I don’t Like trump and it feels like you will make any excuse to defend a total piece of shit who in my opinion is in no real rush to stop this Virus. I’m sure he is making millions off this market and has been for his whole presidency by manipulating the markets with his public comments. Would love to see his trading account and compare it to the Market ups/downs and his public comments. Do you really think this administration gives a shit about the poor non whites who are dying and will continue to die.

    Enjoy

I'm not sure the two are related in that way. There is a yearly vaccine for influenza but it mutates so quickly that multiple strains are infecting people in any given year.

The "herd immunity" that people are talking about here I think is the idea that as.more people are infected and recover from this novel virus it will become less deadly for more people and have a harder time taking hold in any population.

If you look at.the life cycle of viruses they do tend to become less.virulent over time as their hosts are either killed out (meaning the virus dies out or finds a new host) or they adapt a certain degree of immunity and the virus becomes just one more potential illness. The role vaccines play in this cycle is pretty poorly understood, although obviously pretty widely commented on. I'll see if I can dig up the title and author, but I read a fascinating study of the history and biology of vaccination written by an MD a few years ago. Her conclusion was that vaccines are probably best used much more sparingly than we do now, with individuals getting a more.targeted vaccination load based on their individual circumstances and risks. And that vaccines would be better used if applied over a longer period of our lives instead of front loaded so heavily. A lot.of her logic revolved around.the temporary immunity provided by vaccination undermining long term herd immunity of several diseases

It's a fascinating subject and as the article @bbtkd posted reminded me, the way we are working with genetics is advancing so fast that its not unthinkable that we may see the introduction of entirely new techniques of "vaccination" that may not involve anything that we currently lump into that category.

I think that depends on how much or if the virus RNA mutates and rate at which it does. Think flu vs polio.

I understand what the concept of herd immunity means. But herd immunity requires a certain percentage of the population to be immune.

    Doesn't it?

(Which, as an aside, is why the anti-vac charlatans are so dangerous.)

So, if people can become immune, then why wouldn't a vaccine be possible?

And, if people cannot become immune, then how will herd immunity even be a thing?

Maybe this is mother natures way of trying to save the plant. Over population of humans destroying earth. She had to do something about global warming so she stepped in with this virus. Look how pollution has gone down. She has had enough as I see it.

    A. I believe that's the concept behind the plasma trials NY was reportedly implementing.

    B. If people can't become immune, then herd immunity goes out the window, or so it would seem from my understanding.

That is universally true for every decision made by every president ever. Thick skin is the number one criteria for being a politician. See the famous quote on that subject that is often attributed to Abe Lincoln.

Knowing that any decision they made would be met with criticism from one side or the other didn't prevent his predecessors from dealing with national emergencies/disasters with grace, dignity, and poise. How many insults did GWB hurl at his political rivals or the press following 9/11?
Nothing will "descare" me less than someone telling people to stop social distancing so we can develop herd immunity more rapidly. Does he think that he knows some truth that every other epidemiologist doesn't? Of course herd immunity would be developed more rapidly if we just return to our normal routines. The problem is most people don't fancy having to walk past piles of dead bodies in the streets on their way to work or school. Or the medical system collapsing completely so people start dying of things that would normally be treatable.

Isn't it quirky how natural systems have a pulchritude of ways to achieve homeostasis? Fascinating.

That made me chuckle a bit because it made me think of the "Bring out your dead!" Monty Python skit. Brightened my day a little. Thanks!

Cheers to all you and stay safe out there.

Wait, so you're saying that this Administration has some sort of respect for human dignity.? This Administration worships money and nothing more, and the only reason why they tolerate white people is because of their socioeconomic status. It's all about Mammon.

I think there is common misunderstanding of herd immunity. Yes, in cavemen days its the survival of the fittest. Now, we put an iron ring around the most vulnerable. Then the virus among the others serves to let the virus die out.
