Hello all you porter pounders, Scotch ale swiggers, gruit beer gulpers, Doppelbock downers, and cream ale chuggers. (All you witbier wankers don’t really fit the theme this week.) I haven’t been contributing to NBS lately. I felt like I was going to quit posting here for a perfect storm of reasons. But here I am. At least for today.

Someone on my block died last night. Things have been a bit of a rollercoaster but I still mowed my lawn today. To say the least, there have been some challenges, but I am grateful for what I have.

Earlier today, a man on BA posted, “As usual, I can count on @zid on his style rantings,” which really tickled me. Guilty. For this post, I won’t do any such thing in large amounts (just small ones). It’s flattering to just be noticed. Let’s drink some beer.

    Devil’s Purse - Handline Kölsch

“What’s a devil’s purse?“ you might ask. It’s where Satan keeps his Chapstick of course. It’s also a term for the egg case for some sharks. If you’re thinking this is the PERFECT name for a brewery then you’re not alone!

The brewer has the thoughtfulness to call this a “Kölsch-style ale”… but they put this in small font right below the giant word Kölsch… so, um, I’m a little embarrassed.

With a best by date of 5/7/2020, this sucker just squeaked in before the “it’s no longer fair to review this without a disclaimer” deadline.

Poured into a properly un-proper glass. I’m not grabbing a Stange for this. No offense.

The beer is a light amber color. This is a deep, dense yellow with a bit of haze. The head fizzed so much, I knew it was gonna run away like a thief. Smells of pilsner malt. Good, I’ve been craving pilsner malt.

The taste is as limp as soggy bread. I’m desperately looking for some crispness. It just sort of arrives to the party with a shrug of its shoulders and a ho-hum. Well, at least that’s my harsh first impression, but I warm up to it a bit since I can relate. It’s sweeter than I want it to be but it also has a pleasant, bitter kick. Tastes of sweet apples, oyster crackers, and lettuce (like certain movie credits - in order of appearance)… but in low volumes. Add a small touch of corn and lemon. This isn’t bad at all and it goes down really easy, but it also doesn’t manage to make me happy. I say that as if anything could actually make me happy. Just kidding, liquids can make me quite happy. This one didn’t, but I still wish I had more of it tonight.

This beer is ranked as #52 on the BA top Kölsch list. Früh is at #44. Draft Früh makes me so happy it’s ridiculous. It makes me sad that it’s difficult to find Früh on draft in NYC (pre-pandemic). Reissdorf has the most presence and Sion has muscled in because it’s cheaper.

Let’s transition from an American beer that thinks it’s German to a German beer that thinks it’s American. Identity crisis alert!

Bitburger (w/ Sierra Nevada) - Triple Hop’d Lager

This is the Bitburger follow-up to the 2019 Sierra Nevada Oktoberfest collaboration.

You all know about this one already. It uses Cascade, Centennial, Chinook, and ‘Siegelhopfen’ (Bitburger’s proprietary hop blend). In the dedicated thread to this beer, I said it was a missed opportunity in my eyes. Here’s what I said: “Instead of them going for the German/American hop melting pot approach, they could have done a German lager riff on SNPA with just the German Cascades.”

The color and clarity is pretty much similar to the previous beer except this one gets to a slightly darker amber. The nice head says to the previous beer “This is how it’s done.” It smells like an American IPA. I’m not saying it smells AS MUCH as one of those IPAs that would climb the charts, but it still smells like an IPA. The beer is pretty much dominated by the hop character. Truth in advertising? You can see the lager underneath it all, but the hops are just crushing it from above. It tastes of faint orange marmalade and it has a herbal quality. Finishes dry. Nice oily texture. This one came together rather nicely but it suffers from familiarity. Another case of me not being thrilled but still wishing I had more. Oh wait, I do have more of this one. Let’s give it another go at a higher temp after I have some bland cheddar cheese (which is the traditional food pairing for a German IPL - I’m not a total idjit).

This one was poured the way I like it - more aggressively. Smells the same. Tastes pretty much the same (I’m getting more bitterness on this one… which I like). The feel is even better by my standards due to more carbonation being released. There is no carbonation action on my tongue and I get to appreciate the slick feel in all its glory (the best part of this beer). The temp difference is noticeable. This particular can is my favorite of the day.

Those are my 2.5 new beers. Perhaps you have some new beers for today. If so, consider posting them in this thread. Don’t just tell us the name of the beer though, include your thoughts on the beer too. We are here to read your thoughts. That’s the point.

These beers are going out to @rgordon and @yemenmocha

Good morning NBS, thanks @zid for getting us started so early and with a well thought out review and opener...

Today feels a bit special, because I have never tried the brewery I’m about to sip on and the beer (evidently). Brewery, brewery... The Bruery, actually from the Golden State.

