I don't usually do this, but I just had such an amazing example of a West Coast IPA by a traditional, Franconian brewery that I just had to cross post here from WBAYDN.

Seems like a rather good opportunity to revive this long-standing thread for 2020!

I haven't had many good experiences with craft styles from traditional, Franconian breweries so far, to be honest, but this just blew me away. An incredible, bitter, resinous West Coast IPA with a strong caramel malt backbone that combines German and American hops in a really impressive fashion, with the Huell Melon hops standing out particularly. Then again, they have collaborated with Fat Head's in the past, so I guess that explains a lot.

I also had their Weizenbock and wet-hopped Grünhopfen Pils before, by the way, which were both excellent as well, plus I got their Doppelbock and Imperial Stout sitting in my fridge, which I'm really looking forward to now. I have no idea how well-known Weiherer/Kundmüller are, I certainly never heard of them before stumbling across their beers at this awesome Getränkemarkt that I occasionally visit, but I would definitely recommend seeking them out.

I've been to that brewery. They also pour at the Bootshaus im Hain in Bamberg. They do make good bier.

While this didn't blow me away quite as much as their IPA, it's still a rather enjoyable Imperial Stout focused on the roasted malts and herbal hops. I will definitely seek out more brews by Kundmüller/Weiherer in the future.

How strange! I was recently gifted a Weiherer Rauchbier (long story) but I've had a terrible head cold and so have been holding off on drinking it. I couldn't remember if I'd had it before or not, but now I'm looking forward to it!

Serious question - why "Rest of Deutschland Biere"? Why not "Bayernbiere" or even "Maerican Biere"? Do you not recognize Bayern's rule over Franken? :stuck_out_tongue:

Dude, I really didn't give it that much thought and just picked the most broadly defined thread on the front page. Bavaria, and thus Franconia, is still part of Germany, you know, as much as those Bavarians might loathe that fact :stuck_out_tongue:. But sure, in the interest of inclusivity, I'll change the thread title.

I'm not sure the Franconians are happy about it either! Re: the thread title, I was just curious, it's all good.

Actually, in the interest of keeping this thread a little more focused, I'm going to change the title once again. I'm not sure why there was a "Märican Bier" thread on the Germany forum in the first place, but I won't stop anyone from opening a new one :stuck_out_tongue:.

I think it was for thoughts on American attempts at German styles with some crossover thoughts on German attempts at American style beers.

I feel like I should warn people that Kundmüller actually set 18(!)-month best-by dates. Mine was bottled mid-December 2019 though, which is probably a big contributing factor for it tasting so great.

Apparently, some retailers actually insist on 18-month best-by dates instead of the more common 9-12 months... :astonished:

I guess I might as well post the last Kundmüller in my fridge, which came as a little bit of a disappointment to me, actually. Still looking forward to their Imperial IPA brewed with Fat Head's, which I will hopefully be able to pick up at my favorite Getränkemarkt next week.

I guess they wanted to experiment with a dry-hopped Doppelbock and it's just not working for me because it's overly dominated by the quite floral and grassy hops, while the malts add little but sweetness here, that is at least somewhat balanced by the rather distinct bitterness though. Certainly a very different, unique Doppelbock that is very hoppy for the style, but not in a good way, and feels somewhat one-dimensional as well.

I enjoyed an Augustiner Maximator on Sunday for £3.40 with the good exchange rate. It was bloody lovely. Edelstoff for £2.90 too which as always from the wooden barrel was magnificent.

That was in Garmisch by the way where I also enjoyed Mittenwalders Marzen and their Dunkel. Both very tasty indeed.

Canned Jever won a slot at the monopoly for launch this month which I'm happy about. It's been a few years since I had it last, and it's nice to see it being delivered here within a month of packaging. The aroma is fresh and mildly yet noticably herbal hoppy with some light sulphur notes. The taste is tongue-smackingly bitter with a bit of herbal hoppy notes, a light malt flavor in the middle and with a dry finish. The bitterness sticks around in the aftertaste and is definitely more pronounced than in other major German pilsner brands. It is very refreshing. It tastes like I remember Jever tasting, and I think it's a superb dry German pilsner.

@gavinbrooksbank -- are those LPs stacked in the background? (sorry, I'm easily distracted by the most trivial things )

So...has anyone tried the new Bitburger/SN compilation? Heading to TJs today to see if I can grab some.

So...to answer my own question...picked up a 6pk today. Canned Jan 8 2020 with 1 year best-by code. $12.99/6pk at a customer of mine hit my pain threshold haha.

According to label, it's a 5.8% ABV pale lager - the color definitely shows the darker side of the pilsner malt. Pours a nice billowing head, aroma is mixed of grassy hops and biscuit-y (Weyermann?) pilsner malts. I believe I read elsewhere 30 IBUs, first sips it comes off slightly boozy, slightly acidic but as the palate acclimates to the blend, it works well. For me it tastes even stronger than 5.8%. Carbonation is spot on.

This is a very flavorful beer. I don't get the "triple hopped" as much as the cracker/biscuit malt base seems to dominate the senses rather than the hops. Almost like Bitburger on steroids. Any fan of German beer will have to try this, it's a pleasant change of pace from the 4.8% ABV mega lagers that we are quite used to consuming. Prosit!

Sounds like an interesting beer. It was going to be released here in early April but due to the virus situation the monopoly has decided to discontinue limited releases for the time being. I was looking forward to trying it since the Oktoberfest collaborations never made it here. Oh well.

Concerning the color anything darker than pilsner color would mean that either some Munich and or Caramel malt is being used me thinks. Considering the color shade, and them using both Pilsner, Munich and Caramel malts for their new Kellerbier, a similar malt mixture seems likely, adding both color from the Caramel malt and added malt flavors from the Munich malt.

You know, I thought about that too before I wrote it. It's definitely possible, but I have brewed high(er than normal) OG pilsners before and they also ended up being considerably darker. I was also using Weyermann malts and this really took me back to those beers. Again, you may be right @Crusader just basing that on my experience and the "classic" pilsner recipe which usually does not contain Munich or Caramalts.

Saw on a German site today that it's being called an IPL which immediately made sense. It was boozier than the 5.8% and my first thought was actually that it's an imperial pilsner. I am anxious to hear other people's thoughts and read other reviews.
