If this pandemic forces wide scale shutdowns with brewers? Are you thinking about it? I'm not a liquor drinker, so I'm thinking about reading up and educating myself on how to go about doing it successfully through trial and error. Has it ever crossed your mind? Even as a hobby, I think it might be either enjoyable, frustrating, or both..... Like playing golf.

I don’t really see that happening but I’ve homebrewed for years and will continue to do so.

I used to , but lost my stuff in a flood.Still had everything but it was in a mixed mucky mess all over the basement, as the wooden shelf floated & dumped everything . Didn't think some of it was ever going to get clean,(or find it all) plus I was exhausted from extra work + a gazillion trips on the stairs. Just chucked much of it. Then lost my job, so didn't replace anything.

I intended to retool this year, after I got my tax refund back, but now this. :stuck_out_tongue: Most of it doesn't cost that much , but..... the one thing I really want if I'm going to do it again, is some kind of temperature control. In reading more, I've come to the conclusion that some less-than-ideal elements of my brews were related to inconsistent temperature.

For me the question is, will you Homebrew more? The answer is yes. I have been found about a batch a week. The supplies are there, I have kegs to fill before it gets too hot. I don't enjoy brewing when it is hot and humid, out in the garage.

I hope people do so when commercial beers become available again they sell all their good stuff cheap. That’s I how get all my nice stuff. Sounds cool then they find out it’s too much work so they sell it.

I hope it doesn't come to this. Like most other things, my time is better spent doing what I do best.

Would like to, but me and effort are in a bit of a tiff right now.

I just brewed a batch today after taking about a year off, and have another batch in planning already. The main thing slowing me down is building up yeast from beers that I like. I have all the other ingredients I'll need for a while, and I don't know how long it would take to have yeast shipped to me, so it doesn't make sense to me to buy it. Building up yeast also gives me something to do for a least a few minutes a day.

Instead of the expensive way of trial and error, since you want to read up on the hobby, here's a freebie HowToBrew.com that is kind of considered 'required' reading by homebrewers.

Take the time to do it and make it the thing that you do second best, and then it can support what you do best (presuming that you meant drinking beer as your best).

To the OP question, I haven't brewed in 5 years because of other things and lack of time, but I have the time to do it now and just might get restarted.

Just to answer your question...I've been ordering all the ingredients for my batches (with the exception of base malt, which I have at my house in bulk) online. Since this whole pandemic started there's been a surge of people ordering ingredients online now because a lot of businesses are closed, so the process in which the orders are fulfilled and shipped is a little delayed, but it's nothing horrible. I've gotten all my orders in about a week and a half.

Ah, the kick in the arse you need PapaGoose!:grin:

Home brewing can be as enjoyable as you want it to be. If you're just starting out, an extract kit is a good way to learn the basics. Give it a try. It can be more fun than trying to whack a small ball into an even smaller hole way out there, under a blazing sun no less!

I’d be the worlds worst home brewer, I’m not detailed, I’m not fastidious, I’m lazy, I’m impatient. I’d brew a crap beer that would get infected I’m sure because the bottles or caps weren’t sterilized well enough. Nah , if I want or need cheap in volume there’s Hamms.

I see no need, beer is in abundance around me so zero worries about a shortage.

I have a couple of things left to do, but I'm about to start brewing again for the first time in almost 2 years. But it has zero to do with the virus, I just really miss the homebrewing.

Yes, have already had good conversation on the brewing board. Need to buy a book and new equipment.

used to brew many years ago and it’s a good time to start again. Figure if I get enough bottles I can do a batch a week for a few weeks and then another half way into what I have bottled. See what happens. Trying to make space too.

    Enjoy

You sound like a lot of brewers I know. Seriously.
To be a passable brewer you just have to be uptight enough.

A few basic sanitation rules but other than that drinking your own brew is like smelling your farts.
It is amazing how satisfying your very own mediocre beer can be. Or so I have heard :grimacing:

Lol. Sniffing the stinky fingers, why do guys do that? It’s a bit weird. Good homebrewers like really good are probably a bit ocd. If your not taught you have to read and follow directions. I hate following recipes I’m an ad libber of a cook, but I know what I want it to taste like so I make it taste like that. Know your limits is a helpful thing.

I say go for it. I just brewed a batch a week ago after a year off (moved to a new house and had a lot of work travel) and I've got ingredients coming for a Maibock to brew next week. Basic start up is probably around $100 for equipment - if you brew extract - and I usually spend between $25 to $50 bucks per 5 gallon batch in ingredients. Plus, I use the spent grain from steeping to make a few loaves of bread and grind the rest for flour.

There's also a ton of free resources like what @PapaGoose03 mentioned to help you start out.

Ha! I'm very much a use every part of the buffalo person. Even the trub goes out to the garden or the hop bines. I guess I could attempt a yeast wash but I do have some limits.
