    Good morning NBS
I'm no wordsmith, so I won't even try...

Here's the new beer in my glass this morning after a twelve hour overnight shift. I've done my best to describe it in my own caveman way, and you can do it too. Just a few words about the look, smell, taste and feel are all it takes.
    The review:
12oz "CANNED 04/08/20@15:54" poured into a Spiegelau IPA glass at fridge temp 8.5% ABV 80 IBU. The beer pours hazy, nearly opaque, yellow amber with off white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and small island. Minimal lacing. The aroma is strong with peach, candied orange, tangerine and maybe a hint of caramel and pine. The taste is semisweet fruit cocktail up front turning to moderate plus bitterness mid-palate with some over ripe citrus and pine notes in the finish. The mouthfeel is medium bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, good. This is a weird one for me with a hazy look, strong bitterness and no perceptible malt influence. Maybe it's intended to be just as confused as "Florida Man."

Cheers all and enjoy your Sunday and the new beer in your glass!

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass not sure when it was canned, but I trust @TheIPAHunter and am sure 4 weeks at most. Pours a slightly cloudy orange with a finger sticky white head that leaves plenty of thin webs of lace as it slowly settles. 4.5

Smell passion fruit, tangerine, papaya, herbal earthy undertones, and apricot. 4.5

Taste follows passion fruit, papaya, tangerine, again only can describe it as slightly herbal and clean and crisp, with a little apricot that sticks to the palate after each sip. 4.5

Mouthfeel is about medium, a tad sticky not dry, a little more carbonation than NEDIPAs and it works great, and at 8.2% really drinkable. 4.5

Overall this is an excellent DIPA, reminds me a little of Second Fiddle or Sip Of Sunshine, not a true NEDIPA but still juicy and crazy tasty. 4.5 Nice job starting this. Cheers

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz Teku glass canned on 5/7/20. Pours a hazy orange with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves a bunch of sticky rings of lace with excellent retention. 4.5

Smell is ripe melon, mango, peach, papaya, and apricot. 4

Taste follows cantaloupe, mango, peach, papaya, and apricot low in bitterness and really tasty. 4

Mouthfeel is about medium, soft gentle carbonation, a tad sticky but not dry, and at 6.5% it drinks a little bigger but still easy drinking. 4.25

Overall this is a really nice beer, not a wow beer but I will have no issues crushing this 4 pack and will purchase again next time I see it. 4

Good day BAs! Off to a pleasurable start prior to "Noir Alley" with today's New Breakfast Beer in one of my favorite styles, the barleywine - English or Murican, your choice.

$ 24.09 (Including shipping)/16 oz can ($ 1.51/oz). Received 5/5/20 from Craft Shack, San Diego, CA. Reviewed 5/17/20.
Stamped on bottom of can “PKG 10/29/19”. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 55 degrees (as suggested on the label) in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter. Final temperature 62 degrees.
    Appearance – 3.5.
First pour – Deep amber (SRM 15), murky.
Body – Brown (SRM 20), murky. Effervescent. When held to direct light, a ruby shade appears where the light penetrates, but only after the temperature reaches 59 degrees.
Head – Average (Maximum 3.5 cm, aggressive center pour), khaki, fizzy/high density with many medium rocks, short retention, diminishing to a 1.5 mm regular crown constantly renewed by the aggressive effervescence and no cap.
Lacing – None, much as expected.
Aroma – 4.25 – Predominately sweet roasted malt with a hint of brown sugar and some bourbon on the back end, no hops, no yeastiness.
Flavor – 4.25 – Begins with a roasted malty sweetness short of cloying mixed with distinct caramel followed by vanilla, no hops, no yeast. No alcohol (13.7 % ABV, as marked on the label) taste or aroma, but an instant gentle gastric warming occurs, which initially was harsh but on subsequent swallows mellowed. There is a hint of diacetyl but no dimethylsulfide. It ends with less-than-overpowering bourbon.
Palate – 3.75 – Medium, silky, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: 4.5. A bit thin but the excellent aroma and taste make this mellow example of the English barley wine superior to most others. I could sip this until “QWERTY” appeared on my forehead. Price point is a bit high but for an occasional splurge, well worth it. The label is simple but gives little information.

