Hello and welcome to another edition of NBS!

Have a good one. I played Dota 2 with a friend for 3 hours last night, then was watching Looney Tunes online, and playing Lichess puzzles and practice. Still have 3 correspondence games going. I need to definitely watch some tutorial videos for the Dota 2 because I was terrible. Been playing a lot of chess the last few weeks. Still need to get another beer haul as I am running low on review stuff. I am 33 on Thursday so I will probably make a trip to one of my main stores.

Feel free to come in and tell us your experience of a new beer you have tried today. Make sure to include look, smell, taste, feel, and overall what are your final thoughts about it. Pictures are encouraged as well, something nice to look at.

Griffin Claw Flying Buffalo - Bourbon Barrel Aged - Modern Times Coffee. This was amazing. Lasting fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge milk/dark chocolate, cocoa, medium roast coffee, caramel, brown sugar, toffee, vanilla, fudge, bourbon, toasted oak, and dark bread; with lighter notes of coconut, molasses, raisin, fig, cherry, date, smoke, leather, tobacco, herbal, grass, peppercorn, and yeast earthiness. Very slight booze in the aromas as it warms. Very mild herbal, grassy, peppery, roasted bitterness; and minimal bourbon/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium carbonation and very full body; very smooth, creamy/silky/velvety/bready malt mouthfeel; light slickness, sticky, chalky, and oak tannins in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing lingering bitter dryness; no cloying/acrid/astringency. Dangerously smooth/soft, minimal warming 12% or lingering barrel booze after the finish. Perfectly balanced with super rich malts, fruity/nutty coffee complexity, and bourbon barrel presence/integration; mild earthy hops and fruity yeast. Not overly sweet/heavy from lingering dryness. Definitely one of the best in the series, glad I impulsed on the 4 pack! 4.38

    Good morning NBS
I just finished a 72 hour week about an hour ago. I'm ready for a new beer and I'm hoping you are too. Take a moment to describe how it looks, smells, tastes and feels. A picture or any other information is always good.

Here's my new beer courtesy of @beergoot
    [IMG]

16oz can stamped CD 06/01/20 BB 08/30/20 poured into a super stange glass at fridge temp, no ABV listed on can. The beer pours bright light gold in color with nearly white head. The head recedes to a thin ring and single layer of bubbles. There is a fairly complete lacing around the glass. The aroma is mild with pale malt and stone fruit. The taste is sharp with floral & grassy notes, mineral, pale malt and a moderately bitter finish. The mouthfeel is thin to medium bodied with average carbonation and a dry finish. Overall, good. A refreshing and earnest attempt at an authentic kolsch.

[IMG] Poured into a 16 oz nordic tulip glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a hazy yellow with a finger sticky white head that leaves some thin streaks of lace as it slowly settles. 4.5

Smell is tangerine, pineapple, slightly minty, papaya, and apricot I like it. 4.25

Taste follows but I think the mint starts it, tangerine, pineapple, papaya, and apricot. 4.25

Mouthfeel is bigger than medium, a tad sticky not dry, really soft gentle carbonation, and at 8% ABV really crazy drinkable. 4.5

Overall this is a really nice and slightly different NEDIPA that really is enjoyable. I would love to touch this one off again and thanks Matt for sharing this guy. 4.25 Thanks @mschrei Matt for this can. Cheers all.

my go to beer style growing up was either a Pilsner or a lager. Evolved in to stouts and ales. Today I usually drink ipa’s as my go to style with the New England variant as my favorite.

Five years ago I went to Berlin for the Champions League final : juventus vs barcelona. While there I had the usual Berlin foods including Berliner weisse. Tried it straight up and then with raspberry and then baby’s breath syrups. These servings were frothy and served in a chalice . Not a favorite style.

Fast forward to today and have tried some of the Trillium daily servings variants. The mixed berry is excellent and I will grab it whenever it is offered on their menu . Tart , refreshing , fruity, low abv, a great summer beer . Perfect reminder for hanging out in a Summertime Berlin bier stube

My new beer is Trillium’s Daily Serving : Cherry

    4.25/5 rDev -0.2%
    look: 4.25 | smell: 4.25 | taste: 4.25 | feel: 4.25 | overall: 4.25

    Canned 6.18, opened 7.4

Can poured into a chalice, appropriate glass. In Berlin they served it over ice.

