Mother Earth Tierra Madre Lager 4.5%. Well all of a sudden now I like Lagers, but from craft breweries. Maybe because it's been really hot this week. This is a really good beer and has nice malt flavor compared to Bud. Its smooth, crisp and easy to drink but not watery like Bud Light for about the same price. Its canned on 3/26/20 and kept in the fridge. Another hidden gem found at Grocery Outlet. I would have to rate this very high for the style. I should really go back and buy a case or 2. Probably my favorite Lager I've ever drank.

Rebel Kettle's Robby Rose, a Sour beer aged on oak with Raspberries, 6.2% ABV, 3.7 Overall

Pours an effervescent purplely-pink with rapidly falling pink head. Traces of heads retention & lacing

S: Tart raspberry & dark cherry

T: Follows the nose, plenty of oaky dryness up front. Some sweet berry flavor fights through the tartness & dryness, not a ton of sweetness though. Finishes tart & dry

MF: Medium body, dialed back carbonation.

A good take on the style that will make purists happy

Quintuple Barrel Big Bad Baptist, an Imperial Stout aged in Brandy and Bourbon barrels with barrel-aged coffee, coconut, almonds and salt, as well as roasted cocoa nibs and caramel, by American brewery Epic (12.1% ABV).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a medium, frothy, mocha-colored head. Smells rather intoxicating of quite roasted, caramel malt, dark, bitter chocolate and coffee and lighter coconut, toffee and vanilla, as well as some oak and brandy/bourbon accents.

Taste is an excellent balance of quite roasted, slightly caramelly malt, a huge dark, bitter and roasted chocolate and coffee presence, with the chocolate feeling even more prominent, and ligher notes of toasted coconut, almonds, licorice and vanilla, as well as a strong barrel presence of both brandy and bourbon, with the brandy feeling a little prominent, some oak and a good dose of salted caramel coming through in the aftertaste. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some roasted malt, chocolate, coffee, coconut and salted caramel lingering in the aftertaste. Full mouthfeel with a rich body and medium carbonation.

This is just a fantastic stout with a huge depth of flavor and complexity, while still being superbly balanced, with quite a roasted and bitter character and only very little sweetness being provided by the salted caramel here. The huge dark and bitter chocolate and coffee notes play right into this balance with a very rich presence and the coffee also providing subtle spicy accents, while the toasted coconut and almonds actually remain firmly in the background, with the coconut coming through a little more though, while also feeling rather toasted and not as sweet as in some stouts.

The rich barrel profile really is the coup de grace here though, with the brandy coming through particularly with a sort of fruity, mildly sweet and boozy presence along with the more typical bourbon barrel notes of oak and vanilla. Mind you, I'm not a huge fan of sweet and boozy stouts at all and these brandy notes are rather soft and subtle here, working well with the overall balance. I often find these 650ml bottles of 12+% ABV stout overwhelming and difficult to finish, but I will be savoring every last drop of this.

Cross post from WBAYDN...Hammer Heart Brewing Co., Lino, MN - “Flaming Longship” (2018):

Poured at 58 degrees, deep amber/coppery ruby brown with good clarity under a thick, creamy beige head; cap retention to the bottom of the glass; heavy lacing; no legs. Smoke, sweet malt and medium fruity esters in nose. Liquid smoke, char, burnt fruit cake, caramel malt, fruity sweet plums and raisins; more fruity than malty. Medium body, moderate plus carbonation; no warmth from 8.5%. Overall, the fruity nose/taste dominates the malt base; the body is a bit thin; and there is more char than I want; solid, but I’m not feeling it...

Pineapple juice yellow body; thick, foamy white head, rocky and fluffy. Fine aroma of fresh mango, pineapple, and tangerine. The taste folds together flavors of mild citrus fruits with some lightly toasted grain flavors; biscuit; decent bitterness permeates the flavor. Medium-heavy body; a little dry; some alcohol warmth.

This is another fine effort from Outer Range. It is impressive when a NEIPA / hazy styled beer actually tastes of fresh fruit and not old, stale citrus rinds. This is a very fine offering and well-worth enjoying if you come across it.
    ----------
As I summed up in the second paragraph of my review, Outer Range has proved to be a mighty fine purveyor of hazy beers. I also enjoy their other offerings such as their saison (Hush) and their Bohemian pilsner (Kicker). Of the 10 beers I've had and reviewed, seven are above 4.0 for and overall (the three remaining ones have respectable high 3.0 overalls).

Anyway, the point is it is always satisfying to find a top-notch brewery near by that produces consistently good beers across a variety of styles of beer.

My favorite Vermont brewery so many years ago and now resurrected in Windsor, VT.

    16 oz. can.
    6.2% abv and 40 ibu.
    Canned 04/16/20.
Moderate to vigorous pour yields a one inch white head over a hazy, light golden body with some sticky lacing. Nose of citrus, slight pineapple, and a bit of a floral/herbal thing going on as well. Taste follows nose closely with the pineapple and citrus middle giving way to a near finish of slight candied pineapple and candied citrus and finally ending with a slight bitter citrus pith. Nice feel and overall, a very well balanced offering from Windsor, VT and would recommend.
    Cheers!!!

