Over the past few months I've noticed a real shift in how some Midwest BAs identify themselves, or more specifically how some work to identify/bucket others. Of note is the growing anger toward Chicago. If I were to recap what I've read, I understand that people from Chicago are not real BAs... They hoard, steal, cut in line, ki k old ladies, support the Taliban, and sell beer for profit, all BA cardinal sins. But is that really true? Sure, every area has some newbies that don't yet get it or some privileged douche bags that will NEVER get it, but why do we let those outliers divide us?

I am very proud to be a part of this community and have had fabulous experiences with 99.9% of the interactions I have with BAs country wide.

Let's not let the indescressions of a few stand between us, or worse yet, deteriorate the community BA has helped to build and foster.

    Cheers to you all!

All of the Chicago BA's I've met/traded with/shared a beer with have been great people. When I first got into trading 4DAloveofstout helped point me in the right direction and gave me some very helpful advice. Looking forward to the Darkhorse event and seeing some friends from around the area!

I've recently had the pleasure of making some new BA buddies who are all Chicago guys. I think the "bad eggs" that we hear of do exist, but they are the minority, not the majority.

For the most part, the "bad eggs" aren't even "BA"s...they are lurkers. They may have accounts, but they only come on to read where things are available, when they are available, etc. etc. And you're right, it does give certain groups a bad name, and it's too bad. So my answer is, no we are all not "BA"s...98% of us are however.

FWIW, I have a few friends in Chicago who are huge BA's (though not necessarily on the site), and I have met a few others who have all been quite nice.

Think about it. If they're Cub fans all the above is true.

Nah, there are greedy, rude people everywhere. With a metropolitan population of almost 10 million, there is bound to be more of those people.

    Jokes aside, here's my $0.02:

Craft beer is exploding in popularity, more people are going to more events in the region, and since Chicago-are BA's go to everything because we are conveniently located geographically, we're something of an easy scapegoat for the ever-increasing difficulty of getting limited releases.

I have drank with a ton of Chicago/Chicago area BAs and they are all jerks, all of them. I would gladly drink with all of them again but they are still jerks.

I have met some great Chi-town BA's. I have heard of asshole Chicago BA's, but have not had the displeasure. High five Nate!

How's that saying go about a few bad apples? I have only had good experiences with Chicago guys at events for the most part and have even gone on to trade with them, hang out with them at other events, etc.

I know that a lot of folks feel the "camp out" mentality comes from that region. KBS day this year really seemed to be the breaking point for many people in that regard. You don't hear as many truck chasing stories coming from other regions either. What's frustrating is that this community (and the one on the other site) feeds a lot of the hype that causes people to resort to these tactics to get beer.... not to mention, far too many people everywhere feel they need to get their hands on as much of the newest release as possible to trade up for walez.

Locals tend to get upset when people come from other regions and change the whole tone events that used to be more low key and overall much more enjoyable. Based on my observation and experiences of others as well, most of the people rolling in and changing the tone have had Illinois license plates. I don't think anyone up here imagined Founder's would have to start doing ticketed releases and take away the best part of their past releases - meeting up with BAs from all over to share beers and hang out while waiting to buy some more tasty beer.

As I said, I have met many folks from Chicago and they've been cool. Things have changed and people's attitudes have changed and I'm pretty certain it's just going to get worse in the forseeable future. In the meantime, we can all still give each other shit and joke about it without taking things too seriously. That's what most of the Chicago smack talk is anyway... just bustin balls.