This is going to be my 400th beer rated on BA so for the occasion, I decided to have something special and post a review...

For the record, I could purchase it as I had mentioned in yesterday WBAYDN on a Dutch beer shop, one with an impressive selection of American brews and since some of you may know my love for stouts and particularly stouts from your guys side of the pond, here we go:

This would be Bakery, labeled as an American Imp Stout and more precisely a Banana Bread.

I poured it into a Guinness pint, maybe too aggressively hence the three inches of a brownish/mocha like foam and head. This is dangerously strong at 10,2% and before I even started drinking it I feel like this is still going to be a « smooth » one.

On the nose, this is a mix of chocolate and banana, brown sugar and some hints of vanilla.

On the palate, following the nose, this is a very well crafted brew made from chocolate, brown sugar, overwhelming banana notes and some caramel and vanilla. Super sweet and no warmth of the 10,2% strong abv.

This is a thick bodied stout with moderate carbonation. I like the smooth finish as I was expecting before.

Overall: This is a winner, and an excellent take on the Banana Bread, which would also be my first ever so I cannot compare it with others. As I wrote before; worth every pennies if you dig the style and banana, chocolate and vanilla notes all so well mixed up together.

    Cheers!

Have a good NBS. I haven't been reviewing much new beer as I do not have much left. Just been playing video games and sleeping all week. 80% of the time. I hope the life returns to normal soon and I can quickly find some employment. I understand the requirements for the precautions and all, but I am not getting anything even unemployment benefits. Fuck the state system. As always, there has been some offense taken about me in the way I do all my reviews; but I have been doing them the same way for a long time, and have no intention of deviating from how my mind steps through the process of giving a proper analysis. So F all those guys. :+1:

Energy City Milkshake Orangealicious. Fantastic NEDIPA. Opaquely hazy. Great fluffy head retention/foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big tangerine, orange juice/pulp, red grapefruit, lemon, peach, pear, pineapple, passion fruit, mango, honeydew melon, gooseberry, citrus peel/zest, peppercorn, and pine hops; with moderate vanilla, cream, wheat, white bread dough sweetness; and herbal/floral/grassy hop earthiness. Mild pine, citrus peel/zest, herbal, floral, grassy bitterness; and orange tang/tartness on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; very creamy/silky/bready malts, light sticky hops, resins, acids, tang in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter/tangy dryness; no cloying/astringent flavors. Dangerously smooth/soft. Zero warming 8.5%. Fantastic juicy/vibrant Citra hops/oranges with light dank/earthy notes; with a nice lactose and wheat/oat/malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering resin dryness. Completely on point, exceeded expectations. 4.25

Good day New BSers! Another damp morning here in NW PA, after last night's cold rain. I actually found a "New Beer" in my reefer for today's NBS - unfortunately it's an IPA.

$ 9.75 (Including tax & bottle deposit)/22 oz bottle ($ 0.443/oz). Purchased 8/1/19 at Oneonta Beer Depot, Oneonta, NY. Reviewed 5/3/20.

Undated bottle. In reefer at store. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 50 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 54 degrees.
    Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Pale gold (SRM 4), very slight haze.
Body – Medium amber (SRM 11.6 as marked on bottle), moderate effervescence, chill haze. When held to direct light, deep gold (SRM 6) and hazy. Shallow layer of sediment in bottle.
Head – Large (Maximum six cm, aggressive center pour), off white, medium density with rocks, average retention, diminishing to a three to four mm irregular crown and thin rocky complete cap.
Lacing – Poor. Few small islands of tiny bubbles.
Aroma – 3.5 – Weak grapefruit, no malt, no yeastiness. Considering the potential age, not bad.
Flavor – 3.5 - Begins with a syrupy sweetness of orange-flavored candy, no malt, no yeast. As it warms, the bitterness increases. No alcohol (7.2 % ABV as marked on the label) taste or aroma. No diacetyl, no dimethylsulfide. Ends with light citrusy bitterness with a long hang time.
Palate – 3 – Medium, almost syrupy, carbonation initially lively but quickly softens.
Final impression and summation: 3.25 (Lost 0.25 point for undated personal container). I must assume partial responsibility for the low score – I’d lost this in my beer reefer for eight months. Apparently, it didn’t hold up well. Otherwise, I think this brew would have been nicely bittered and even more citrusy. The cloying initial sweetness is a detriment to any style IPA.

    Rating 3.4, rDev -16.3%.

It’s a special time of the year as the sun rises earlier and earlier and each sunrise is unique , special and, on some days spectacular. I have one friend who has successfully endured Covid19. I have another friend in the hospital long term for non-Covid reasons. It makes me appreciate each sunrise more and more.

