When shopping and a beer has a particularly clever artwork on the front of it how often do you end up purchasing it over something that doesn't jump out at you? If I started my own brewery right now and just hired a bunch of genius artists to design can art do you think I could make it profitable?

Good question, I believe it’s definitely part of the marketing. A label that appeal to me will make me take the decision, along with the beer in question style, ABV and maybe even its original location (though good beers are being produced all over the world these days).

If the package is all art and no information (name, style, brewer, ABV, etc.), forget it. I don't have the patience to pull every can out of the dazzling array of "cleverness" to decide if it is a beer or style I actually want.

So, for me, information is first. And second.

Art work? Unless it is offensive, it hardly matters to me.

I love can art and hands down have bought beers solely for that but I won't repeatedly buy a brewery just for art, beer has to be good. I might buy one here or there just based on art but thats about it

I don’t think I’ve ever bought a beer because of label art. More than a few times the art has made me not even look at the beer.

I don't think it directly influences me to buy or not buy a beer as far as liking the label. It can definitely draw one's eyes to look at it more often and thus, sell better. But it doesn't put me off of buying a beer or not if it doesn't look good objectively.

Love some artwork on cans but it could be the Mona Lisa and I wouldn't buy it if it were a sour or some other style I don't like, And as @dennis3951 mentioned I have passed on beer with nasty art.

I have never made a beer purchasing decision based on packaging art. In my opinion they should spend their (my) money on more important things.

I admire the can art but it is not why I buy a beer. I look for style, brewery, age, etc. Typically when I go to purchase beer I know who I want to get or am familiar with the beers in the store I frequent.
I do believe can art sells beer though, I think it works on those less informed or new to beer and they grab the flashy can or such assuming good art = good beer.

People who say that packaging has zero influence on them are lying (perhaps to themselves).

I like information first, the more, the better.
I am attracted by a clever name for the beer. That's probably a BA thread right there?
The art? It's not expensive, PSLs, Pressure Sensitive Labels make it cheap and easy to do small batches of cans.

If it's The Brown Note, then yes. If at least one of the words Anheuser, Busch, Budweiser, or Bud appears anywhere on the package, then yes.

I buy beer based off of reviews on here and Untappd. So, art has no impact on me.

Great art might get my visual attention on the beer shelf, but unless it's the beer that I specifically came for, I'm not buying it. My purchase decision is made before I leave home.

I won’t judge the beer by its label art, but it can definitely influence whether or not to take it home. As much as I want to judge the beer on its merits alone, what I know of a beer/brewery before I take the first sip still gets in there too.

I don't think can art has every swayed me to NOT buy a bottle. I'd be lying if we didn't pick up some cans because of the label though (Trial By Wombat).

Last year Drekker started distributing here, and I started buying their beers partly because their artwork is real compelling in that freak/monster/skeleton kind of way. They reportedly have hidden "easter eggs" in the artwork, but I've never looked for them. I've kept drinking their beers because I like them, not because of the art. Because they favor sours and IPAs, I've gotten into those styles. Another monthly drop coming Wednesday.

    If a beers sucks, the art doesn't matter. And I've had plenty of world-class beers that had no artwork at all. But if you can get great art, catchy names, and great beer then the art can increase sales, as with Drekker. Here are some of theirs;

Most definitely. Even when I am aware that I should not do so, I just do. A nice label will make me buy a beer that I don't know much about but an ugly/boring label will generally not deter me from buying the beer.

And I have had more than enough nasty beers that came in pretty cans to know that good beer and good can design do not correlate at all. But I still give in sometimes.

Some IPA cans look like modern art disasterpieces.

I'm a Brown Ale fan and similar to IPAs, it's easy to identify them by the label art, and that's because the labels are usually brown for the Brown Ales. Same with Black Ales to an extent.