    Rating 4.21, rDev +0.2%.

This is VERY good. I don't know that I'd buy a case ($24.09 x 24 = $578.16) but I'd seriously consider it. After all, if I limited myself to one a day, it'd last almost a month!

Good morning NBSers and anyone that just enjoys reading the reviews here. I hope everyone had an enjoyable week, and thanks to @jkblr for getting it started this week. My county shifted from red to yellow this week which allows for some business to open back up, but largely leaves the breweries and restaurants here unchanged from their previous restrictions. You can start to feel people getting anxious to be out and about. It makes me feel fortunate to have a small outdoor oasis of a backyard to escape to while living in the middle of the city. I'm enjoying watching the sun begin to burn through the morning cloud cover as I write this review, but that won't last long according to the weatherman. Time feels like it moves just a bit slower out here which is something I've learned to appreciate as the years slide on by. My first review this week is from a local brewery that I've only started to patronize on a regular basis because their location wasn't an easy drive compared to some of my other favorite locals. Luckily for me they just announced where their new taproom in the city will be located and it's only about 5 minutes from me. Cheers to you, Insurrection Aleworks, and best of luck in your expansion!

Suppression is a DIPA that I actually bought by accident. I thought I ordered a 4-pack of Insurrection's Gamehendge DIPA on Friday, but I must have clicked the wrong entry and ordered Suppression instead. Not to worry, I ended up buying both 4-packs, so I'm sitting pretty now. I've been drinking a number of single hop IPA's lately, but none of them have focused on Mosaic until now. One of the reasons that I was more interested in Gamehendge was that it had a very detailed description of its hop and malt profile while I couldn't find much information on Suppression aside from that it had been made a few times before. I only found out after finishing it that it was a single hop beer. That allowed me to drink this beer without knowing that it was an all Mosaic DIPA and I rather enjoyed that experience. Suppression is a great representation of the berry and citrus flavors that can come from Mosaic while still having a great dank hop flavor and avoiding the sometimes "cat piss" notes. This happy accident has left me very pleased and I'm looking forward to the rest of the 4-pack. I didn't indulge in any whiskey yesterday, but seeing everyone's pictures got me craving a little. I should be back later today with a review of something that'll inject a little bourbon into my weekend. Until then, :beers:

Look - Pours an enticing yellow haze with a one inch white light foam head the dissipated to the edges of the glass.
Smell - Notes of citrus and stonefruit and dank hops dominate the aroma.
Taste - This is a lot richer than I was expecting from the look or smell. There was a thick and sweet berry taste up front with underlying citrus flavors. The back end was a sticky resiny dank flavor that kept me coming back.
Feel - Soft and drinkable. It was much lighter on the palate than the richness of flavor would suggest.
Overall - Suppression is a great profile of mosaic hops and an easy drinking DIPA. The 8% abv is barely detectable. I'm excited to savor this one a few more times before it's gone.

Just a quick note here about the way this beer is entered into the BA database. There are 3 listings for Suppression: Supression, Suppression #1, and Suppression #2. I'm almost positive that these separate listings are just for batch numbers of the same beer. Is that a thing that ever gets consolidated here? I thought that BA didn't make a differentiation for batch numbers or annual releases, but I understand that's obviously hard to monitor with how many new beers are released constantly. I just wasn't entirely sure which to use to write my review, but ended up going with the original entry.

Sometimes ‘old school’ is the best school?

I recognize by strolling by my local beer retailers’ shelves and seeing the plethora of Juicy/Hazy hoppy beers that haze is still the craze. And while I too enjoy these sorts of beers from time to time, I have more and more lately been craving ‘regular’ IPAs.

On a recent visit I saw a beer on the shelf with the six-pack holder proclaiming: “Balanced IPA with Big Notes of Citrus & Pine Aggressively Hopped”. Yeah man! That’s what I am talking about.

Today’s beer is Evolution Lot No. 3 IPA. I suspect that the Haze Bros would comment that the brewery’s name should be De-evolution?

