Although it is still cold and snowy in most places across Canada as per predictions from multiple credible sources has indicated that spring will be sprung early this year. In that spririt on the 1st day of March, in the year 2020 I thought what better way to chase the dreary winter weather out then to post an early signup for this year’s edition of CANBIF.
The first day of spring is March 19th, everyone has survived through the Christmas/New Years holiday season, and signs of life/warm weather ahead are all around us.

This round there are a few changes that I hope will make things a little easier and more it interactive so please read the fine print.

I will start by saying thank you to all the previous members of BA that have participated season after season, year after year. Without all of you this trade continuing wouldn’t be possible. I have always enjoyed participating as well as now organizing this great trade. It is a great opportunity for a fantastic experience for those new to trading/CANBIF and those returning. No one should come into CANBIF expecting a box containing whales and rarities, but from time to time that happens. What you can expect is something new and local firstly, with a consideration of your likes/dislikes.

The process in a nutshell is this so as I have previously stated please read thoroughly and understand the rules/details of how we intend to proceed. Please play close attention to the following details so there is no confusion of expectations of CANBIF. If you can meet them, especially the specific dates no considering just watching this round and figure out for next time if it right for you, also previous rounds can be found with a google search for a better taste of what is about to come.

So here is the meat & potatoes:

    • Registration:

Email/conversation sent to Electros with FULL ADDRESS DETAILS; City, Province, post code, phone number and personal email before midnight on Sunday, April 5th, 2020. This information will be stored by myself on this rounds spreadsheet and is intended for your sender as well as emergency contact purposes for myself should any problem arise along the way. Trust me it happens each round so please send it all…

    • Participants who have never traded (singularly or in a group trade) need to inform me and I would advise on acquiring a styro-shipper if you have never shipped through the post. This is just a suggestion but certainly not a requirement. Any lost or damaged beer boxes the sender is responsible to replace and contact me to work through the situation.

    • Please also inform me if you have regular trading partner on BA. I wouldn’t want to pair you with someone with whom you exchange with or have done so frequently. The fun about this trade is getting local/new to you brew you wouldn’t find in your home market.

    • Pairing will be available by midnight no Wednesday, April 8th, 2020, and no later but possible earlier depending on the number/complexity of the roster signed up for this round.

    • PLEASE once you have received a message from me with your targets information then message me back as soon as possible to just reconfirm one last time all information in regards to your shipping address is CORRECT and you have seen your targets info.

    • For anyone interested on how pairing consideration is given here it is in a nutshell… First and foremost previous participants to CANBIF on the basis of where they have sent to as well as received from in previous rounds is looked up by myself. Every round that I have organized is saved as a reference to that the current round will hopefully be getting/sending to some place in the country that is new and or not the same as the previous round. A balance is always tried to be struck in regards to the above and to break down of participants geographically as to be fair to all participants. All are chosen at random once a general geographic location is determined. With new participants targets and senders with be completely at random.

*** That be said ANYONE that is interested in a second box please indicate this in the first email response to me and I will take it into consideration. Second boxes will then be paired with others requesting one and or depending on the location balance amongst participants. ***

To be clear as well know that your target is not your sender. 1 sends to 2, 2 to 3 and so on… Senders rarely if any will also be getting a box from those to whom your shipping one too.

Once all target information is sent out the forum then is open to then post your LIKES/DISLIKES of styles and preferences that are your favourites as to make it easier for your sender to make selections of what to send. This is the HINTS portion of CANBIF. Also senders are encouraged also posts hints about there target in an attempt to see if he/she is able to figure out who is sending to them. It is a lot of fun!

If you have an Untappd or Rate Beer account please post it as well as send it to me with with response email when signing up

    • There should be no communication between target and sender. If there is any case for concern it should be relayed to myself.

This is the surprise factor of CANBIF that makes it interesting and fun. Who as well as where your sender is shipping from/to remains a mystery.

    • You must be willing to ship between Thursday, April 9th and as the latest Sunday, April 26th, 2020 at the latest (weather permitting).

If there is any question that this shipping date cannot be met then please don’t sign up…

    • Amount of beers/Volume in millilitres to be sent:

Participants are expected at a minimum to send 12 different beers at a volume of 7000 ml. This roughly works out to 8 x 650 ml + 4 x 473 ml, but containers sizes can obviously vary as along as there is at least 12 different brew and the minimum volume has been met… there is no maximum fill levels. That is left to the discretion/generosity of the sender. Of what is sent at least half of the bottles should be local to your home province. The rest can be an assortment of other provinces/USA as well as international offerings.

    • I urge ANYONE that is new to CANBIF to please use google to easily look up previous rounds for a feel of the festivities, and what to expect. Also don’t hesitate to send me a questions as well as concerns. I am here to help during the trade and regular monitor my inbox to swiftly address and resolve any problems that could arise throughout.

    • Swag is not required, but is optional.

    • Once you've sent your box in the post put to your target I ask that you send the tracking code to me.

    • All participants that sign up are expect to post at least a list of what your box contained here on BA for the beer **** part (Hints & Hauls). This is a showcase that is fun for all and gives everyone a taste of what is being shipped out. It is fun to see what others have received but it also acts to those that were on the fence observing the trade an idea of what they missed out on perhaps giving a push to join us next time.

Please let myself know if you have any questions/concerns and also maintain communication.

Again, anyone new to CANBIF I suggest googling previous rounds to get a feel of what the experience is like and if it is right for you.

To all those who are returning; welcome back, and to those new; welcome! Please tell your friends, especially those who are returning that know of someone who would enjoys and or doesn’t browse BA that frequently.

Also any feedback about CANBIF I do appreciate. I want this trade to continue going forward considering that BA has now merged with Untappd.

Also I was thinking about the creation of an adjoining Facebook and or Untappd forum for the trade so please tell me your thoughts about this and anything else.

    So... LET’S GET IT ON!!!

For the usual sharing of preferences and such...

LIKES: Coffee in beer! Like everyone else on here, I enjoy old ales, barleywines, and BBA stouts that aren't diabetes sweet. I'd be happy with anything barrel-aged that isn't stomach-dissolvingly acidic or tastes of diacetyl. I like quads/dubels, but find tripels too spiced. Anything dry and clean. Wee Heavies. Gimmie that crazy ABV shit. Well-made or innovative mead (Schramm's, B. Nektar). Or beers that incorporate mead/wine or grapeskins/must.

DISLIKES: Smoked beers. Rum barrel-aged. Lactose in beers other than milk stout. Most spiced or fruited beer. Most recent IPAs - DIPAs are great, but not NE IPAs. I don't tend to like IPAs with a piney profile or hop burn/aggressive hopping either. As a rule, I tend find most lagers skunky.

You can find me on Untappd with the same username, and I'll send Electros a link to my cellar.
