some lucrative field where brewers and owners drive luxury cars and buy small islands. I would love to take my home brewing to the next level and start doing it professionally, but one of the reasons I haven't even looked at it is because I know it would be serious pay cut from my engineering job.

Even if these brewers were going to 5 star restaurants and buying up vacation homes, so what. It is none of our business what prices they set, how much money they make, and what they do with their money. I like ET and Mikk beer, but pass a lot on it due to prices. That is my choice, not their fault.

Complaining and being curious about pricing is one thing, but making accusations (especially about personal spending) is another.

Let me get back to my first post in this thread. Do you have the courtesy to guess what I make on bottle of beer? And do you then have the courtesy an self respect to say I'm sorry for calling you out for setting your beers at too high prices?

I don't know if you homebrew, but if you do I'm pretty sure there is always someone who loves any of your beers.

P.S. I saw bottles of Jolly Pumpkin at a bottleshop upstate New York at $20 a bottle. I didn't send them an email and told them they sucked because of that. I'm not that kind of person.

Although I'm sure you're feeling a bit attacked here, you will gain fans from your honest responses and the fact that I know a little bit more about you now than I did an hour ago...Thanks bro. Keep up the good work, and consider me a new "fan".

How dare you enjoy yourself, Jeppe, with the money that you made from customers knowingly and willingly buying your beer at the price it is (regardless of who sets it)? For shame!

A buddy of mine bought a 6 pk of Hipster ale for $20. Is that a normal price for that beer?

    Le sigh. I said please!

The only point I'm getting at is that I do what I do because I love it, and because I get to make a lot of people happy (on a much smaller scale than you) doing it, which translates into not making very much money. I'm assuming that you brew because it is what makes you happy, and maybe because you get to make others happy as well. Due to what I make, and the fact that I'm trying to save up money to one day have my own restaurant, or brewery, or what have you... It is very rare that I can afford any of your beers. When I have one that isn't very good (subjective, I know) or kinda-sorta messed up (disco beer, yeast problem, happens to everyone, I know), it makes me very sad. When I have one that is VERY good that I know I wont be able to afford more than once a year, it makes me even more sad. It's very rare that someone as busy as you would come into contact in an open forum with someone like me, so I figured I'd throw my plea out there. I even stated that I understand why you charge what you do, since there are so many people out there willing to pay what it costs. Sorry to have offended you in any way shape or form, you certainly shouldn't take it as an insult to your personal character.

PS: before the train of wealthy guys comes in and says "STOP COMPLAINING POOR GUY!1!1" I'm aware how economics works.
