Has anyone taken a visit here while in Munich? Is it easy to get to and importantly is it worth doing? We’ll probably go Sunday lunchtime for an afternoon of beer.

Any other Suggestions for a wee trip out? We’ve done Andechs so fancy somewhere different.

Anything hugely of note in Munich itself that I might not be aware of?

My wife and I took the train to Freising for a visit to Weihenstephan. It was a great visit with great beer.I will probably go to Ayinger on a future visit to Munich, so if you go, report back your experience.

We went to Ayinger once. We went into the brewery only to find out the the taproom is elsewhere in town. The Schnitzel I had for lunch was bigger than the plate!

I've done the tour a couple of times. Check the days they offer it. Take the S7 to Aying, then it is a walk to the brewery or the restaurant/tap. The old brewery was next to the restaurant, it looks like a barn.

You could also stop at the Forschungsbrauerei in Perlach in the way back. That walk was a little more involved, but today we have smart phones to guide us.

The only things I have to add to this are:
~ Check that you can get a tour in English if needed
~ How could that tiny brewery have supported them until they moved to the new, beautifully designed brewery? It's worth taking a little stroll around the old brewery, and if you're driving that's where the parking is.
~ You're not too far below Hallertau so it might be interesting to check that out as well depending on when you go. For me it was enough just to drive up the autobahn and see some of the fields cleared while others were still being harvested.

Are you looking for beer related? History? Scenery?

A walk around the Viktualienmarkt is always fun, as is a tour of the Englischer Garten.

Munich has a nice science and technology museum with interesting exhibits, and a great art museum (wish I'd spent more time there now knowing they have some masterpieces).

I stumbled on the Weiße Rose memorial by pure accident and it prompted further research into the story. There's also a quick train ride for a sobering visit to the Dachau Memorial.

I never got to see the Olympic Grounds, but I hear that's interesting. But there's also a Beer Museum right off the Marienplatz and the Hops Museum outside town in Wolnzach (actually further than Freising).

Boat ride on the Isar? Surf the Isar?

Second Forscungsbraüerei if you've never been -- delicious beer.

It's a short walk from the bahn. They have a well stocked gift shop which is somewhat unusual for a German brewer.

Ayinger has a restaurant across from the Hofbrau house if you
don’t get to Aying. We went to Tegernsee awhile back. Nice train
ride and good beer at HB Tegernsee.

Thanks guys...after looking at tegernsee I’m swaying towards that especially if it is a nice sunny day. Looks terrific and easy to get to, Bayern ticket be best/cheapest way I take it?

We went there by train and it's well worth the visit. We had a sunny but cold day and still sat outside. IIRC we used a Bayern ticket for 4 people. A lot of people got off the train a stop early and hiked the rest of the way,

We used BoB. It’s a private train. I don’t think the Bayern pass
will work. It wasn’t to expensive iirc. There’s also a boat that goes
around the lake. It’s kind of a upscale area. Some of the German
big wigs during the war had places there.

Yes. The train is the BOB. A Bayern pass works on that line. We were in Bamberg in the mornimg, Bayern pass was the cheapest to Munich. Got checked in, my wife held the pass up and said this sucker is good until 6AM tomorrow, where are we going?

The BOB has three car sets from Munich. It stops and splits twice. Make sure you are on the carset going to Tegernsee.

BOB is BayerischeOberlandBahn (that is close).

    Website.

Yes the Bayern pass works on the BOB. It doesn't work on the premium trains.

If I were to use the Bob again, Bad Tölz Gas at least one Brewery. I would check the other towns.

You're probably right, it may have been a BOB ticket. It was 4 years ago, so I don't remember. It was something like 37 Euros for four of us to make the trip.

Aying is a favorite of mine.
I love the beer garden at the brewery tap in town, the Ayinger Bräustüberl (formerly Liehards Keller).
    http://www.ayinger-braeustueberl.de/

Freising is also very enjoyable because of both Weihenstepaher and Hofbrauhaus Freising.

Weihenstephaner beers are great in their beer garden outside their brewery restaurant:
    https://www.braeustueberl-weihenstephan.de/

HB Freising has two places in town that I've been to to drink their beers. They are the first two places listed here (they list them as beer gardens, but they also have restaurants connected to the beer gardens:
    https://www.hofbrauhaus-freising.de/en/our-beer-gardens-2/

Erding is also on the s-bahn line. I think their weizenbock (Pikantus) is fantastic. You could do what I did last year and visit Erding, then hop on the bus and go to Taufkirchen and visit the brewery there....nice little beer garden, too.
    http://www.taufkirchner-brauerei.de/

Then catch the bus again and stop at Grünbach. Another great little brewery and beer garden. And another good weizenbock.
    https://www.gruenbacher-weissbier.de/index-htm/

If you wanted to venture a little further out, you could visit Traunstein (3 breweries, including the very good HB Traunstein and their fantastic gastro-weiss/weissbier special edition) or perhaps Mallersdorf-Pfaffenberg for the duo of Klosterbrauerei Mallersdorf and Stöttner Brewery, which are a 30 minute walk from each other. I particularly enjoyed Stöttner's beers. Friendly owners.

You've been to Germany before, so it goes without saying to double-check open days and opening times.
