    Sorry, I misspoke.

You literally say, "Desítka" for "ten", and they'll give you the 10°. They wouldn't write "Desítka" on the menu. I believe my cousin picked this up from locals. Then again, this was specifically in Prague.

Yeah, I can't speak to which style is the most popular. Could be that the 10° beers sell more in terms of volume, but there's more examples of the 12°?

This is from Notch's website under "fun facts" for their Session Pils.

    FUN FACTS:
The Czech Republic brews varying strengths of Pilsner, and the most popular is the 4.0% ABV version known as Desítka. Yes, there really is a Session Pilsner.

I did the majority (80%) of my drinking in Prague. I never heard any of the patrons use either of the words you mentioned; they would just order the brand (e.g., Únětický) but because of the menu they knew which degree beer they would be getting. Just my personal anecdotal experience.

The important Czech word for me when ordering beer was saying velký (which means big) since I prefer 1/2 liter mugs.
We can all speculate here. As I posted above maybe it is a city vs. countryside thing? All that I can anecdotally report is that there were more selections of 12 degrees beers at the pubs I went to in Prague, Plzeň, Kutná Hora and Český Krumlov.

    Na Zdravi!

Well I hope at some point I can have my own experience too. But well...the current situation and all...

Luckily, whether it's to style or not, I still have two Sierra Nevada Summerfests in my fridge!

Oddly enough, Jeff Alworth (who's a guy that I think has a good mindset for a beer writer) had a piece here... and if you look at the comments section, you'll see that he mentioned encountering far more 12s (which stood out to me since I've always seen it stated that 10s are the most common). And then after some folks reacted by stating that 10s are more common since they are the "everyday beers," Jeff said:
Perhaps many things on this topic are essentially anecdotal. I wonder if its similar to a case of going to a beer bar in the US vs a dive bar. When I was drinking in Prague, the places I went to basically just had a choice of "light" or "dark" (this was before I was beer obsessed). The 12s seem to frequently be considered the "flagships" by the brewers.

There seems to be some interest in Czech Beer. Below is a video interview with Evan Rail who has been living in the Czech Republic since 2000 and he makes his living writing about Czech beer (and other topics). I would encourage the interested student to watch the entire video

At the 15:00 mark and beyond Evan Rail details the Bohemian Pilsner (Světlý Ležák) as being the “basic style of beer“ of the Czech Republic. He also details the 10° beer as well - in English he called it Pale Tap/Draft Beer (Světlý Výčepní pivo).

    Na Zdravi

That piece from Jeff Alworth was excellent. I bookmarked it.

    Thank you.

For what it's worth: 12P is more common in tourists areas and 10P is more common in the rest of the country. And for ordering, "Desitka" and "Dvanactka" was very common in tied houses where the beer is from the same brewery. I was there again in February and I found this to still be true.

Okay, this weekend is the unofficial start of Summer and there is still no Summerfest to be found in a 25 mile radius of my area. WTF?

@SierraTerence -- is this really because the 40th Anniversary ale is still on store shelves and my local distro is being pissy? I opted for 2 Bell's six-packs today, sales loss to SN, sorry to say.

It's taken a while, but it's finely here and spread out widely across the valley. Be patient, Grasshopper.

It's all bottles. SN, please send cans. :sunglasses:

A few complaints about Sierra Nevada and their distribution decisions. The best thing I can say here: be thankful you are not living in Pennsylvania.

    Yeah, I said that: @ecpho @tolar111

It's all good I miss PA, my Grandfather had Box Turtles in his tomato garden in Chester. Freaking hot as hell in the summer. Smoked Phillys with the old man, drank Bud and Schmidt's. Went down to Deleware to fish and crab. Life was good. Life is short

Is this the 2018 or 2019 or even older thread? People rehash the same gripes year after year.

I bypassed a 12 pack Summerfest in cans a few weeks ago to purchase a 15 pack of Oscar blues Mama's little yellow pils (for the same price). It works for me as a Czech plisner and it's available all year.

I really enjoyed the last can of Mama’s I had a month or so ago. I think this beer was recently tweaked? I’d buy more of it, but I only ever see it in the mix pack.

Yeah I really like it. I buy it in the mixed 18 pack as well. Not a fan of the low cal ipa or whatever the token juicy IPA they have to put in there but the pils, Dale's Pale Ale and the imperial red are top notch.

My Grandfather did not have Box Turtles but he also had a tomato garden in Chester and since he lived at 3rd & Booth was just a couple of blocks from the Delaware River. He did not fish though.

But damn, those tomatoes were good!!

    Cheers!

Yeah, the session ipa is why I usually avoid the pack, but I actually like the can o bliss beers so I do still pick it up every now and then when fresh because it really is a good value. G’knight really is a great beer.

The old man was on 12th Street, stayed till the mid 1980's. We used to go down to Delaware
for vacations. His old man was a Teamster and kept horse in the city.