    From the Evolution website:

    “Lot Nº 3 IPA

    ABV 6.8% • IBU 65

This American-style IPA is aggressively hopped at a rate of over 2 lb. per barrel. Big notes of citrus and pine complement a reserved but firm malt backbone.”

I looked on BA for when this beer was first reviewed and this happened in September 2009 so this brand is over 10 years old. Good for Evolution for keeping on with this brand.

Enough of this chit-chat, time to get back to school.

Served in my Spiegelau IPA glass:

    Appearance:

Amber colored with a BIG rocky white head.

    Aroma:

A combination of citrus and piney hop aromas accompanied with a caramel type malt aroma.

    Taste:

The flavor follows the nose with citrus and piney hop flavors with a notable caramel malt flavor. Very pleasant balance of flavors. There is a moderate level of bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

Medium bodied with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

This beer is very, very good. I enjoyed the combination of flavors in this beer.

Not from the specific hop aroma/flavor perspective but from a balance of hops and malt flavors this beer is reminiscent to me of Sierra Nevada Celebration Ale. I am also a fan of Celebration.

Smell- Citrus (orange, grapefruit and lemon), passion fruit, light stone fruit and berry, biscuity malt, resinous pine and floral/grassy hop notes. 4.25

Taste- Similar to the aroma. Citrus, light tropical fruit, apricot and berry, resinous pine, bready malts with a light lingering hoppy bitter finish. Pretty well balanced. 4

Feel- Medium/light bodied, dry and really crisp, super refreshing. Medium carbonation on the tongue. 4.25

O- My first Russian River beer and it lives up to the hype. A really nice IPA! 4.25

Being compared to Celebration is a pretty solid recommendation, I’m not one to get excited for most seasonal releases, but SN Celebration is on my list.

Good morning, NBS friends and family! Today I have a small lineup of new-to-me beers, but I'm going to start with my most highly anticipated: Heavy Boots of Lead, by Singlecut, and sent by @JayORear .

I could describe the appearance, but I couldn't do any better than our very own @cavedave , whose review appeared right below mine, and states thusly: "Black as ******'s heart."

As for the nose: wow! Tons and tons of chocolate and vanilla. Surprisingly more bitter on the palate (but still sweet), whether from the roast, a healthy dose of balancing hops, or the cacao itself (which I suspect), I'm not certain. It smells like dessert in a glass, but it tastes only mostly like dessert in a glass - more like chocolate covered nuts, really.

Really quite delicious, and at a sky-high 11.2% ABV, the effects can definitely sneak up on you.

Two new to me beers after midnight. Lately I have been making it a point to try more locally available "regular" shelf/seasonal beers that I have overlooked/never got around to trying:

Conshohocken Brewing Company Island in the Sun - it's a DIPA brewed with copious amounts of Mosaic, Simcoe and Bravo hops and Pineapple. It poured on the darker side and had a deep orange and the head did not stick around for long. It was an okay beer but not something I would drink again.

Evil Genius #Adulting - Guava IPA with Citra, Cascade and Warrior hops. Had an interesting smell and the Guava really came through, taste was a little odd and confused the palate a bit and bounced back and forth between sweet and bitter. Enjoyable but a one and done for me.

Have a good NBS. Thanks to @jkblr for today's minimalist thread startup. Same situation as last week. I am playing video games all week to pass the time, aside from sleeping. Still have the lockdown until at least the 28th as it was recently extended, again. Still no call backs about jobs. Whatever, I'm still here.

Grand Armory Barrel Aged Nutter Your Business. Fantastic stuff. Lasting rocky head retention/thick foamy lacing for the ABV. Aromas and flavors of big milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, coffee, peanut butter, roasted nuts, caramel, brown sugar, toasted biscuit, and dark/brown bread/crust; with lighter notes of vanilla, bourbon, oak, licorice, dark fruit, smoke, charcoal, herbal, grass, peppercorn, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate herbal, grass, pepper, roast, charred bitterness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation and fairly full body; very creamy/silky/velvety/bready malts; some sticky hops and chalky roast in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness; no cloying/acrid/astringent flavors. Very smooth/soft, mild increasing warmth of 10%, minimal booze. Fantastic balance of rich malts and authentic peanut butter flavors; with solid earthy hops and restrained fruity yeasty. Light residual sweetness with lingering hop/char bitter dryness. Definitely lacking in the barrel department, but still a nice step up from the base beer as an imperial version. 4.23

