    I can't make any final choices here, since I'm only 2 deep on Focal, and 1 deep on Heady. I'll give this serious thought when I dip into my last Heady. For my usual taste, I like the whiff, and bitterness, of Focal more than the head-rush creaminess of Heady.

    But that was just my first impression. I feel like I'd have to have them side-by-side to really make any final "voting off the island" decision. Fun to try 'em though. Cheers!

    It was nowhere near the beer and it was quite obvious. That batch was not up to standards and was not that old. I know its not an isolated incident. My brother bought two logs in Maine same situation. Wound up sending them back. Off color ugly, weak aroma and taste. Its one of my favorites so Ive drank a crap ton of it and immediately noticed it was off. They probably are having trouble distributing their product since that was the first time Ive seen it around here. I understand that but you have to draw the line at some point.

    SNPA always solid and enjoyable. We had 2 big trees removed today. I wanted to do it but the power feed to the house ran thru one. The wife immediately shut that idea down, I should probably thank her......

    Well... just went outside on my back deck to drink this Focal, I turn around and what do I see?
    A pile of baby raccoons.
    At least they were not born under my roof, but just... oy. They are damn cute and they keep cuddling and stuff, but just hope they don't try and dig into the house.
    Y'all have a good night, and probably calling it early tonight (but I often slip, so who knows?). Gotta do some dinner prep in a bit.

    When this beer is fresh, it’s as good as American brewing gets, IMHO. This was canned 5/26/20, so it’s within tolerance. Absolutely love it.

    look: 4.25 | smell: 4 | taste: 3.5 | feel: 3.5 | overall: 3.75

    Very dark, nearly opaque brown body; very thick and lasting head, a mix of soapy and dense appearances. A fine roasted grain char aroma; coffee-like; mocha; quiet sourness. The taste brings a rich cocoa and slightly sour mix to the palate; charred grain bite; coffee grounds. Medium body; somewhat thin; slick.

    A near gusher on initial opening of the can (it has been sitting in the refrigerator for a few days), but the beer settles into a very fine looking dark ale with some slow and judicious mini-pours. The smell emits straight-forward heavily roasted grain notes, and I'm thinking the molasses gives the slightly sour impression. The taste and mouthfeel are when things show some weakness. Granted, the brewer's advertise this as a pre-Prohibition porter, so perhaps one shouldn't expect a fairly rich and decadent malt bomb, yet the beer isn't quite as robust as I (personally) would hope for. All in all, this is a fine porter, devoid of fancy pants adjuncts and ageing gimmicks.