Thin creamy pink foam layer settles to a pink ring , some lacings , ruby red burgundy liquid . The foam was thicker and whiter in Berlin but they poured the beer and then added the syrup. This is still an attractive pour

Aroma is if tart cherries. What more can you say? It’s supposed to be a tart beer with a fruit influence

Taste is tart cherries . Spot on.

Medium sudsing , tartness lingers , fruitful, refreshing, low abv

Good Beer and recommended that you try

    some sunrises from this week

Thanks for the kick-off @superspak ! When was your MT can canned? Sounds like the coffee held up well. I refrigerate my coffee stouts vs. cellaring other stouts to preserve as much coffee taste and aroma as possible. I really like MT's stouts and several other styles, hope I come across your pour soon.

I celebrate my Personal Independence today, due to the fact July 5, 2019 was my last planned day in the working world. I accelerated my planning the final two years after senior management flipped.

Most of my expectations have been met, beyond no travel since March 10th, and suspension of volunteer opportunities due to The Rona. Early retirement has been something percolating in my mind since coming across the FIRE subject online in the late 1990s, but I didn't get serious in regards to putting a plan into action until my final decade at work.

I have a few national brands planned for today of "beer rescues" from the singles rack at Binny's with reasonably fresh dates.

Bell's Official is my first pour. And away we go...

This beer was canned 5/12, and refrigerated the past four weeks (was not refrigerated at the store). ABV is 6.4%

Appearance: Murky orange white pour, white head dissipates quickly, leaving nominal soapy lacing. 3.5

Aroma: Sharp but unpleasant citrus and lactose aroma, pineapple lingers beneath the surface. Not sure why it smells like lactose because this beer does not contain lactose. 2.5

    Taste:
Bland hops, light citrus and mango. Bitterness wins out over sweetness. This is a very bland tasting "haze" pour, more like a session IPA. 2.75

Mouthfeel: Fizzy light carbonation lingers throughout, medium slightly creamy body, easy clean finish. 3.25

    Overall:
This is a below average bland offering, a rare miss by Bell's. I am glad I only picked up a single. 2.75

My brother who works in the industry and I are not big haze fans, but do like a balanced, flavorful pour like Old Nation's M-43 or Alarmist's Le Jus. He liked Bell's Original, I purchased on his recommendation but didn't like it. Hope you like this one more than I if you come across in the future.

Do you want to know a secret?

    doo da do

Today’s beer is ‘secretive’ in a couple of way. The first ‘secret’ is that the breweries name is Little Log Cabin but as far as I know it is just a ‘different’ branding by Tired Hands. This beer is brewed in Ardmore, PA at the Tired Hands Brewery.

The second ‘secret’ is that one of the hops used to brew this beer is Vic Secret hops but other hops are used as well: Ella and Galaxy.

    On the can’s label:

“Smile, Smile, Smile is a bright and comfy DDH Vic Secret, Ella, and Galaxy Double IPA brewed with local wildflower honey by your friends of Little Log Cabin”.

I am well acquainted with Galaxy hops; I have an IPA that is bottle conditioning now that features Galaxy hops along with some Mosaic.

I decided to learn a bit more about Vic Secret and Ella hops:

“Vic Secret is an Australian hop known for its bright tropical character of pineapple, pine, and passionfruit. Similar to Galaxy but with a lighter profile. Highly recommended as a whirlpool or dry hop addition where the tropical notes will really shine. Displays a more earthy character when added late in the boil.”

    https://www.morebeer.com/products/au-vic-secret-pellet-hops-place-holder.html

    Ella™ Hop Profile (Australia)

Previously named Stella, Ella hops are the little sister of the Australian superstar Galaxy™. Ella and Galaxy™ share the same mother, but Ella's father is a variety from Spalt, Germany. This parentage gives Ella a pleasant floral aroma that is backed by soft spice. These qualities work best in lagers and pilsners, but Ella can be incorporated into Pale Ales and IPA during dry-hopping. This will preserve some of the lighter oils that are more fruity and tropical like in Galaxy™.

    https://www.yakimavalleyhops.com/Ella_Hops_Australian_p/hopsauella1-2016crop.htm

From my homebrewing I know that Galaxy can provide very robust and vibrant flavors. It would appear to be the most powerful hop of these three varieties but the ‘wild card’ is what amounts did the Tired Hands brewers use of the three varieties? Maybe they used more of the Ella, a fair bit of Vic Secret and then the least amount of Galaxy to obtain a more balanced aroma/flavor profile? Or perhaps add some Galaxy at the end of boil (whirlpool) but used Ella and Vic Secret for dry hopping to ‘distribute’ the flavor profile. Or…

Well, as the wise owl is want to say: “Let’s find out”.

