I could just see someone in the future with their spray bottle of everclear trying to explain themselves to the police officer that pulls them over, lol.

Litchfield Distillery in CT is producing hand sanitizer. They are giving it away free to emergency and medical workers, and local community members who need it. It has to be distilled to 160-proof, so I am not sure how breweries wold be able to do this since they don't distill.

I saw a sign at one distillery that was producing it (on Facebook, not in person) 1Bottle: $4. 2 Bottles $95. Not a profiteering move, but to limit it to one per person. (no updates as to if anyone had taken them up on the 2 bottle price, and what they would do with the extra $$ if someone did.)

I heard a report today on the radio that Ford is looking into respirator manufacturing, but has no timeline when they will come off the line.

It is one thing to go set up an assembly line, where do to parts come from. What part faces critical shortages. Can that part have extra tooling produced to crank out more parts.

These respirators will be in need when the crest hits midApril. Will any of the carmakers be in production by then?

There are many breweries in MI that have beer and distillers licences. Griffinclaw and Kuhnhenn to name just a couple. Oh, New Holland too.

Yeesh. With that being the case and with this being a product to protect one's health, I'd hate to have to rely on sanitizer produced by one of the 7000 craft breweries. Despite the logic of your statement above, 450 North failed to take fruit puree dilution into account when they labeled a beer as 8% ABV when it was actually 2.56%.

Yeah, it sure doesn't make much sense to me that Ford or GM can get involved quickly (and the concept of assembly plants themselves involved is pretty remote - the tool and die sort of equipment in the plants is pretty basic and "manual/one piece at a time", not set up at all for production of multiple parts). Parts plants, stamping plants - yeah, maybe.

But didn't both companies spin off their parts divisions a couple decades or so ago? Damn, I can't even remember what they were called :grimacing: - Ford's started with a V, and GM's was...
    ....(Hold On)....
Oh, yeah - Visteon and Delphi.

I just read that GM is looking at using a plant in Kokomo IN that makes some electronic parts. It is GM now, but back in the day it was Delco Electronics, then Delphi.

    Here it is.

As long as it’s 60% abv it’ll work. Then you can drink it.

No needs for that vodka, Tito's makes hand sanitizer now!

Gah, beat me to it. Does anybody else respond on the first impulse rather than reading the entire thread?

"The world’s largest beer and spirits companies have both announced they’ll be pivoting some of their production and logistics to produce millions of bottles of hand sanitizer around the world. The moves come as many brands look at ways to mobilize their extensive resources to help battle the global spread of the coronavirus that causes COVID-19...."

Went to Rock Town Distillery today. They have hand sanitizer for sale that they made. One bottle limit per person. At opening there was a line around the block. Although, with everyone standing six feet apart, the line was probably shorter than it looked. Either way, I won't stand in line for alcohol in any form.

There is actually an FDA guidance PDF being sent to breweries and other manufacturers that are capable of "compounding" hand sanitizer right now. I'm looking at it right now. If provides guidance on how to make approved solutions based on either ethanol or isopropyl alcohol, with the remaining ingredients being glycerin, hydrogen peroxide, and purified water. There is a very real shortage right now and they are letting anyone capable of doing so make and sell these solutions. Breweries commonly purchase drums of both alcohol types to use as sanitizer sprays so it's not a big jump to mix a couple other things in and bottle it.
