Chicagoland lagers (2020)

Both are pretty excellent. Metropolitan Alt is smoother more malty. Dovetail Alt has a little bit more hop bite in the finish while still being well balanced.

 

Beer Temple is doing a Pilsner competition...I don't think you can really link to Instagram anymore on here, but the gist is they are doing a blind taste test of all Pilsners that are available year-round in Chicago.

It's not just for Pilsners brewed in Chicago, they only have to be available in Chicago on a consistent basis.

I'm interested to see the results!

 

The at home tasting in round 2 sounds fun as well. On IG, they responded in a comment that Pilsner Urquell is not here year round. I had no idea that was true

 

It probably is on the shelf somewhere year round, but maybe we can't get it fresh year round.

 

They were talking about Unfiltered Unpasteurized PQ, which only gets sent over a few times a year in kegs.

 

ahh I see. I have had that beer once locally (in Batavia of all places) as well as at Mikeller in Barcelona. May I recommend the unfiltered Brauherren? I got one at The Beer Cellar today. Apparently it was shipped to Connecticut and then keyed and distro’d from there. Really good.

 

How does one find this when it does hit Chicago?

 

Yes it’s the Einbecker one. Apparently the US canning in Connecticut will be an ongoing thing with European beers

I tried unpasteurized Pilsner Urquell once, at a World of Beer somewhere (Savannah maybe?), it really is fantastic.

 

Laschets Inn (St. Ben's neighborhood on Irving) for certain has great kegs on going, and periodically receives specialty kegs like unfiltered Einbecker Unfiltered Pils. They carried some great Kolisch beers last summer as well, hope they will be able to repeat this Summer. Glad they get to reopen tomorrow. Their specialty kegs have historically tapped the final Tuesday of each month.

I believe Beer on the Wall in Park Ridge tapped unfiltered Pilsner Urquell last year as well. This (or Niles / Lincolnwood) is typically they extent of suburban travel for me, unless I am driving out of state.

 

Love this beer. It's on tap at Bavarian Lodge right now. Last time I had it was at Map Room, last summer.

 

The Einbecher Unfiltered Pilsner is incredible. For people who love the malt depth that is rarely achieved in the states, it appears beers like this will be “hot dropped” from time to time the same way that US breweries do limited hot drops in new markets.

It appears there will be a several awesome beers sent to the states. Uniticky just sent a batch over last month that was sent to NYC. Hoping Illinois sees this soon

They’ve got a patio. Not sure how/when they’ll enter Phase 4.
