Ozark Sabro Single Hop IPA, 6.0% ABV, 4.17 Overall

Pours an effervescent gold with a thumb of pearl colored head. A little hazing with great lacing & good head retention

    S: Green melon, citrus, weedy

T: Gassy, catty, limey with green melon & mint up front, plus some dryness. Dryness, cattyness, and green melon as this warms, some peach as well. Finishes dry with green melon, peach & cattyness

MF: Creamy with medium body, nicely balanced

Pretty drinkable, I do like it better than the one I had on draft at the brewery a few weeks back, solid for a single hop varietal IPA. I only have a can, would pick up more if I came across this

Smauk, a smoked Sour Ale aged in oak barrels for 12 months by German brewery J. Kemker (7% ABV).

Pours a cloudy, deep mahogany coloration with an amber hue and a large, frothy head. Smells of smoked, bready malt, chocolate and a distinct, slightly tannic oak presence.

Taste is an excellent balance of smoked, bready malt, chocolate, some dark fruit, with notes of plum, and raisin, lighter tart and fruity esters, with notes of red apple and gooseberry, some juniper, a distinct earthy and tannic oak presence, light citric acidity and just a hint of musty funk. Finishes with a light bitterness and medium tartness, with some dark/estery fruit, smoke and oak lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

An excellent smoked sour ale with a great balance of of quite subtle smokiness, medium acidity, subtle funk, some dark and estery fruit and distinct chocolate and oak notes, making for a somewhat unusual, but superbly balanced flavor profile where the earthy, tannic oak presence stands out particularly. This is only the second beer I had from Kemker, with both being excellent though. They really seem to do these coolship-fermented, oak-aged beers very well and I will definitely be on the lookout for more of their stuff.

What the hell. Probably palate burnt right now but lets do one more Maine brew.
    Orono Brewing Totally Tubular
TDH with Strata, Topaz, El Dorado and Citra.
Pours a hazy lemon yellow with a snow white head that recedes quite quickly and leaves lots of sticky lacing.
Aroma is of citrus, pine, grapefruit and muted tropical fruits.
Taste follows with lots of citrus and pine notes and tropical fruits in the background. Not sweet and nicely bitter.
Feel is medium/light and dry on tbe finish. Light malts support the hops. A nicely balanced, easy drinking beer that I find doesnt have a "pop". I may have some fatigue due to a few hoppy beers. Good beer but I may like straight Tubular better. Will have to re assess. Have a great night folks![IMG]

This supposed west coast IPA is a musty and malty mess. Might just be old, but without a date on the can, there's no way of knowing.
Can't all be winners, but I'd settle for drinkable, and this isn't.
    Back with something else soon.

Greetings NBS friends on a pretty spectabulous summer day from Northern Indiana, and Happy July 4th Weekend. I have a couple of beers this evening, including a big ol’ stout I’ve been eyeballing for a couple of months now.

First, though, an unhazy hazy from an iconic brewery in our beer nerd world.

This is the unhaziest hazy beer I’ve seen - it’s not clear yellow, but the haze it has looks like the hop haze I’d see in “old school” IPA’s. The nose features citrus aromas, including tangerine and grapefruit, but they’re a bit muted.

The taste includes tangerine and grapefruit flavors, but it’s also muted. This isn’t old (canned 6/16/20, thanks to my super secret “Lagunitas date decoder” ring), but it comes across almost like a session IPA with a smidge more feel.

I’m a big Lagunitas fan (old school Sucks is a Top 25 beer for me), but this is a miss to me. I’ll gladly work through the rest of the 6er, but this isn’t an example of a hazy IPA, other than the lack of bitterness and the softer mouthfeel. That’s not enough for me.

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz long stem tulip glass canned on 6/10/2020. Pours a hazy orange with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves a thick ring of lace as it slowly settles. 4.5

Smell ripe melon, guava, passionfruit, marijuana, apricot, and a little grapefruit. 4.25

Taste follows cantaloupe, guava, passionfruit, marijuana, apricot, and grapefruit really nice and better than the nose. 4.5

Mouthfeel is bigger than medium, a tad sticky but not dry, soft gentle carbonation, and at 7.6% goes down plenty easy, but bigger in flavor. 4.5.

Overall this is a very nice NEDIPA, that has some West Coast flavors. Thanks @jzeilinger for this tasty can and awesome glass. 4.5

Sticking with imperial IPAs, this next one is Lord Hobo's 5 year anniversary IIIPA (10% ABV). Only 5 years? That's surprising!

    Hobo V

What's not surprising is that they went with a massive IPA. Back to surprising: it's not hazy. Hmmmm.

This is another throwback imperial IPA. The closest analog is probably Brown Shugga. It's moderately sweet, with a strong malt backbone driven by caramel, along with a toasty finish. The hops are piney and juicy, with candied orange and honey leading the way.

It's really enjoyable. If Lord Hobo wanted to set the bar high with a big, bold imperial for their anniversary, I'd say they easily cleared it.

    Fossil Cove Brewing's T-Rex on Peaches, a 10.0% ABV Barrel ( Bourbon& Wine ) aged Triped. 3.87 overall

Pours an effervescent amber with rapidly falling beige head. A little head retention & lacing

    Some peach, red grapes

T: Boozey ( Bourbon ) Peach, dryness & oakyness up front, plus some honey notes. A little peach bourbon & pineapple as this warms, plus barrel dryness. Finish dry with peach brandy notes & a little pineapple & lime

MF: Medium body and restrained carbonation,

Had this on draft last year, liked it better, this is solid, just not sure it is worth damn near $ 6.00 a can

#2, courtesy of our beer nerd friend @Roguer in NBS BIF #11, this is a BA imperial stout featuring maple, chocolate, and vanilla that is a collab between Aardwolf and Magnify. I’ve been looking this over since I received it. No more looking - time to tackle this bruiser.