A recent Finback pickup brought me Ultimate Beats a DIPA. This was brewed with Wakefield. I was guessing that the Sabra hop was involved but the can report is “brewed with coconut and DDH with Mosaic.”
If not under the momentary stress of reading brief brew menus while wearing a mask.. I may not have chosen this one, but it is quite flavorful.

This bright yellow can pour holds a deep haze and 1.5 cm of white foam fluff. The aroma is coconut first and then floral notes.
The flavor is tropical, coconut and pineapple principally. The mouthfeel is smooth.
These are not my favored flavors for beer, but this very well executed. I believe that the goal was exactly this.

Surly’s Barrel Aged Darkness, looks like the 2017 version but bottled 1/10/18. From the information provided, aged more than 3 months in Woodford Reserve Rye Whiskey barrels. Let’s go!

Pours a deep brown with ruby see through at 56 degrees; fast fizzy tan head; large fizzy island of micro dots remain along with a solid ring and small spots of soapy lacing; medium legs on swirl. Nose is chocolate and whiskey; boozy retro nasal; spicy wood as liquid warms. Sweet dark fruit - plums, ripe cherries for first impression; chocolate, whiskey, oak and soy sauce follow; sweet caramel, toffee round out the whole; no roast, no bitterness. Medium body, slick feel, moderate carbonation; minimal warmth from 12%; slight alcohol burn on tongue; dry barrel/rye finish. Overall a solid BA RIS; nice boozy chocolate linger; more fruity sweetness than I want; caramel-like flavors play well off of the spicy oaky rye barrel notes.

    4.5 | 4.25 | 4.5 | 4.25 | 4.5
    Score: 4.42 rDev: + 0.2%

I’ve had regular Darkness several times over the years and most of the time I’ve found it soy saucy; the barrel aging on today’s beer really adds significantly to the layers of flavors in a positive way, and while detectable, the soy sauce is just background noise. Cheers and enjoy your Sunday BAs!

Found this one yesterday. Modelo Chelada Mango Y Chile. Very nice fruit beer as expected. Moderately hazy/cloudy. Poor head retention/no lacing as expected. Aromas and flavors of big juicy/tart/tangy mangoes and fruit skin; with lighter notes of chile peppers/seeds, cracker, white bread, and herbal/grassy hops. Light-moderate mango tang/tartness, and light pepper spiciness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation, light-medium body, and fairly crisp finishing. Balanced creamy/grainy malts, light slick/sticky/acidity in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy dryness; no pucker. Flavorful/refreshing. Zero warming 3.5%, mild increasing chile pepper heat through the glass. Same sort of idea as the Limon Y Sal version. Great balance of juicy/vibrant fruit, chile peppers, and clean adjunct lager flavors; with nice earthy hop presence/balance for the style. I have since learned that Chelada doesn't always mean tomato, but rather fruit and/or spice. Hits all marks well. Not overwhelming on any aspect. 3.87

Thanks @jkblr for getting the party started. New Mexico has begun relaxing prohibitions. I've been playing golf for two weeks (although with some interesting restrictions), and yesterday my beer place reopened. Beer and golf. I'm all set.
Like many others, my wife and I are looking forward to a further easing of restrictions, although I'm not sure how aggressively we will partake of our new freedoms. I think we'll continue to lay low and not expose ourselves to too much.
Anyway, on to a new beer. This was part of a sampler 12 pack. Buenaveza is a lager with salt and lime added, only 4.7% ABV. It does quench your thirst and I imagine I would be happy to drink it while eating spicy food. Otherwise, it's not that good.
Clear light gold color. Tiny white head.
Not much aroma. Corn and lime.
Taste follows the nose. Corn and lime. Some late salinity.
    Light bodied, easy-drinking.
