Well, the weather is slowly starting to get warmer and brighter around here and so I find that the beers I'm consuming are getting lighter as well. I've never thought of myself as much of a seasonal drinker, but I really noticed a certain craving for darker, stronger, preferably barrel-aged beers during this winter, which unfortunately aren't always that easy to find here in Germany, at least not very good ones. I don't have a single Stout left in my basement, but am starting to dig out my Saisons and Lambics now, of which I thankfully still got a rather nice selection. I've always felt that Lambic is actually a style that does equally well in the summer and winter, as it's usually light-bodied and with fruity highlights, but also rather complex and funky, making for a nice beer to enjoy by the fireplace, should you be blessed with one. Still most of my Lambic selection remains intact, while there were numerous times that I really wished for a nice, rich Bourbon barrel-aged Stout during the cold and dark Season. In any case, I'm looking forward to warmer temperatures and to drinking some of those Saisons and Lambics, as well as perhaps trying some more German Lagers and Hefeweizens than I usually partake in, although Weizen is actually a style that I've always rather enjoyed and is just a perfect summer beer in my opinion. Who knows, I might even start to explore Kölsch a little more.

Hello everyone, and welcome to New Beer Sunday, where we like to drink beers that are new to us and share our thoughts with the community in the form of a review. However, don't be shy, noone expects deeply complex, cicerone-level reviews here. Just let us know what the beer looks, smells, tastes and feels like to you in whatever form you wish. This is really is all about sharing your beer with the community and having a good time with it. However, please keep in mind that this is not WBAYDN, so please refrain from posting beer without your thoughts on it or music videos here. Also, for future reference, anyone can start this thread as long as they include a review with their beer, preferably with a picture as well.

Dark White, a Saison brewed with spices by Belgian Brewery Fantôme (4.7% ABV).

Pours a cloudy, deep amber coloration with a large, creamy head. Smells of doughy, slightly caramelly malt and fruity/spicy yeast esters of green apple, pear, gooseberry, clove and white pepper, with just a hint of freshly mown grass.

Taste is an excellent balance of slightly sweet'ish doughy, mildly caramelly malt, prominent fruity/spicy yeast esters of lightly tart green apple, pear, apricot, gooseberry, clove and white pepper, light hoppy accents of tropical fruit and grass, some quite subtle funk and an additional spiciness that gently unfolds ever so slightly in the aftertaste. Finishes with a very light tartness and bitterness, with some fruity esters and spice lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth, almost velvety, mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

Another excellent Saison from Fantôme that exemplifies the complexity of their yeast culture and is enrichened by some additional hoppy and spicy accents, with the tartness being rather light here and very little funk coming through, making for a very complex, yet quite subtle balance that is just exquisite. The spices are also used rather subtely here, making it difficult to tell where the estery spice ends and the additional spices begin, although apart from the clove and pepper, there is perhaps some allspice, anise, cumin or cinnamon to this. All in all just an excellent balance of sweet'ish malt, both hoppy and estery fruit notes, light bitterness, tartness and spice, as well as very subtle funk.

I'm not really big on food pairings, but I have to say that this went quite well with steak and country potatoes. I think a lot of people prefer to pair rich food with equally rich beer, but to me that is just overkill and I really prefer to pair rich, rustic food like this with a light beer that doesn't take away from it as much. Although a light beer with a certain complexity to it is certainly prefered, making a Saison such as this the perfect match in my opinion.

So, if you would like, please feel free to also share your food pairings or simply thoughts on what foods your beer might pair well with today as well. This is by no means expected, of course, I just thought it might be a fun and interesting thing to do just for today's NBS.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz Snulip glass, not marked when it was canned but I trust late February, I think they mark it on the top of the rack and a owner of the best store in my area gave it to me to sample. Pours a hazy yellow orange, with a massive 2 finger sticky white head that leaves loads of thick streaks of lace as it slowly settles yielding excellent retention. 4.5

Smell peach, mango, ripe melon, blueberry, apricot, and grapefruit rind. Really pleasant and inviting. 4.25

Taste follows peach, mango, cantaloupe, hints of blueberry upfront with apricot and grapefruit in the bold and balanced finish. 4.25

