It's usually sufficient to refresh the page, but yes, sometimes clearing your browser cache becomes necessary in order for the picture to show up for yourself. I've also rarely experienced that even clearing the cache would not make the picture appear, but this is something that will resolve itself in time.

I've only had it happen once where the new photo didn't show up for like 24 hours and thats what Todd told me. So you're totally right, its probably a rare thing.

There is no doubt that the process for adding pictures to the BA beer database is an anachronism. It is overly restrictive on the specifications, and a PITA to get pictures that both meet these specifications and are visually "good" pictures. Improving this is on the list of issues, but no doubt requires significant behind-the-scenes changes to the data base.

(BTW, it is my opinion that this fussy restriction is what led to so many "non-original" photos being uploaded to the data base... JMO, though.)

However, that is a very small corner of BA. Your decision that "contributing to BA is more of a pain-in-the-ass then it's worth" based on just this is unfair.

Crop it to a roughly 1:2 ratio before resizing .
Also, in the case of tall bottles like that , with no distinguishing features/labels at the top, consider cropping closer to the label, & leaving most or all of the bottle neck out of it.

I am having trouble uploading these two photos. What am I doing wrong?

They were both resized to 150x300 using resizeyourimage and after I select the photo and select UPLOAD,it appears to be doing something before returning with "No file was uploaded".
This seems like a response that points to something on my end. There is a a photo in the file, it is the same as I have posted above, yet nothing works.

The file size is too large, much too large actually, which is a little odd because the picture quality isn't that great, at least for the second picture. These pictures are over 5mb in file size, but the maximum file size on BA is 20kb.

RYI does have an option to adjust file size after resizing (image quality), but I doubt that using it would be practical with such large files. This is probably something that is best resolved using camera settings.

Resizeyourimage said they were less than 5k. The attached photos above were linked from postimage, if that changes anything.
Thanks, though I'll look into it.

When I downloaded them, they both showed at over 5mb in properties, but when uploading them to RYI they did indeed appear much smaller in size. I was just able to upload the second picture successfully, not sure what your issue could have been. The first one does not even appear to be in the database yet, which obviously makes uploading a picture impossible.

EDIT: I will add the first beer and upload the picture as well.

Lite Thinking used to be Lite Reading. The same GABF gold beer, but rebranded due to a conflict. I just requested an edit to reflect the new name of Lite Reading which is already in the database.

    Thank you.

RYI is down again for me, this time for over 24h so far. Anyone else having the same issue? Have any other viable alternatives surfaced since this thread was started?

It was probably mentioned already (didn't go back and look), but since I generally avoid "upload your stuff to our website and we'll do stuff to it and promise not to do anything nefarious" services, I was inclined to look for an app that would remain local to my PC.

    This one works for me:

Thanks for the tip, however, I cannot seem to reduce image size to less than 35KB using this tool and even to get down to that I need to set image quality to "20", making the image look like crap. Am I doing something wrong?

The file size adjustments are kind of hidden (their UI could use some work). Click the "Settings" button to the right of the "Output Format" drop-down. You can adjust the output quality (and, hence, file size) there. The "9" (90) setting works for me to get the file below 20KB.

That's the one I've been using. Setting this to "2" (20) only reduces file size to 35 KB for me and makes the image look like crap.

Addendum: @Snowcrash000 - I follow a multi-step process for preparing beer pic uploads to the BA database.

    1. Using Photoshop, I crop the picture to a 1x2 aspect ratio.
    2. Again, using Photoshop, I reduce the image size to 800x1600 pixels, using a reduced, but still high, compression quality.
    3. I load this image into FastStone, set to JPEG "90", width exactly 150 pixels.

Works every time, usually actually around 15-18 KB size and decent quality (considering the pixel count and file size.) I actually get better picture quality from FastStone for the final reduction than I get if I use Photoshop all the way.

A bit of a PITA, but for me, the Photoshop steps are just a couple of minor extra steps, since I typically do a bit of mild color correcting anyway, so the image is already loaded into Photoshop.

What works for me is using FastStone to resize the image and then opening and saving that image in Paint.NET to reduce the file size. This is an additional step though and results in "okay" picture quality...

This is what I love about RYI, you can do everything at once and even get decent image quality out of it.

Here are images from my last upload:

Original photo, cropped to 1x2, saved as JPG, max quality (file size 1.2MB):

Photo reduced to 800x1600, saved as JPG, somewhat increased compression (reduced quality - file size 157KB):

Final output from FastStone (150x300, 90 quality, file size 15.2KB):

I've been doing some experimenting and the easiest way I found to do this all in Paint.NET is to crop to 1800x3600, resize to 150x300 and then save with 83 quality to 19.7 KB. Very fast and simple, only two steps in the same tool. The image quality may not be great, but it's good enough and that's basically a sacrifice I'm willing to make for the ease of use.

Resize your image site still looks to be down. Any other suggestions on how to get a photo of a beer uploaded to a profile page?

Not interested in downloading an app but using something online.

I just used https://www.photoresizer.com/ to do 8 images for beers. Not nearly as intuitive as resizeyourimage but still works - I first adjusted the size of the source image to something much closer to the desired size, then used the crop function to get to the final dimensions (file size turned out to be around 16k).
