Hello NBS friends and Happy Easter. I had a plan that included 3 different NBS BIF beers across multiple “generations” for tonight.

And then I had to buy Mrs O an Easter card and I just happened to walk down the beer aisle at the Martin’s Supermarket I visited to secure said Easter card and I saw this beer from my local that is supporting pet rescue and that plan flew out the window faster than you can say, “We’ve had two rescue dogs and they were (and are) AWESOME and we’re maybe the biggest dog people EVER.”

So I’m joining our beer nerd friend @Premo88 in reviewing an APA, supporting a local brewery (which is critical in our new reality), and helping rescue pets. That’s a beer nerd trifecta I love to support.

PS: I actually added what I think is this beer, just by a different name, back in 2015:

    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/27926/189519/

The only difference is the beer I’m drinking tonight is 6% ABV vs the 5.5% of the beer from nearly 5 years ago. But I’m not adding this as a “new” beer, because I’m pretty positive it’s the same Cascade-hopped APA I had in September 2015, but it’s pretty tasty and it supports a cause that is dear to my heart - just look at the face on this beauty that needs some help .....

And here’s the parties putting together this effort .....

On to the review. The pour reveals a minimally hazy burnt orange beer with a light tan head that is very clingy as you enjoy this classic APA. The nose features tropical notes including candied oranges and grapefruit, and there’s a slight caramalt note as well.

There’s a nice bitterness on the taste, with the candied oranges and grapefruit providing the bitterness to match up with the balance provided by the caramalt flavor that is SOOOOOO on point.

I rated this 4.02 back in 2015, and this is in that area, maybe even a smidge higher. Just a really crushable APA that happens to help some doggos. Count me in.

PPS: here’s Ranger, our second rescue. He’s just shy of 8 years old, and came to us in August 2012. He was 9 lbs when we got him, and weighs in at 72 lbs today. He and his 5 siblings were abandoned when they were 2 weeks old and left to die.

Weiherer Rauchbock, a German Rauchbier brewed in collaboration between German Brewery Kundmüller and Brazilian brewery Cervejaria Bamberg (7% ABV).

Pours a slightly cloudy, golden amber coloration with a medium, fluffy head. Smells of smoked, caramel malt and floral, grassy hops.

Taste follows the nose, with a a good balance of smoked, caramel malt and floral, grassy hops. Finishes bitternsweet, with a light/medium bitterness and some smoked malt and floral/grassy hops lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

A decent Rauchbock that's a little too sweet and floral for my personal taste though, while the smoky notes also kinda fail to really leave a distinct impression here. I mean, it's all right, I just expected a little more of Kundmüller and this just ticks all my boxes when it comes to a flavor profile I personally dislike with its sweet and floral character.

I will say that there's a decent bitter, grassy hop profile to it as well, which provides some balance, but all in all this just doesn't really do it for me. No comparison to Schlenkerla for sure.

Wow, what a gorgeous beer! If that color doesn't say it all, well, it still says a lot! :sunglasses:

Well, 4 Hands is in St Louis, so I’d guess their beers would be available in St Louis and the surrounding area at the very least.

    Is this a trick question?

This beer pours a dark amber color with a minimal amount of haze and a tan head. Beautiful beer.

The nose is nutty aromas up front, with caramel notes as well. The taste has the nutty notes, but as this warms the caramel flavors come forward and the vanilla flavor emerges. The mouthfeel picks up on the vanilla and lends a creamy note to a beer that is 5.2% ABV, something I didn’t expect.

This is a hidden little gem, IMHO. I’m glad I have a second can of this to enjoy.

Dude, that beer is nothing crazy or special ... but when I buy a sixer, between my partner and I, it will not stay in the fridge long.

I think your rating is spot on (it's actually higher than mine). It's also not the only praline-style ale around these parts. But this one really nails it. It's lively and drinkable, but still full of flavor.

I've had higher abv sours before and was underwhelmed.
This one (at 11.0% abv) is different!