Mouthfeel is bigger than medium, soft gentle carbonation, a touch sticky not dry, and at 8% easy drinking, but huge on flavor. 4.5

Overall until they arrived in NH 4 or 5 months ago I had not heard of them and almost everything I have had from this place has been excellent and this one is no different. What I do like about this one is it stands out for not being one dimensional and I think I could pick it out of a lineup with other excellent NEDIPAs. 4.25

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass canned on 2/23/20. Pours a slick used motor oil black with a 2 finger light brown head that leaves a thick collar of lace as it slowly settles into a thin layer of bubbles, with excellent retention. 4.75

Smell is cocoa nibs, vanilla beans, roasty coffee grounds, and sweet toffee. 4.5

Taste follows one dimensional in the best way possible. Milk chocolate, vanilla, Expresso, and toffee simple but rich and incredibly tasty. 4.5

Mouthfeel is bigger than medium, creamy with gentle carbonation, maybe a little dry and it works very well, and at 7.5% it drinks a tad bigger but really easy drinking. 4.5

Overall Bissell Brothers has been on fire lately, they keep producing really impressive beers and this is another. Highly recommend. 4.5

Good day BAs! @Snowcrash000, thanks for starting today's thread! I'm looking forward to arriving in Bamberg in Mai, COVID-19 permitting, and hanging out at Schlenkerla and Spezial some, along with Mahr's, Fassla, and other bierkellers and brewers. I love Bayern!
Well, yesterday Mrs. Lizard went on another hoarding expedition. We now have a couple of years worth of hand sanitizer and other weird items, including dog food (We don't have a dog!). Since we live 0.3 miles from a grocery store, this seems needless to me, but what do I know? Anyway, today's New Breakfast Beer is:

On room temperature shelf at Franklin Beer, Franklin, PA. $ 10.00 (Including tax)/six-pack of 12 oz cans ($ 0.139/oz). Reviewed 3/15/20.
Can bottom stamped “Best By 06/02/20”. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 42 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Light yellow, hazy.
Body – Light yellow, opaque. When held to direct light, light yellow and opaque.
Head – Large (Maximum five cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, medium density, short retention, diminishing to a five mm crown and rocky partial cap.
Lacing – Fair. Wide band of mostly small bubbles with some holes which rapidly expand. This quickly evolves to torn curtain lacing.
Aroma – 4 – Light citrus aroma from the hops, no maltiness.
Flavor – 4.25 – Very pleasing citrus flavors from the Citra and Galaxy hops, along with a slight sweetness. No malt flavors. No alcohol (6 % ABV as marked on the label) taste or aroma. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. Aftertaste is slightly bitter with a long hang time.
Palate – 3.25 – Medium, approaching creamy, medium carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.25. Delicious! Cheap! I’m going back Monday and stock up.

    Rating 4.07, rDev +6.5%.

Clear body with a bright golden hue; decent carbonation; lasting one-finger thick head. Very faint hop aroma; pine and floral notes discernible. Big fruity taste initially, berries and melon giving way to a nice hop bitterness sliding into the finish. Medium-light body; crisp.

Except for the lack of strong aroma, this beer is well-crafted and tasty.

Have a good Sunday NBS. Not much going on, just a normal week of unemployment. I got in touch with a person for a Mechanical Design Engineer Position on Wednesday and had a phone interview. It is with an automotive supplier that makes Jeep and RAM accessories. Everything I was hoping for was initially promised, so I will follow up tomorrow and see if there is any updates. Going to be playing video games and guitar to pass the time otherwise. Skyrim needs some work.

Trader Joe's 2019 Vintage Spiced Ale. Haven't had one of these in over 6 years. Should keep up the tradition. This was incredible. Lasting thick head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big raisin, plum, fig, pear, apricot, red apple, peppercorn, coriander, cardamom, clove, anise, cola, brown sugar, roasted nuts, and toasted brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of chocolate, cocoa, licorice, herbal, floral, grass, and yeast/toasted earthiness. Light herbal, floral, grassy, roasted bitterness; and yeast spiciness on the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-full body; with a very creamy, bready, and fairly sticky mouthfeel. Super smooth/soft, minimal warming alcohol. Perfectly balanced between yeast, spices, and rich malt complexity. Not overwhelming on any aspect. This was far better than the other two I had previously! 4.28