Pours black with a little leakage to mahogany on the top and there’s a dark tan head, but you have to look fast to catch it, because it disappears almost simultaneously on a really aggressive pour.

The nose has some booze, as expected, but there’s also a lot of maple syrup and chocolate aromas. I am now officially salivating. The maple and chocolate are forward on the taste, but there’s also vanilla, and the barrel - oh the barrel at the end of the taste. It sits back and, as you work your way through the glass, you realize you didn’t slap Icy Hot on your chest whilst enjoying this beer, it’s the barrel slow playing your palate. Wow.

The mouthfeel is a little less substantial than I’d like to see in an imperial stout, but this is still a great sipper. Well done.

Pale, straw yellow body; excellent carbonation; fairly thick and frothy white head. Soft light cereal grain smell; mild bread crust. The taste follows along the lines of the aroma; nice subtle hop bitterness rounds things out; some mineral notes; light, dry grass. Light to medium body; crisp and semi-dry.

This is a lovely pilsner, clean and crisp as well as balanced and nuanced.
    -----------
Spent some time trying to dig up some old reggae tunes, primarily various versions of 'Johnny Too Bad' (by e.g., The Slickers, UB40, Taj Mahal, Bunny Wailer), plus some others like Freddie Notes & The Rudies 'Montego Bay' (not the Bobby Bloom Top 40 hit from the early 70s).

The reason is I want to re-record another mix CD of mine that had a single audience - my friend Dave back in Mansfield, OH. He and one of his band's were playing and recording 'Johnny Too Bad', so I had a wild hair to do a 'best of' album of 'Johnny Too Bad' songs. Naturally, I couldn't find enough variations to fill an entire CD, so other reggae tunes and even an Allman Brothers version of 'Mountain Jam' (with Johnny Winter) were included.

Anyway, fighting through the dusty bins and semi-organized filing system I have for digital and physical media, I found nearly everything so I don't have to resort to buying digital downloads of everything in order to recreate this disc.

Man, I love my music! And beer goes well with tuneage...

That's a shame both for your drinking pleasure and for the name of the drain-poured beer. My Dad had a book he loved about a hunting and fishing club in Vermont. One of its members brewed some moonshine called Old Stump Blower. I've always liked that name.

Geordie Beer Geek, an Oatmeal Coffe Stout brewed with honey infused Columbian Nariño Aponte coffee beans by English brewery Wylam (7.5% ABV).

Pours a pitch-black coloration with a large, creamy head that recedes quickly. Smells of roasted malt and coffee, with an intense coffee aroma that brings hints of vanilla, cardamon and blueberry, as well as some honey and dark, bitter chocolate.

Taste follows the nose, with some roasted, caramel malt, but being very much dominated by the intense and rather nuanced coffee presence, with notes of quite bitter, dark and roasted coffee beans and spicey and fruity accents of vanilla, cardamon, cinnamon, cherry and blueberry, as well as some equally dark and bitter chocolate and hints of honey. Finishes with a medium bitterness and some dark, bitter coffee and chocolate lingering in the aftertaste. Smooth mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

An excellent coffee stout with quite a rich and complex coffee presence that harmonizes very well with the roasted, caramel, chocolatey malts here, giving this a rather roasted, bitter character that is very much enhanced by subtle spice and fruit notes and a light honey sweetness, with the flavors developing nicely as this warms. One of the best Coffee Stouts I've had, I reckon, although perhaps just a tad lacking in body and mouthfeel.

    Good evening, NBS faithful.

There has been a lot of added stress in the stronghold lately. My shop has stayed open through the Covid crisis so there has been a lot going on with keeping my team safe and well. I know more about policy writing than I ever wanted to know. Then the missus had major shoulder surgery. Three torn tendons, damaged labrum, a Mt. Everest sized bone spur, torn bicep. No clue how or why, but she had been in progressively increasing pain with decreasing use of her right-hand for some time. So, fun on both fronts.

I did manage two other new beers this week. One was even fresh - Mast Landing Runner's Daughter milk stout that was outstanding - superb blend of coffee, sweet, vanilla, peanut butter, cocoa - delicious. And a bit older but not in the archaeology did that is my beer stash - Clown Shoes Don't Fear the Blender. New England IPA that was canned fruity and tasty.

So, what have we unearthed for the legit new beer today? Still in the Trillium layer. Free Rise Saison, probably four years old.

Pours golden, slightly hazy, enormous rocky head that hangs well.

The smell is probably a bit subdued, but It is yeasty, bready, and very Belgian with the usual suspects of spice and fruit. Banana, grassy, lemon. I get the wheat pretty clearly.

This stuff tastes pretty good. It is fairly typical and represents the style well, and I would say well-constructed. Very grainy and slightly sweet with wheat in the foreground. This is buoyed up by lemon notes, clove, white pepper, and further anchored by an earthy presence. Nice, restrained phenolic bite.

A bit short of medium bodied, amply carbonated, nice bitterness on the finish to reset the taste buds. Good brew, a solid 4 or maybe a bit higher.

Smell cherry vanilla, chocolate, slightly woody, toffee, and a hint of booze, not over the top at all but present for me. 4

Taste follows cherry, chocolate, oaky vanilla, toffee, and a little alcohol lingers for a bit after each sip. 4

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, soft gentle carbonation, a touch dry, and at 11.1% it drinks maybe a little bigger, but still goes down easy enough. 4

Overall this is a really made imperial stout that I would gladly revisit if given the opportunity. Thanks Jeff @jzeilinger for this can my friend. 4 Night all.
