Since regular beer advocate is on their second round I think it would be fun to casually have at unpopular opinions thread for homebrewers.

my opinion: willamette is one of the best hops for so many beer styles. Pale ales, lagers, stouts, Belgians. Don’t see it get much love here. Cheap to boot.

also taking gravity ratings on a well known system is overrated.

Actually, What Homebrew Are You Drinking posts should have a mandatory 200 character review. No one really cares how clear or murky your beer is when you post a picture, but I'd like to hear about what it tastes like outside of "good"

I am guilty of this but I mainly though people didn’t give a shit. I will start writing more.

I haven't done a character count but I'm sure my average is well below 200.

Kveik yeast is cheating. I can't get myself excited to use it. Similar profile across a huge temperature range for many strains. Pitching rate doesn't seem to matter. Turns around a beer incredibly fast. It really is ridiculous and I see why it can be attractive, but playing with fermentation temperatures and it's effect on the final product really interests me. Maybe I just haven't worked with it enough (2 beers so far) but I don't find myself seeking it out in my recipes.

Now we've brought up an interesting conversation.
It is easy to use Kveik yeast, but that's a godsend for brewers that are without temperature control. In my last apartment before moving, it was rare that I could go below 70* ambient, so it was nice to not have to rotate frozen bottles from a swamp cooler multiple times a day just so I could brew something that wasn't a saison.

I think my opinion is swayed by the fact that I used to have no real temp control and had a few beers get away from me. I would probably feel a bit differently about this had I not invested the time, effort and money in temp control. However, I wouldn't change my decisions since I get to play around with many more strains and dial in my preferred temperature and characteristics.

All this said, I can definitely see myself still playing around with various kveik in the future since I can't help but tinker and experiment.

Still, it feels like a cheat code.

Oslo from bootleg biology is the only kveik strain I consider actually clean. I still despise “lagers” made with this yeast. I can always tell the difference between Oslo and an actual lager strain.

I've got one that doesn't sit well with me....
"People that use all-in-one systems are not REAL brewers".

I call bullshit! I use a Grainfather. I also, however, develop my own recipes, mill my own grains, adjust my water profiles, measure pH, control fermentation temps & pitch rates, ferment under pressure, perform closed transfers, etc.

I bought the Grainfather because I had twin 2 yr olds at the time and there was no way I could spend all day hovering over a propane burner in the garage. With the GF, I can brew anytime I want without negative impacts on my family. It may not be as sexy as a Spike 3v system, but it IS brewing.

I submit that you are not a typical Grainfather user.

Shewww I felt like I was getting ramrodded with “Hate Citra IPA post” and “Kveik yeast is cheating “ both of which I literally just posted yesterday. For a second I thought I’d just keep my brewing to myself from now on.