Thank you @Snowcrash000 for the great start to NBS.
New Mexico has 10 confirmed cases of Coronavirus. My local Walmart looks like it has been ransacked. The kids are out of school for the next three weeks. Cancellations abound.
    We'll get through this.
Today seems like a good day for a stout (actually any day is a good day for a stout). I found this beer languishing in the back of my fridge. Banshee and the Beast, an imperial stout aged in Bourbon barrels and Irish whiskey barrels, with an ABV of 10.25%.
Black color, small tan head that fades quickly.
    Roasted malt and booze aroma.
Chocolate up front, a little coffee. Some bourbon. Couldn't really taste the whiskey.
    Medium-bodied.
Another great stout from Clown Shoes.

Happy Birthday to @Shanex; forgot about it on the last post but hope whatever you imbibe in will be great, aside of the world health crisis and all.

Singlecut Softly Spoken Magic Spells. Fantastic NEDIPA. Lasting fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge tangerine, orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, berries, citrus peel/zest, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate wheat, white bread dough, light honey/toasted malts; and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; very creamy/bready malts, some sticky hops, and light resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness; no hop astringency. Very smooth/soft, minimal warming 8.6%. Feels like Simcoe, Citra, and El Dorado hops. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a nice sized bready malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Spot on style as expected. 4.23

This is a special beer that I opened to celebrate @Shanex's birthday. Charcoal black color, with minimal foam/head retention. The aroma of vanilla is very strong, which is accompanied by aromas of chocolate, coffee, and bourbon. The flavor of vanilla was strong at first, but chocolaty sweetness, coffee, bourbon, and malt emerged with additional sips. The feel is silky and smooth. There is minimal carbonation, and it is quite sweet. I really like vanilla-forward barrel-aged stouts, and this is a really delicious one. The combination of cacao, coffee, and vanilla was blended very well.

I’ll be sampling a couple of new beers today (my birthday). It will be a quiet day, I’ll cook some socca and throw a few pizzas in the wood-fired oven.
    This morning’s brew is Interboro’s You’re All I Need - Sabro, a DDH IPA
The ale presents as a golden can pour with a 2 cm white foam cap. The aroma is floral with tangerine notes and a bit earthy. The flavor profile is broad, clementine, coconut (not a fan of that in beer) and a bit of mint, are detectable. The mouthfeel is relatively light. This brew definitely provides an impression of the Sabro hop.

Beautiful, semi-cloudy straw yellow body; plenty of lively carbonation rising; head is thick, dense, and rocky. Excellent subtle nose; very mild malt note overlayed with some delicate esters and floral notes. Balanced and nuanced flavors; very light cracker; slightly yeasty; great hop bitterness, low-key. Light body; soft, nearly pillowy; semi-dry mouthfeel.

This offering is perfect for anyone looking for a light tasting yet flavorful lager. Excellent balance and depth for the style. It does not disappoint.

Another day of holing up in the 'Fortress of Solitude' while Mrs. BeerGoot battles her illness (probably just the flu - she didn't get vaccinated -- again). I'm doing fine. Still spending time disinfecting cabinet handles, light switches and various other things at least twice per day (no matter what illness she has) plus doing house-husband chores like shopping, cooking, bed making, and dish washing. And Rocket the Wonder Dog faithfully remains by her side throughout her ordeal...

It is a significantly cloudy dull straw color. Moderate density soapy white head. Fairly good retention.

It a smells florally with a distinct lemon, light grains, and a hint of sulfur.

Crisp and highly carbonated up front and all the way through, although there’s a touch of creaminess. That lemon drop is there with lots of floral flavor with some almost gin like qualities and the bitterness rules. Especially in the dry finish. A bit of mineral aftertaste as well.

I’m far from an expert, especially when it comes to deciphering the differences between a German, Bohemian, and Czech style pilsner, but I think it’s unarguable that it lacks in clarity regardless of the style. This strikes me as what it is listed as otherwise. An American made German pils. While it should swing in favor of bitterness vs sweetness, this one is probably a hair too bitter. That doesn’t mean it isn’t enjoyable though.
