Hello and welcome to another edition of NBS!

I had recently got back on the mountain bike this week and put in about 28 miles. Feels good to be back. I am way out of shape and need to lose about 20 lbs, but it'll be easy. Trails are a little damp right now, but it'll dry back up early in the week. I have plenty of time to burn while still being unemployed due to the virus, so should make it worthwhile. Still have plenty of games to work on as well, started a few new ones last week.

Feel free to come in and tell us your experience of a new beer you have tried today. Make sure to include look, smell, taste, feel, and overall what are your final thoughts about it. Pictures are encouraged as well, something nice to look at.

Epic Big Bad Baptist - Quintuple Barrel. Fantastic as expected. Lasting rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, coconut, whiskey, brandy, oak, toasted almonds, biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of molasses, fudge, dark fruit, smoke, char, herbal, grass, pepper, and yeast earthiness. Light herbal, grassy, roast, charred bitterness; and whiskey/brandy/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and fairly full body; very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety/bready, and lightly slick/sticky/chalky/tannic mouthfeel. Lightly increasing increasing bitter/tannic dryness; no cloying/acrid/astringent flavors. Dangerously smooth/soft. Mild increasing warmth of 11.8%, and lingering barrel booze after the finish. Fantastic balanced super rich malts, cocoa, coffee, coconut, almond, caramel, and whiskey/brandy barrel presence/integration. Light residual sweetness with lingering dryness. The salt enhanced the flavors instead of providing salinity as expected. Unique to the other multi barrels in the series as it used Brandy instead of rum, but still a worthwhile effort. Double/Triple/Quad were definitely far better. Would have liked to see additional actual barrels instead of barrel aged flavorings. 4.28

Smell is mango, peach, honey dew, vanilla, pineapple, and apricot. 4.25

Taste follows mango, peach, melon, pineapple, vanilla, and apricot very well balanced, nothing dominating. 4.5

Mouthfeel is bigger than most for 7%, soft gentle carbonation, sticky not dry, and extremely approachable. 4.75

Overall this is an excellent collaboration and a flat out tasty brew, Marsh Island pulls some great beers often and for me this is one of them. Someone needs to take this off the retired beers, because this one came out of retirement and I am glad it was. 4.5

Smell tangerine, coconut, pineapple, hints of garlic and onion, and apricot really well balanced and slightly different in a good way. 4

Taste follows tangerine, pineapple, coconut, upfront with again mild garlic, onion, and apricot in the rather smooth and balanced finish. 4

Mouthfeel is medium, fairly soft carbonation, a little dry and sticky, and at 7.1% ABV really crushable. 4

Overall I love a NEIPA that stands out from all the juice bombs and that I could pick out of a lineup and this one is exactly that and I am excited to have 3 more that I can squeeze in between all those others that are almost all the same. 4

What better beer to drink during these ‘Idyll Days’?

The answer to that question has just gotta be Ommegang Idyll Days Pilsner, right?

Thanks to a generous benefactor I have this beer to drink while I am ‘quarantined’ at home.

Below is how Ommegang details this beer on their sell sheet:

    “Idyll Days Pilsner

    Unfiltered Belgian Style Lager

    THE BEER

Inspired by the tradition and ambience of the pastoral world around us, Idyll Days is a beautifully rustic Belgian-style pilsner. This time-honored creation is brewed with authentic floor-malted barley from the Czech Republic, fermented with a Belgian lager yeast, then patiently cellared until mature. Presented in its essential, unfiltered form, Idyll Days is glorious in its simplicity.

    TASTING NOTES

The beer pours a hazy pale straw hue with a brilliant white head. Czech Saaz hops lend delicate, floral aromas, enhanced by sweet notes of fresh grain. Traditional floor-malted barley sets this beer apart, imparting distinctive earthy flavors of biscuit and subtle honey, framed by a round and quaffable malt body. With mild yeast flavor, Idyll Days Pilsner finishes clean and easy.

    FERMENTABLES: Pilsner malt, flaked corn

HOPS: Czech Saaz for bittering and late addition

    YEAST: Belgian Pilsner

    ABV: 5.0%

    IBU: 28

    SRM: 3”

    https://www.ommegang.com/wp-content/uploads/2020/02/Idyll_Days_Sell_Sheet_final.pdf

A couple of things ‘jumped out’ at me from the above description. Firstly the Ommegang brewers decided to add the adjunct of flaked corn to their grain bill. I use flaked corn to brew my Classic American Pilsner (albeit with North American 6-row pale malt as the malt part of the grist). Secondly Ommegang decided to use a Belgian lager (Pilsner) yeast strain. Maybe the yeast strain used by their owner (Brouwerij Duvel Moortgat NV) to brew lager (Pilsner) beers?

Well, I am intrigued by the above and look forward to drinking my Idyll Days beer.

Served in my Polish Pilsner glass:

    Appearance:

Hazy straw colored with a fluffy white head. This beer leaves a beautiful Belgian Lace as the beer is consumed.