    16 oz. can.
    Canned 03/19/20.
Moderate pour yields a 1 inch light pink head over a dark pinkish purple body with some lacing. Nice nose of the berries and currants. Taste of a berry cocktail! The nose did not give away much of the booze, that’s for sure! Wow! Good feel with definite alcohol on the finish. Wild ale indeed! Overall, a pleasant surprise and would recommend.
Cheers on a fine job from Foam!!!

    MODist Supra Deluxe:

    (never mind that dirty Nonic!!!)

    Look:
Pours a very pale yellow, with incredible clarity, excellent carbonation and lacing, and a bone white head.

    Smell:
Neutral, but with a touch of pale malt and some light tang (rice?), and nary a note of hop.

    Taste:
Light sweetness followed by a very, very light bitterness which lingers very nicely. Hop character here is light and lightly floral at that — surprisingly restrained. Very thirst quencher, and as far from a hop bomb as any other beer I’ve had in recent days.

    Feel:
    EXCELLENT drinkability.

    Overall:
An excellent example of what it aimed for, and better than average at that. Worth a tick!

Toppling Goliath Pseudo Sue - they're fairly new to my area and you can tell by the outrageous price. This beer was pretty good but nothing special and that I would pay a premium for. I'll keep an eye out for singles of their other beers.

Perrin Arctic Chill. Seriously no one added it yet? You MI bros are slacking, why do I have to be the premiere Michigander reviewer, I don't know. Anyways: Awesome NEIPA. Hazy with nice rocky head retention/soapy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, papaya, mango, honeydew melon, guava, cherry, strawberry, gooseberry, white grape/wine, citrus peel/zest, wood, peppercorn, pine hops; with moderate wheat, cracker, white bread dough, light biscuit/toasted malts; and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness on the finish. Medium carbonation/body; balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts, sticky hops, and some resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing resin dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth/soft, not aggressive. Minimal warming 7% or lingering hop burn after the finish. Awesome MI Copper and Hallertau Blanc profile. Very juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a nice sized wheat/malt backbone. Mild residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. They did a really great job on this one! Would buy again. One of their better NEIPA. 4.1

I ask because it had Binny's on the label (Chicago liquor store), which may indicate a Binny's store-only beer. I've been going to the liquor store less and less, but still don't recall seeing this beer. I probably should've just messaged FBarber.

    Two thoughts:

    1. I missed Outer Range on my last Colorado visit. I ended up stopping at Angry James for some brews before finishing the drive to a friend's in Denver. Oh how I would've changed those plans had I known about Outer Range.

    2. That's a really well done photo. Good colors, texture and spacing - love it!

This is a difficult post to write. Shortly after my first post in this thread earlier today my wife and I received word that a dear friend of ours passed away last evening. She had been friends with him and had a working relationship with him for almost 20 years. He was one of the most warm and welcoming people that my wife introduced me to when we met 8 years ago. We quickly became friends. He was one of the most genuine, thoughtful, and selfless people I've ever known. He was always full of life and wanted to be introduced to new music and ideas. He was also a lover of beer, and he was the first person to ever give me a Heady Topper. We connected in so many ways. I'm still in shock honestly. He was taken suddenly by what is assumed to be a heart attack at the moment at 54 years old. From all accounts so far it was very sudden and quick. He leaves behind a wonderful wife and three children. My wife and I are just devastated by the news. We also just feel awful that the family has to endure this loss during an already scare and uncertain time. We were just texting the last few days. He was checking in on us every few days, and we with them. Our last texts were about how we couldn't wait to share a beer once everything settled down. I knew I had to have something in his honor tonight, and this bottle seemed appropriate. This is one is for you, brother.
Transmit In Color poured a dark black with a one finger head. The smell is where this beer really started to shine. Big aromas of chocolate, tequila, cinnamon, chocolate, and then bourbon stream out of the glass. I wasn't sure how tequila would work with the bourbon, but it's actually very delightful. All of the flavors were very well balanced in fact. The only place this beer lacked was in the feel department, and that's just me trying to find fault where there isn't much. I might have enjoyed a bit more thickness in this stout, but it wasn't such a flaw as to diminish my enjoyment. My second Bottle Logic barrel aged stout is another winner for sure. Thank you @2beerdogs for this. It's bringing me not only great enjoyment, but also gret comfort right now. Cheers.