Those Rogue beers never die they persist. In early 2000 I was in Australia working with a Dutch expatriate winemaker figuring out how to salvage lots of wine from a failed winery. We had just had kangaroo steak and we were driving along a dirt road in The Hunter Valley when I asked Kees what sort of odd creatures he's seen out in these woods. He said, "you'll see the occasional Wombat.....whoa, there's a wombat by the fence." Damned, what a sight. Like a bear/raccoon/wolverine looking mammal. I count myself lucky indeed.

    How “Lo” can you go!?!

Firstly, permit me to have a slight diversion:

I was a kid when the whole Light (Lite) beer thing came out. I was a soda drinker as a kid and while I personally did not partake I was aware of Diet Soda. I always wondered: why didn’t the breweries market these new beers as Diet Beer?

Well, enough of that which brings us to today’s new beer: Victory Easy Ringer Lo-Cal IPA.

So, it would seem we are in an era of new marketing-speak with the terminology of “Lo-Cal” vs. Diet here?

Some other examples of beers with this “Lo-Cal” marketing spiel:

    · Dogfish Head Slightly Mighty IPA: Lo-Cal IPA

    · Braxton Labs Lo-Cal IPA

    · Bell’s Light Hearted Ale LO-CAL IPA

Below is how Victory details this beer on their website:

    “About This Beer

Drinking crisp and light with little bitterness and tons of hop character, notes of passionfruit and citrus wow the crowd.

The anytime crusher. Crisp and light at 4.3% ABV, the low bitterness and fruity notes make tossing a few back look easy.

    96 Calories | 3G Carbs

    abv: 4.3%

    ibu: 25

    malt: 2-Row Pale, Carapils

    hops: Strata, Citra, Cascade”

Well enough jibber-jabber, let’s see that this “Lo-Cal” stuff is all about.

Served in my Spiegelau IPA glass:

    Appearance:

Light golden colored with a slight haze and a BIG white head.

    Aroma:

A vibrant combination of tropical fruits, other fruit aromas and some citrus.

    Taste:

What!?! :astonished: With what I experienced on the nose I was expecting a tasty beer but the flavor of this beer is a complete letdown compared to the aroma. Where did the flavor go? Is this a bad magic trick or something? There is low bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Light bodied, watery, with a thin/dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is like a ‘tease’. I smell enticing aromas and then take a sip and wonder: where the heck did the flavors disappear*?

I will not be buying this beer again. It is indeed a “Lo” beer. :slight_frown:

    @rotsaruch @KOP_Beer_OUtlet @RobH

    * If anybody knows where this beer’s flavor is please let me know, I am still looking for it.

Thank you Zid for your excellent kickoff! I love Kolsch beers, perhaps even Kolsch "style" beers. I hope I run into this pour down the line. I also had the same reaction as you to the SN / Bitberger collaboration, was OK, was looking for something more flavorful and German oriented. I liked their Oktoberfest much better.

Lo-cal and session beers is where the market is headed, or at least that is what I have read lately. Several lo-cal offerings by the major players have made me left wanting for something more flavorful. I purchased my offering during the pandemic as a single last week, and was disappointed to find the package date was November 26, 2019. I would have aborted my review if I didn't like the pour, and perhaps I will like a fresher pour even better, but this session offering has a flavorful aroma and taste. Then again, this is Spiteful Brewing we are talking about, a top brewer for me in the city, and for that matter, the world.

Spiteful Brewing's Instigator Session IPA: 4.0% ABV, canned 11/26/19.

Appearance: Clean clear straw color pour, light white head dissipates quickly, faint fine bubble lacing left in its wake, mild carbonation. 4.0

    Aroma:
Nice citrus hops aroma, backed by cracker bread and pepper. Very pleasant. 4.25

    Taste:
Nice firm bitter taste, citrus and tangerine lead, light bread back. Flavorful, bold for a session pour. 4.0

    Mouthfeel:
Fizzy carbonation lingers throughout the pour. slightly dry and bitter, clean easy finish. 4.25

    Overall:
This is an excellent session offering will definitely grab these in the future if Spiteful reissues! 4.25

Looking forward to reading great ideas for future pours throughout the day, my favorite BA day of the week!

I am a couple beers deep already this morning but this is my first new one. This is Lakto-Cooler (Red) by Voodoo Brewing. It is a "Sour Berliner Style with Red".

Depending on what you are looking for in a beer this could be a 1 star or a 5 star. If you are looking for a traditional beer you will probably hate this. If you are looking for sweet and fizzy Berliner that tastes like generic Red Kool-Aid you will probably love this one.

Yes good to call me out. Sorry for the tease.

This guy is mostly orange zest and pine, but there are some herbal and mineral qualities as well. It is pretty full bodied like a thick juice, but not so much that it is overbearing. I think I'm only up to seven King County offers, most are pretty damn good. This one is middle of the pack for me.