    Aroma:

The first impression is the aroma of bready malt but with over time there is also some citrus (lemon-like) hop aroma.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with predominantly bready flavors but on mid-palate there is a sweet-ish aspect as well. There is some citrus flavor from the hops as well.

    Mouthfeel:

Light/Medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Overall:

I think this beer is pretty good.

I didn’t really perceive any qualities of the flaked corn (maybe it added to the dryness of the finish?) and nothing ‘special’ concerning the Belgian Pilsner yeast. FWIW this beer tasted like a German Pilsner to me; a good German Pilsner.

    Cheers!

Gun Hill / Lock City - Locked & Loaded. First review. This batch was recalled from exploding cans, but I salvaged one from my Tavour box. Other one blew up. Took my time to pour this one. Excellent NEDIPA. Lasting fluffy head retention/foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, orange juice, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, blueberry, gooseberry, citrus peel/rind, wood, peppercorn, pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light honey/toasted malts; and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on on the finish. Medium-high carbonation and medium-plus body; very creamy/bready/grainy malts, and some sticky/resinous/rindy hops in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness and carbonation. Dangerously smooth/soft, minimal warming 9.1%. Awesome Citra, Galaxy, Simcoe, and Mosaic profile. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a nice sized wheat/oat/malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. No complaints! Definitely not infected, but needed some time to degas itself. Worth the wait. 4.03

Hope everyone is doing well this week. It's been another week of laying low for us which has led to me digging a bit deeper into my cellar and working through some of the things I forgot I had. This week I found the bottle of Collective Arts' Origin of Darkness collab with Voodoo Brewing. This imperial stout was aged for 21 months in bourbon barrels and conditioned on cocoa nibs and cassia bark. I've had a few Collective Arts beers in the past and enjoyed them, but this was my first time trying one of their stouts. Voodoo is local to me and are wizards when it comes to barrel aging their stouts. I was hoping to catch a bit of that magic here, but it just didn't happen. This variation of Origin of Darkness, while still a strong beer, left me wanting more. Maybe my expectations were a bit high. I didn't hate it by any means, I think I just wanted more from it.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.75 | feel: 3.75 | overall: 4

Look - It poured a dark brown with a thin tan head that quickly faded.
Smell - The aroma was pure bourbon with maybe some notes of the cassia bark. The cocoa nibs were not apparent to me in the scent.
Taste - I feel like I got more bourbon on the nose than I did from the taste. It was present, but I just wanted more of it. I also wanted more cocoa flavor. The cassia bark was right where it should have been, but I wanted more from the other flavors.
Feel - This was pretty thin and undercarbonated for my taste. I don't mind the little carbonation that usually comes with an extensive barrel aging, but I expect deeper flavor than what was developed here. There was very little coating of the glass.
Overall - This was a decent barrel-aged stout offering, but nothing stood out to make it more than that. I just found myself wanting more in the end.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz canned shaped pint glass, canned on 3/25/20. Pours slightly hazy pinkish orange with a nearly 3 finger head that leaves a few wisps of lace and settles rather quick making a sparkling wine sound as it settles. 4

Smell watermelon, green apple, and green grapes. 3.75

Taste follows watermelon is most dominant, but not over the top green apples and green grapes balance in out, slightly tart but not too much pucker for me. 4

Mouthfeel is rather thin, plenty of prickly carbonation, a little dry, and at 5% loaded with flavor. 4

Overall this way out of my comfort zone. Sours not my jam and not a watermelon guy, but this actually pretty darn solid. 4

T- Much of the same with a serious tangy twang to it. Juicy and sweet. Mind blowingly zero pine or hop bitterness. 4

F- Medium/light bodied, the one downfall is this is a bit thin. But I suppose for the crushability factor that's a good thing. 3.75

Little early for a beer yet today, but with my kids and I getting covid stir crazy we've been getting outside in the backyard and neighborhood with every break in rain. Working from home while watching the little ones it tough.

Tested out a drone we got a year ago for the first time finally, and couldn't get it to trim out for the kids to get a turn.

That being lame we tested out our new water rocket yesterday with great success and altitudes.
Celebrated with a second try of my first stout from KCBC and it was really good.

[IMG]what are boy names that start with m

L: A midnight brew with a two finger tan head settling down to a ring and wisp and a load of visible sediment coating the bottom of my teku.

S: Beautiful roasted malts and quality cold brew coffee. Vanilla and sweet caramel approach the forefront.

T: Exactly what I hope for in a coffee double. Neither side bowing to the other. Harmony and balance. Very espresso bitter on the aftertaste.

F: This much coffee character nearly always results in a painfully thin beer, yet somehow this one held on to some weight and mouthfeel!

O: I am impressed with KCBC’s offer here. A tier met by few for the style.

