Came across these cool looking jars of beer from a Russian brewery that look simultaneously quaint and rustic and modern at the same time. Jars of beer that come pre packaged with whole hops. The page for the Kraft brand (12% plato, 4.5% abv) says that it is unpasteurized, has to be kept at +2-4 C, so either a very cold refridgerator or lagering temperatures pretty much, and has a shelf life of 60 days.

I'm sure dry hopping in cans or bottles has been tried by some western craft breweries but there's something about a clear glass pickle jar being used that seems more appropriate and eye catching.

True. Pickled herring goes well with beer.

That looks like the Mamajuana version of beer from the Dominican Republic

I would love to try that La Conner beer (a new bottling, of course). Reading through the old reviews makes it sound incredibly cool and unique.

Well, I'm not familiar with the Russian glass jar industry but that sort of jar with a simple "screw on/off" lid in the US sure wouldn't be manufactured to be able to safely withstand the pressure when used as a package for a carbonated beverage and (again, no knowledge of Russian retailing) in the US we've all seen beers labeled "PLEASE KEEP REFRIGERATED" and/or "UNPASTEURIZED" kept at room temperature.

The addition of whole hops would appear to make it even more dangerous.
So, I'd wear a heavy jacket and safety glasses when handling that beer :astonished: (or even walking down the cooler aisle where it is sold).

As a matter of fact it requires beer. But I do love both..

Me too. I'm an old jar head and bottle fan. I'm a sucker for cool packaging on products that I do not know.

Beer in a jar is a fun novelty and all, but whats with that culinary pairing? Probably some fermented fish and boiled potatoes? Russian cuisine is hurting.

Should probably omit the sauerkraut or other cabbage-based dishes - would likely conflict with the probable light-struck aroma of the beer, too.

The marketing and appearance is awesome, but no idea about the practicality of it working out well in a commercial/retail setting. Something more along the lines of what a home brewer would do to share with family or friends.

I will readily admit that being a Swede makes me more susceptible to concepts that represent a laissez faire attitude towards fun since such an attitude is foreign to us. So that might not make me the best at risk assessments :stuck_out_tongue:.

I have to imagine though that the issue of shelf stability has been tested and found to be sufficient for those 60 days at those temperatures (the degree of attenuation achieved in the suggested temperature range), and that retailers understand that they need to handle it the way they would handle milk or other perishable items, not just for the sake of avoiding jar bombs but for keeping it fresh. Not that I would want to buy a beer that was sealed with a lid like that at 60 days old (I would be concerned about staling), as a consumer I'd expect the beer to be perhaps a week old at most at the point of purchase (giving the hops a chance to do their thing) and intended for immediate consumption.

If it was in a cooler I would buy it.