"Guessing" is about how it feels sometimes. It's like trying to hit a dartboard with about 10 bullseyes ... when I'm on I feel like I'm coming close to hitting some of the bullseyes but much farther from others, yet I can see them, so I keep throwing darts.

So glad to hear that you're doing so well Mr. Dave! I did not have a fraction of your health scare thankfully but did at least similarly have to conclude that there were no more calories left to cut out of the non-beer portions of my diet. Having to go to zero instead of 50% would have been exponentially more difficult so my hat's off to you and here's to your continued success and good health.

I've got an oyster stout this week from Devil's Purse Brewing down on good old Cape Cod ('down the Cape' as we'd say here in New England). It's called Intertidal Stout and clocks in at 5.5% ABV. According to the can it is brewed with whole oysters in the boil. Devil's Purse generally makes a lot of traditional beers along with a smattering of trendier offerings and does a good to great job on all of them (their ESB is especially good). They also have a cool, no nonsense drinking space at their brewery in Dennis that is a fun visit whenever we're down that way. I hope they're hanging in there during all this......

Look: Deep pitch black with a 1 inch tan, fluffy head that has quite a bit of staying power and leaves spotty lacing.

Smell: Lots of black coffee and baking chocolate and just a hint of briney undertone. I'm not convinced this latter bit isn't in my head.

Taste: Follows the nose but I feel much more confident I'm tasting that brine now. This has very little perceptible sweetness but also doesn't really have that much hoppy bitterness either. It's really a very pure presentation of the black coffee and unsweetened chocolate notes of the malt accentuated with that hint of the briney ocean water goodness.

Feel: Fairly crisp and light in the mouth with a very clean finish that just leaves a bit of that coffee bitterness lingering in the back of the mouth.

Overall: Really tasty and satisfying beer! While it may be an oyster stout, the flavor here is really all about the deep, somewhat bitter, coffee and chocolate flavors that are highlighted by the mild beachy brineyness that quietly hovers over everything.

Hope everyone is staying safe and sane out there.

I don’t know about the rest of you, but I plan my beer week around NBS, and I usually do it at least two weeks in advance, so I made this week’s choices before last week’s NBS.

Given the new conditions we’ve all had to adapt to, I decided to throw some NBS love at my local, Bare Hands, which is around 5 minutes from my house.

So imagine my excitement when I saw they’re delivering, and they have a bunch of stuff I’ve not had available for delivery, so I placed an order on Tuesday that was delivered perfectly on Wednesday. Magnificent - the plan is coming together.

The first beer I planned to review is Upful, an IPA that is Citra-hopped (my favorite varietal, along with Mosaic), with a biscuity malt backbone (my sweet spot, pun intended) - and it’s already in the BA database, on the day when @cavedave makes the opening post.

This is now officially the greatest NBS beer nerd day ever.

So I crack open Upful, pour it into a great beer glass courtesy of our beer nerd friend @beerloserLI in a past NBS BIF, then go to the beer profile page to complete the review (I do these live).

So imagine my surprise when I open Upful’s page and see that I’ve had it.

Not only have I had it, I added it to the BA database in July 2018.

For you kids out there, this is a shining example of why getting old REALLY sucks. I have zero recollection of buying this beer, drinking this beer, or reviewing this beer.

So lemons ———> lemonade. My beer nerd friends, this is Upful, the first beer that I’ve ever had delivered to my house that I’ve reviewed for NBS.

Golden orange color, very hazy, with a fluffy off-white head. Beautiful beer. The nose is all about the Citra hops - juicy pineapple, grapefruit rind, and tangerines.

The grapefruit rinds is up front on the taste, but the tangerines and pineapple keep things in line for a smooth, dry finish. This dank bomb is yet another example of Bare Hands’ prowess brewing flavorful, hoppy beers.

I got the same beer from the same source also in a ninja box in the Rookies BIF because @Roy_Hobbs is just an incredibly generous guy and really loved it. It was the first stout I had tried from Treehouse and your assessment was pretty spot on with how I felt. It was like a thick boozy mocha.
Really enjoyed your comparison here. Unfortunately I've never had Cantillon's gueuze, but really enjoy 3F's. I had a 2018 bottle of Armand & Gaston last night that I found much funkier than their gueuze, but I loved both. Great read.
I drank a bottle of this about 5 months ago and found it really enjoyable. I had read a lot about the orange fading very quickly, but I still detected it in mine. It was mellow but I enjoyed the way it worked with the rest of the flavors. If it had been any stronger I don't know that I'd have enjoyed it as much.