Today’s new, stay at home, beer is KBS Espresso:

Poured at 52 degrees, a large rocky two-tone tan head sits atop an opaque, black body with ruby edges; long lasting cap, heavy ring and lacing; medium minus legs on swirl. The nose is strong coffee; bourbon and roast malt present as beverage warms. Strong coffee taste up front; caramel, bourbon and oak in the middle; finish is bitter coffee roast. Smooth silky feel; chaulky tongue coating; medium plus body; moderate carbonation; alcohol burn on tip of tongue; dry char/barrel/wood finish. Overall, the coffee/roast is bitter and it takes awhile for the bourbon and caramel flavors to catch up; long bitter roasted bean linger; if you like strong coffee/stouts then this beer is for you; I liked it and appreciate the oomph that the added coffee brings to the party, but I like regular KBS better.

Good morning, NBS friends and family! I'm starting off today with a mystery beer courtesy of @kemoarps via NBS BIF #11: This One Will Take You Back to Bitch School.

Between the label and the amber color in the bottle, I'm expecting to be quite fooled by this one. I'm going to go with a fairly neutral glass, guessing this is neither an IPA nor a stout.

Well, it's not an IPA or a stout ... but hot damn! This is going to kick my ass in a number of ways, apparently. It's also going to take a while to review, as I suspect it needs to warm up to meet its full potential.

Pretty much no head production. Murky brown in the glass. A touch sour on the nose from the bottle, but in the glass it's 100% barleywine. I suspect American, but would Kestrel do that to me? Hmm. (Appearance: 2.5)

I'm also guessing this may be very, very old, based on the aroma and the lack of head. Barrel aged? Hmm, that would explain the mild sour note, but otherwise the nose doesn't scream barrel aging. It definitely smells like malt soup - that wonderful stage of brewing where you stir the wort and the malt aromas fill the air. To me, a good barleywine smells exactly like that, and this checks that box.

There's also a strange, indefinable mustiness - I can't tell if that's due to age, or something else. Oak? Wine barrels? Just an old barleywine? I don't know what's happening here. (Aroma: 3.5)

OK, I'm steeling my nerves, and diving in.

Thick, malty, hoppy, boozy; definitely a barleywine, possibly an aged ABW (doesn't come across as EBW/BBW to me). There's a big, bark-and-citrus-and-pine hop tone on the finish, but tempered with age (or balance). There's also, again, some kind of vague oaky note in there, like this was aged in bourbon, rye, or even wine barrels, but perhaps some time ago, as it doesn't stand out strongly.

Oh, and lots of caramel. Lots of caramel, brown sugar, leather, and grapes. Only a touch of bitter chocolate; moderate notes of prunes.

This is complex and crazy, and clearly old (man, I hope I'm not wrong on that front!), but ... it's impressive, and enjoyable. I'm not sure if I can rate it appropriately without a fresh variant to compare, but I suppose I can toss a number on it based on the beer in my glass. (Taste: 4.0 Mouthfeel: 4.0 Overall: 4.0) (Numbers may change subject to warming, and if the reveal confirms my suspicions of age, I may extrapolate the lower ratings appropriately.)

OK, let's get to the reveal! I'm guessing an American Barleywine from the West Coast (PNW probably, but I'm not ruling out CA). It's not Bigfoot, based on the bottle profile. I'm suspecting it was barrel aged, but I'm not 100%, and I suspect it has some significant age on it - perhaps 5 years or more. 13% ABV. (Yeah, that's a hell of a guess.)

Jesus! Removing this mystery label has been quite the challenge, but it is leaving the original label intact.

Hair of the Dog (Portland, Oregon; PNW, check!) Doggie Claws (American Barleywine, check!). Bottle conditioned, but not barrel aged (minor whiff). 2019 (major whiff!). 11.5% ABV (calling that one a check!).

Wow! I was way off on the age, obviously; ABW typically don't have fantastic head production, but this was so nearly nonexistent that it's hard to believe the beer is this fresh! The complexity, for a non-aged beer, is really remarkable. (Looks like my ratings are perfectly valid, though!)

I'm pretty happy with the rest of the analysis. I blind guessed 13% ABV based primarily on it being a huge ABW, and I was off by 1.5%. Nailed the style. I wasn't married to the idea of it being barrel aged. The biggest whiff was definitely on the age.

Thanks, Kestrel, for getting my Sunday morning off "right" with one hell of an ass-kicker! I'll definitely look for something a little lighter for my next new beer of the day.

    Cheers, BAs!

Shaping up to be a nice day, so I expect some pool time this afternoon.
We are weathering this social distancing fairly well. My wife works from home anyway, so no real effect on her. I'm retired and the only thing I miss are my golfing buddies. We have gone for more walks with the dogs, played a lot of cards, done some puzzles, and watched a lot of movies. No one is sick, and we hope to stay that way.
My new beer is Hazy Little Thing IPA from Sierra Nevada.
Poured into a snifter the beer is a hazy gold color with a one inch white head and a bit of lace.
Citrus aroma, a hint of pine.
Taste of grapefruit, orange, and lime. A little late pine.
    Nicely bitter.