Served in my Gulden Draak tulip glass:

    Appearance:

A very hazy straw yellow color with a BIG white head.

    Aroma:

The first impression on the nose is tropical fruits but there is some citrus as well. This may sound weird but this beer actually smells ‘juicy’.

    Taste:

The flavors follows the nose: mostly tropical fruit but accompanied by some citrus as well. There is a moderate bitterness. There is also a notable hop burn on the back end of the swallow.

    Mouthfeel:

A soft, velvety body with an off-dry finish.

    Overall:

I enjoyed the aroma/flavor and mouthfeel aspects of the beer but the notable hop burn was a distraction for me. My guess is that this beer would have benefitted from a more refined use of dry hopping.

    Cheers!

Thanks for getting the thread started today, Ian.
Nine years ago my wife and I were visiting our daughter in Albuquerque when she lived there (this is around the time we started thinking of retiring to New Mexico, but that's another story). It was a Sunday and we decided to visit a brewery I'd heard about, La Cumbre. Off we go. We got there and they were just opening up. The brewery isn't in the nicest part of town and the bartender looked like an extra in Breaking Bad: shaved head, mustache, tattoos all over. Of course he turned out to be a very nice guy. We sat at the bar, conversing with the bartender. Some locals drifted in, and we had a little party with them. One of the beers we sampled was an imperial red, and it was superb. It was so good my wife got hammered, something she rarely does. This livened things up even more, because she's a really funny drunk.
Nine years later I'm picking up some beer and in the cooler I see Siren Song. It's a barrel-aged imperial red, so of course I bought a bottle.
It pours a mahogany color with a small beige head. A little bit of lace.
Beautiful aroma: caramel, cherry, vanilla, and booze.
Beautiful taste: bourbon, caramel, cherry, and vanilla.
A big beer. The alcohol is very present, but does not detract from the beer.
I hope there are more of these at the store!
    Cheers!

@ChicagoJ date was 10/22/19. Keep in mind this is a Griffin Claw product, with Modern Times only providing the roasted coffee. I probably only had it in the fridge for 1/4 the time. I really worry about chilling coffee stouts this young, as I usually only see serious deterioration of the coffee well after the 1 year mark(18 months?). YMMV. The amount of coffee is very close to KBS fresh(ish).

Arclight Soursmith Peach. Amazing sour. Solid head retention/light spotty lacing. Aromas and flavors of huge sour/tart/tangy peaches, fruit fuzz/skin/pits, apricot, lemon, lime, orange, grapefruit, plum, pear, red/green apple, melon, white grape/wine, hay, straw, grass, honey, wheat, white bread dough; light oak, vanilla, pepper, white vinegar, leather, lacto/musty funk, and yeast earthiness. Light-moderate fruity/lactic tart/sourness, fruit tang, and light yeast/oak tannin spiciness on the finish. Medium-plus carbonation and medium-full body; balanced creamy/silky/bready malts, lactic acid, fruit tang, and light tannins in the mouthfeel. Light-moderate increasing acidic/tangy dryness; minimal pucker/astringency. Dangerously smooth, minimal warming 8.5%. Amazing balance of super jammy peaches and Brett/Bacteria complexity; with a large sized wheat/malt backbone against acidity. Mild residual sweetness with lingering dryness. Another easy winner! 4.35

technically, i should have said Woodruff syrup.

    from wikipedia

    "Berliner Weisse
is often served in a bowl-shaped glass with flavoured syrups, such as raspberry (Himbeersirup), or artificial woodruff flavouring (Waldmeistersirup). The beer may also be mixed with other drinks, such as pale lager, in order to balance the sourness."

    "Woodruff
is also called Sweet woodruff, Sweetscented bedstraw, Bedstraw, Wild baby's breath, Master of the wood, Kiss-me-quick, Rockweed, Mugwet, Sweet grass and Hay plant. This perennial plant belongs to Rubiaceae family and has creeping rhizome that grows in shady European deciduous forests."

it's a green syrup added to traditional Berliner Weisse beers.

