I would argue argue that $20 for a 750ml bottle of beer absolutely qualifies as super expensive, even though I know that there are plenty of US breweries out there that charge even crazier prices. Also, let's not forget that these bottles are $7-8 from the brewery directly. It's all a matter of perspective, I guess.

You beat me to it. I completely agree with your position! In no way have a I found barrel aged Narwhal or Old Rasputin to have improved on the base beer.

I appreciate the education you can provide here.

Can you please inform me of which European breweries are brewing 'NEIPA' beers? How successful are they at selling these types of beers? Can you let me know what are your top 10 brands? Are you always successful in finding them fresh (e.g., less than 1 month for packaging)?

I am indeed an American, no doubt there.

    Cheers!

The 1987 Chevrolet Sprint I still drive (it is all I need) engine has only three cylinders, but that's sufficient too.
But, here is what I used to use as a signature on E-Mail:
No, no. It's not all IPAs. It also is serving an American Pale Ale, an Imperial IPA, and a Pale Ale with cannibis. :grimacing:

Habanero Sculpin is awesome. So is Watermelon Dorado. Edit: And Schlafly Pumpkin Ale, too.

Schlafly Pumpkin is widely considered the best pumpkin beer if I’m not mistaken? Habanero Sculpin is very divisive and needs to be paired with food IMO. I will give you Watermelon Dorado though, that beer is hot garbage if you ask me.

Amen! I was in my local shop where they are limiting shoppers and none of us can find what we want. Half the cans are facing the wrong way and the other half can only be identified if you have memorized the artwork for the 500 “new” monthly releases.

Almost makes me miss having only 12 options...almost.

Ya at the source they are about the best deal in beer for my money. And I suppose its just a semantic difference. $20 for a 750 ml is definitely expensive, but for a beer that I enjoy its something i can spring for 4 or 5 times a year without hesitation. Super expensive to me is stuff up at the $2/oz range that circumstances might conspire to trick me into buying once every year or two. Under a dollar an ounce is reasonable for beers as involved as geuze in my opinion

Not true at all, I buy plenty of American NE IPAs online and I’ve hauled a ton home in suitcases myself, with zero beers that have given me an issue. Sure, I’ve had some pretty badly oxidized beers, but I’ve had local beers canned within a week with the same problem. In my opinion, freshness, and ”keep cold at all times” are overrated.

Flavourings are not adjuncts, they are just taste modifiers. Adjuncts are fermentable substances, originally to use enzymes from the malt to release the sugar. And often, as in the US, to mop up excess enzymes which caused haze.

As for flavored beers, I don't mind it as long it is a complement and not the primary ingredient. Subtley like a Belgian Wit (Hoegaarden), Sam Adam's late Honey Porter and I do enjoy a good milk stout.

well said, I feel like untappd has hurt beer and made this even harder to get across. rating bias is real and if people see a rating good or bad it’s definitely sways them.

That’s assuming we can even get it :grinning:

I mean, probably down there in Paris some beer stores have it, and if I don’t want to go through the hassle of visiting that hellhole only for Cantillon or 3F I can still purchase them online. And the price would be about the equivalent in €uro, too.

I can see your point though, they are good beers and maybe worthy of being purchased every now and then. I just never do. More a matter of preference than anything and, I hardly care about « ticking » every Cantillon beers in my BA profile.

    Cheers.

In the case of countries with a Top 5 that's just the tip of the iceberg and I'm sure that there are generally a whole bunch of others around that I'm not aware of. These are not a handful of breweries scattered all over Europe, there are plenty of very successful ones everywhere. Some of these are world-class breweries that rival or even surpass many US breweries.

I can buy the German ones at a few days to a few weeks old and the European ones typically at 1-2 months. Not that it really matters because I know from personal experience that most of them are fine for up to 3 months and think that this whole mindset that NEIPAs only last for 2-4 weeks is ridiculous.

I'm sure you know that I meant no offense, I've just encountered this "good IPAs only exist in the USA" attitude a few times now and it kinda irks me.

I was thinking about it the other day, and I wish Untappd(and BA for that matter) offered a mode for rating beers that hid the scores and other reviews until after you submitted your own. I think that would help to cut down on some of that bias, but obviously wouldn't fix it entirely.

I'll join you in that lonely corner, if you don't mind. If a beer has a 'featured' ingredient listed on the label then I'm pretty much not going to be interested.
