Found out about a new documentary today, an old favorite from the days when German food and beer were pretty prominent in the Chicago area.

The Last Days of the Chicago Brauhaus.

I haven't checked out the actual film yet, saving it for quality viewing time. The Brauhaus was a great place to hit during German festivals and festival times -- I enjoyed many a Spaten Okto vom Faß here. Wish I could savor a last one.

And now Mirabell is Tapas? :frowning2:

I only visited the Ox and Eck a couple times before they closed, but they were great spots too.

I loved the Chicago Brauhaus - when you're German, actually born and raised, in Chicago, places like that are the closest you get to the fatherland around here. Today, the places I frequent most are Hofbräuhaus (Rosemont), Bavarian Lodge (Lisle), Laschett's Inn (Irving Park Rd.)

Have you checked out Himmel's yet? I've seen them featured on a few of the food and news shows, but I haven't tried them out.

Ah! Are you holding out on me? Himmel's looks like it would make a good addition to my German venues list. Unfortunately the website is a little light on information to be sure, and it looks like a German/Italian/European combo restaurant. I'll check them out further.

Not holding out, just unsure if it fits the parameters -- yours or mine.

We went to the Chicago Brauhaus a couple of times. The first time it was pretty good. The second time was pretty disappointing. The spatzle seemed to be just packaged egg noodles, not authentic or even homemade. We weren't surprised when it closed.

Have not been to Himmel's yet. I have to agree, the website is very light as far as information, and in today's age where you can't really go to restaurants, it seems not the most opportune time to check it out. I do have to say though: the picture they have on the website of the dishes look pretty nice. They must be right around the corner from Lincoln Square - interesting.

By the way, it appear the Gemütlichkeit movie about Chicago Brauhaus was taken off the website after only a day or two - what the heck??? And no indication where it is now (not even for fee?).

According to their Facebook page they took it down, and will announce when they make it available again... lame.

They have two different trailers on that website, not the movie.

love the Bavarian Lodge, such a great beer and food menu.

Use to enjoy The Radler in Logan Square until ownership changed and tacos and margeritas showed up on the menu.

Agreed about Bavarian Lodge food and beer menus. This weekend I am getting my weekly growler of Fürst Wallerstein Helles (hopefully they'll keep that on their tap list for a while) - and I keep dreaming of their Matterhorn Burger on a Pretzel Bun....

Love Laschet's and Resi's Bierstube (they had a killer Jagerschnitzel at R'sB). I was sad to hear about Brauhaus.
    Has Alpenhut survived?

Shit, I think meant Huettenbar. Dammit. It's still there, right?

I think Huettenbar is still there, but can't confirm for sure.