Good evening NBS, hope everyone is enjoying the end of the weekend once again. Thanks @cavedave for starting today’s thread. Been just playing video games, listening to music, and watching youtube channels through the lockdown. Just got extended to May 15th on Friday. Managed to get plenty of Engineering job recruiter hookups in my 3 months of zero benefit unemployment. Should be able to get a job quickly once we are freed from isolation. Thankfully my parents are helping me keep a roof over my head. Have not made a “beer haul” in a while, and as such have not been reviewing much new stuff at all; because I have plenty of other things to drink in the fridge from my over buying frenzy last year. That certainly will never happen again. I will get my credit cards paid off as soon as I can. Once I get a new job I will barely be buying beer in contrast to my last 3 years, unless it’s new and preferably in single cans. I need to reduce the size of my cellar, and I am the only one able to do it.

Founders 4 Giants. Amazing DIPA. Lasting rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, red grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, apricot, passion fruit, mango, honeydew, watermelon, red apple, berries, citrus peel/rind, wood, mint, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate cracker, toasted biscuit, light caramel/nutty malts; and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Light-moderate pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, woody, grassy, peppery bitterness. on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-full body; balanced creamy/bready/grainy malts, sticky hops, and some resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing resin dryness, no hop astringency. Very smooth, not overly aggressive, minimal warming 9.2%. They claim 7 hop varieties on the website, I already knew what to expect going in. Feels like mostly Centennial, Columbus, Amarillo, Simcoe, and El Dorado. Very vibrant, juicy, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a nice sized bready Munich malt backbone. Minimal residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Another top tier classic tasting DIPA. 4.33

My next New Beer this Sunday is Brandy Land, a "spiced imperial stout aged in apple brandy barrels."

According to the BA note,"Brandy Land is a cinnamon-infused, double-mashed imperial stout that slumbered 12 to 24 months in casks that held bourbon and apple brandy." That sounds, quite frankly, amazing.

It certainly smells amazing, as well, with a strong apple brandy note wafting over from several feet away. Up close, more classic imperial stout tones are revealed. Overall, it's a big bold stout, and honestly, higher quality than you might expect from Boulevard - but you low ball this one at your detriment, because it's really, really damn good.

Hey! Good to see you here, & that things are going well.
How'd you hang onto that so long? :astonished::grin:
My '19 succumbed on a hot July evening.:sunglasses:
Have you ever had any Beekeeper? I have a '19, & wondering if it's better sooner or later

Sounds good. A local brewery has a strawberry/rhubarb cream ale, that is brewed when the local strawberry harvest comes in , and is greatly-anticipated.

    Nice photo!
At first, I didn't realize that was a table, & thought the pond was frozen over again.

Yeah, that one is very good, and very puzzling . Had to reach deep into the sensory memory banks, and still didn't necessarily have a firm grip on it. Maybe it just has its own flavor?

Today's (first?) NBS is Fruit Punch Gose , a 4% abv fruited gose* from K2 Brothers. Loved their jalapeno creme ale , so willing to give this a try.
*Raspberry, strawberry, pineapple, sweet cherry, sour cherry, & fruit punch mix
L : Translucent pinky-orange, with pale pink head.

    S
: Mostly dried raspberry at first , leaning towards Kool-Aid smell, but thankfully stopping short. The usual gose combo of lactic sour+ocean breeze. As it warms, some maraschino cherry and strawberry jam comes in.

    T
: Close to the aroma, but more sour cherry, than sweet. A little bread crust malty flavor pops up briefly, mid-taste.Light bitterness, that seems just the right amount.

    F
: Typical gose : light, with very, very fine. moderately-sharp carbonation.

    O
: Good, and enjoyable. Not sure that all of the additions were necessary . Added expense, without a commensurate improvement in end result. Don't detract from it either, so there is that. Don't have access, but want to try it? Chop/mash a strawberry or two, drop it in your glass, and pour in some Ommegang Rosetta, or Victory Kirsch Gose. Should be quite close. :sunglasses:

Whoa! A longtime want of mine, dating back to when Founders was this fabled brewery that distributed nowhere near me. This one still doesn't come officially within a thousand miles of me. Wow, This thing is huge, almost like a Barleywine. Bottled in January, there's still quite a lot of alcohol "heat" to it. I'm glad I have no responsibilities outside home, today, after drinking this. Might even put off taking the trash out until tomorrow. Thanks, Craig!

Clear, light golden yellow body; plenty of fine carbonation; initially there is no head, but as time passes, a thin white head appears and lasts through the finish. Nice, gentle apple aroma; apple juice. Strong apple flavor; apple cider; juicy pineapple. Heavy body; prominent residual sugar mouthfeel; very sweet overall.

As a fruit beer, this one seems to have hit the brewer's intent. It won't appeal to someone looking for a beer experience, but should please those who love apple juice and cider flavors.
    ---------
Sure, I reviewed this fruit beer and it got a decent score from me, but it's a one and done (in fact, the remainder is going down the drain). I love apple juice and non-alcohol cider, but for a beer, this one just ain't my style or to my liking...