1st review on 12-6-19, this one out of the cellar for family summer vacation.
Best Carton Wild yet. Apparently Augie Carton experienced this palate cleanser dish of Koji-fermented rice called Ipgasim in NYC which inspired this wild....
Koji fermented with elderflowers and strawberries. Soy /Saki fermentation (Koji) will join sushi or any asian kitchen well.
    a) Golden haze body with thin head. You can see the live action in ragged little bubbles painting the surface like pinprick insects.
    s) Live indeed. Floral and wild yeast. Soy.
    t) Big, but subtle, energetic, slight cidery.
    f) bright, crisp, light, smokey.
    o) Wins the Asian food companion prize and perhaps the best wild yet at Carton.

Gose down easy. Founders always craft.
    a) Lovely amber color, firm 2 finger head, but as with fruit additions doesnt lace or last.
    s) Lime, Watermelon, the sea, grain.
    t) Follows aroma, wine more tart wine like qualities, perfect summer appetizer, with yeasty complexity in finale.
    f) Fruit / acid balance is perfect, with refreshing smack from the salt a dive in the ocean.

4th review. Love this brewer. Not much to do with this style, but they improved it!
    a) Large foamy head with no retention, yellow straw color.
    s) Improvement on all mexican lagers with the Persian Lime.
    t) Lovely tinge of lime and salt, beach beverage, hides the grain.
    f) Keeps you coming back for more. Refreshing, light, can drink all day at beach.
    o) Makes our annual Cape May Point vacation memorable with a stop at the brewer for take out with mexican burritos from next door (at the airport).

Alright now that I'm in the middle (short) weekend from work I think I can indulge in a can (to borrow some parlance from our own dear CANbassador, Mr. Chandler) while getting the spot tidied up a little bit and getting packed for a planned sunrise hike tonight/tomorrow. Porter's finally calmed down from all the fireworks as well, so things are settling in here at home.

Lenz Bock is a Maibock from Heater Allen, a brewery who (rightly) receives a lot of praise in the NW forums especially for their classic style brews, and Lenz Bock in particular is one that is mentioned repeatedly in adoring tones over there. I'm not overly familiar with maibocks in general, so this is part of my latest quest to better understand the lighter and lager-ier side of brewing that I never really got into previously.

Pour yields a nice pale golden liquid with a good finger or two of slightly-darker-than-white head.

Nose is quite pronounced off the bat. Doughy/bready honey malts, with some grassy/floral hops.

Flavour takes the big block letters of the aroma and zooms in, revealing a layered, more nuanced take on the same general characters. The malt brings more of the honey forward, though the doughy grains are still there. Actually kind of reminds me of honey nut cheerios (not in like the modern approach of trying to recreate exactly that nostalgic item, but in that it hits enough of the same notes, but in its own way that it evokes memories thereof). The hops balance that thick malty sweetness with a good dose of pungent earthy spicy alpha acids. There's still some grassiness and florality, but the other notes step forward a bit more.

Body is a little heftier and fuller than I expected, and it's balanced nicely with a good lively carbonation.

This is the rare example of something that I've heard nothing but good things about that actually exceeds my expectations. As stated, I don't know a huge amount about maibocks, but this definitely makes me want to learn more about them, even though I suspect others within the style may not quite reach the same lofty heights of pleasant surprise.

Cheers y'all, hope you've got something tasty going on and that you're all staying safe!

2020-01 batch of Say Nut Again from Hubbard's Cave. Bought it on Tavour, if I remember correctly.

Pours very dark blackish-brown with very little head and only a small amount of very fine carbonation. Smell is sweet, chocolate and nuts -- I think hazelnut is in the forefront because it really makes me think of Nutella.

Taste is sweet, chocolate, and hazelnuts again. As it warms up, I get a bit more of a roast characteristic. It's definitely a pastry stout. I think it tastes like Nutella, with some noticeable booziness. Sweet without being cloying.

Mouthfeel is thick, but still. Overall, this is a very tasty beer.

Many great pours this morning that I have added to my "to seek" list, including @WunderLlama 's Trillium Daily Serving Cherry, @VABA 's Aventinus and @lordofthewiens La Cumbre Siren Song.

Thank you @lordofthewiens and @scream for your well wishes, and to @superspak for your follow-up response regarding the coffee. I too find some coffee pours hold up well the first 6-12 months, there are other offerings that do not so. Cheers!

This was canned 3/3/20, refrigerated since I took it home a month ago, with a 5.9% ABV. The can states "Hints of: Kiwi, Lychee and Feijoa." I'm familiar with the first "hint", had to look up the other two. And away we go....
