Stout beers have long been a favorite of mine. While I love a BA stout, I have grown tired of the heavily laden adjunct stouts that taste like sugar syrup (opened a HPB 242 MPH on Tuesday night and could barely force down 6 oz., no knock on HPB, they are probably my favorite SoCal brewery)

Hoping this thread can be a discussion on all things stout available in CA.

Would love to hear some recommendations on classic, robust roasty stouts and porters that don't taste like maple syrup and marshmallows. A go to favorite of mine for years has been Kern River Class V, but haven't seen it available for a while. Obviously not available around here, but I am a huge fan of HF Everett. Also love a nice BA Stout that doesn't have all the sweet crap added in.

Speedway, BA Speedway. Pretty plain-jane and delicious.

I like Speedway, been a periodic consumer of it for years, but I find it to have a bit of an odd flavor. Did recently buy two bottles of the Noble Empire and really like that one.

It might have been OP but somebody made a similar comment in the WCIPA thread I wanted to echo: I love stouts but I am not a fan of coconut and so many stouts these days are just bukkake'd with coconut that it's offputting

Give me a good, simple roasty stout and I'm happy

    Henhouse oyster stout.
Somehow oysters turn into salted brownie flavor. I have no idea how it works.

I’m going with “old school” KRBC Class V Stout.
Coming in at 8.5% abv! I haven’t seen this released in a very long time. One on man!

Actual contribution: Onyx is one of my favorite stouts that Beachwood makes because it's just a clean, well made imperial stout...which is also probably one of the reasons it's not brewed much anymore

I always go with a classic Old Rasputin, especially if it's on nitro

I think Stone IRS is a top tier roasty stout.

good call, haven't had one for a while. Not a huge Stone fan, but always enjoyed the IRS.

I did just order a few crowlers of North Park Mocha Massage. While it does have coffee and chocolate, reviews consistently said it was roasty and not sweet. Looking forward to given in a try.

Have not had beachwood onyx, but love their stouts that I have had.

That seems to hit the "old school" flavor profile really well. Tons of simple roast. Not sweet or cloying by any means.

Agree that Class V was always solid and I miss it. I've enjoyed Yeti in the past, but haven't looked for it in awhile, not sure if OG Yeti still exists.

Sierra Nevada Porter and stout. Fall River Colossus. Old Rasputin of course. Definitely second HenHouse oyster stout.
Two of my locals (mad river and eel river)make solid porters and basic stouts.

Edge case, coffee and cigarettes from cellar maker

I'm not sure you could've gone with a thicker HPB stout if you tried. Well, maybe No Rest.

OP: Smog City's Infinite Wishes may be worth a try.

Or maybe Parabola, easy to get and always solid.

I have had Speedway Stout on tap at home for the past six years or so. It takes me awhile to get through each keg, and it's a treat to be able to pour 5-10 oz anytime and not have to commit to a bomber or even 16-oz can, and to enjoy how it ages over time.

I’ll second Sierra Nevada Porter and stout, although don’t see them on the shelves much near me (and haven’t revisited in far too long).

Deschutes black butte porter and obsidian stout have always been very solid (and good value)(also haven’t revisited in a while).

Much the same can be said about North Coast old 38.

Anchor porter used to be a classic; not sure if it’s any good now.

    Bell’s stouts are good.

Not widely available, but Russian River’s porter is (was) outstanding (is this still made?).

I had a porter from Russian river last year. It was the first dark (non sour) beer I'd ever had from them. so I don't know if its their original porter or something else, but I found it to be a bit thin and generally pretty meh.
