The National Review is a pretty conservative source. Funny thing, follow the link to the The Guardian story (a source I'd personally give a lot more credibility to) that they referenced and that piece is not very positive about what Sweden is doing right now. The name of the article is literally, "They are leading us to catastrophe': Sweden's coronavirus stoicism begins to jar."

One of the reasons it wouldn't work in the US is also that our gov't dragged so much ass in getting people tested. Stupid citizens or no, you can't quarantine people you don't know are sick (because you're not testing anyone).

Dark Lord Day is obviously a big cash cow for fff. At some point, they are going to sell the beer.

If they are unable to hold a fest, I am wondering how they will sell the beer. I don’t think they just start selling allotments at the kiosk. I wonder if the would sell tickets for a day of the week to pick up bottles This would thin out the crowds at the facility.

Of course, this is all speculation since the brewery will probably burn down.

They can't sell DL variants at the kiosk...holy shit can you imagine the chaos!

Maybe regular DL bottles, but when your average beer consumer in the Chicago area that doesn't normally go to DLD gets wind of it, they'd still probably flock down there just like the days of Zombie Dust lines at the kiosk.

I hope they still hold the fest, even if it's in the fall. I use to go for the variant bottle when I first started going to DLD but last couple of years I've gone for the great time that the fest provides. I'd be perfectly fine if they completely eliminated the bottled variants to-go and made all that beer available on draft throughout that day. Or, even they don't have the fest this year, I say let those beers sit in those barrels for 2 years.

As for selling variants at the kiosk, I think it was in 2015 when they sold left over variants from 2014 that didn't get claimed. I vaguely recall seeing the 2-year Portuguese Brandy BA DL available for purchase. They also sold regular DLs (that I know for sure because I bought a couple of DL 2014 bottles at the kiosk). But I agree with Sabtos, that was a different time and now it would be pure chaos if they went the route of selling variants from the kiosk.

I want the fest to go on as well. Wouldn't care if it was in winter in a foot of snow. The shit show that is people watching at this event is worth the admission price.

this is a terrible idea. It’s hard enough to fight off the zombie snowmen in the pouring rain - you think we’ll survive this year if they have their natural camouflage?

If they sell off variants and regular, it will be the same as getting a DLD ticket. You will pay like $200 for a package of 4 regulars and a variant, pick up in the time frame specified (probably a week each group for social distancing), and be given the variant at random.

That being said, DLD is too near and dear to FFF to give up on for a year and Dark Lord is strong enough to keep until fall so it really comes down to a matter of whether they can get the fest permitted later. I'm sure Munster would love the money assuming their aren't virus safety concerns still.

In Ireland, speculation is they will not be allowed to reopen pubs until 2021 at the earliest.

A wild card between now and a vaccine / proven treatment is determining the extent of exposure at this point (15% + in certain areas based on testing of sewage in early April), and more important the length of immunity, if any, for those already exposed to the virus (whether ill or not).

I'm hopeful some semblance of normality will occur before year end, but not sure if large gatherings will be allowed in time to salvage DLD 2021. Still hopeful for FOBAB 2021.

Right. I wouldn't hold out hope for a vaccine. If SARS still doesn't have one, this likely won't unless there's an overall general coronavirus breakthrough no one's been able to make all these years.

Anyway, if Germany cancelled Oktoberfest, we're all fucked. The last time they cancelled it was WWII.

I know they had left over Moscatel from 2013 and sold it prior to 2014 DLD, and you could be right about a brandy variant being left over as well from 2014 or 2015. But those weren't exactly high demand variants.

If they did sell the bottles for pickup, it would have to be pre-sold online and with pickup windows spread out over a month like TG is doing with their latest Assassin release. This gives people time to schedule a pickup that works for them if travel is required and also keeps people spread out.

They have sold dark lord and the aquavit variant through the Mikkeller webshop, it's the only logical conclusion.
