I can't, by definition, be a flaw. It is intentional to meet a specific market demand.

That's like saying a motorcycle is flawed because it only has 2 wheels.

I'll play along. Let's say a motorcycle company intentionally made one of the wheels smaller than the other on their bikes, because research had shown that this might reduce accidents on the road. As it turned out, it had just the opposite effect, and accidents doubled. Would this qualify as a design flaw? The change in design seems to meet the definition you provided above, so I'm assuming you would say it's not?

Would perhaps the word "bland" be the better word here? Rather than "flawed"?

I hear ya. That's why I decided to buy a "craft" motorcycle with 4 wheels.

    I call it a "car".

    Gorgeous!

    Is it flawed?

Of course. Just semantics here... I think you understand the point I'm making.

One of the more impressive attributes I keep on hearing from proponents of BMC stuff, is how impressive it is to make such a lightly flavored beer with no discernable flaws. They point out (probably correctly), that it's much easier to cover up off flavors in a massively flavored DIPA or BA RIS, than it is in an AAL.

Color me unimpressed. Frankly, in a beer as bland as Budweiser light (for example), a few off flavors would be an improvement. For my money, I'll take a hugely flawed DIPA every time (and believe me, I've had some humdingers over the years) over a beautifully pristine, completely "unflawed" glass of AAL swill.

Well, it does look like Bud or Mich, but gorgeous? I like a little color to my beer. Just had an HB Dunkel, now that was gorgeous.

    Cheers!

P.S. Does the use of the word "color" above constitute a pun!?!

Haha, it’s tasting great. I knew at 37 IBU’s that the beer would be bitter for what we now think of this style of beer being. I think new money beer drinkers will say it’s too bitter for how light it is, but I find that the bitterness enhances the drinkability. Here is the description I put on our Facebook page (the descriptors are true even if the sales pitch looks a bit over the top ):

”One of the 3 lagers we are canning tomorrow is Dreher's Original Bohemian Lager. This beer is our attempt at recreating Anton Dreher's Bohemian Pilsner from his historic Michelob brewery. This old school Pils features Moravian barley, the yeast that was taken from Augustiner brewery to Michelob in the 1870's, and nothing but the choicest Czech Saaz hops. The result is a well hopped, moderately bitter Pils with a beautifully delicate ester flavor, a touch of sulfur, and exceptional drinkability.”

Now drinking a glass of pFreim helles lager. All the characteristics one finds in an AAL except one. It is not bland. In fact it's absolutely delicious and flavorful... And completely hits the spot after an afternoon run (in 80 degree heat).

I am too a fan of the lagers (and Kolsch) of pFreim.

I will be discussing a new 'austere' Pilsner from Tired Hands in the next NBS thread. I will tag you.

    Cheers!

I like the higher ibus, I guess it might be called a bit snappy vs hoppy. Crisp, clean, I want that, lol.

I think it has a bit more color and a much nicer head than a Budweiser. But that’s just me. I also dig and appreciate the clarity.

Maybe “gorgeous” is a bit over the top, perhaps “delicious” is the word I should use?

Sure sounds delicious to me. And damn, 37 IBUs.

I went for a “nice” run this morning while it was snowing...in May. New England weather...

Ha, ok I’m not alone then.

Bud doesn’t have or hold a head like that, Buds a light fraction of a head that’s gone in a minute or two. There’s no froth to blow off, lol. AB products imo are overly carbonated, but it doesn’t show up on the pour, you think they accept that carbonation is perceived as flavor and fresh? Carbonation is smacking the palate it could fool one imo.

I have the same reaction when I drink their products. Considering how little flavor I get, I'm always surprised by how bloated I feel. Their beers strike me as very gassy, even a beer like bud lite, which has virtually no head or flavor. So the same thought crossed my mind... maybe this is what's supposed to pass for flavor in this stuff.
