That’s usually the case. I’ve spoken to quite a few brewers, some of which are in wine rich areas, and that is the number one response. Also wineries dont often give up their barrels - they find other uses for them once they’re deemed “done”.

Have you tried homebrewing a stout with some kind of wine addition, be it using chips, cubes, spiral, or, as made popular by Trillium, pouring some into it? I'd be interested to know how if anything has worked well.

I never have but it’s definitely on my list for future adventures.

I also forgot to mention that, at least from what I’ve seen, breweries that do acquire wine barrels tend to use them for sours over stouts. I imagine it’s pretty hard to nail down exactly what kind of impact a wine barrel will have on a beer before you try it. The last thing a brewer wants is a tangy, acidic profile from the wine barrels in a stout they just spent months aging. That type of barrel profile works real well for sours.

From what I understand (not 100 percent sure), the wine barrels that it was aged in were Screaming Eagle ones the year the fires ruined the wines. Screaming Eagle is one of the highest-demanded "garage wineries" in California, wines go for $500 and well beyond I believe. I think there was some reference to it being a top winery but maybe an understanding that they couldn't use the name in marketing.
At $10 a bottle, it is the closest thing many of us will get to Screaming Eagle!

That’s awesome to know. I noticed they did not name the winery the barrels came from - now it makes sense. It really is an incredible beer.

Grimm sold (still sells?) a $40.00 solid brass bottle opener. As crazy as a $100+ glass is, a $40 bottle opener takes the cake for me.

What the hell is this $100+ glass everyone is talking about?

Florida guy checking in. Perihelion might've been my favorite beer I had at wakefest this year, and DB fluffernutter is fucking incredible too. Higher recommend trying both (preference to perihelion though)

What the fuck is going on. I’ve been staring at this pic for the last five minutes in total confusion. I thought af least there just have been a little hyperbole at play but wtf?

At the same time though let’s chill out. Those are some broad brush strokes Smokey. I agree we don’t need to be drinking straight from bongs but let’s be open minded

Magnify occasionally has $50 glasses from a local glass blower that does a lot of other glass items. Even $50 is too rich for my blood, but they guy does some funky work.

This beer was great. I have a bottle still (for some reason) at home from when the first bottled it. I loved that beer.
yeah $50 for a glass that is eventually going to break unless you lock it up, is just stupid. Also pricing as a whole at Magnify is awful IMO

Veil has done some stouts with wine barrels (DB Sleeping Forever, Vermicious Knid series) that I would recommend if you are interested. The whole VK series is pretty unique.
