Got a chuckle today, I was informed in no uncertain terms by an Instagram beer "influencer" (their word, not mine) that they were responsible for creating the social media buzz that supports craft brewing and "social media hype" that created whales.

That "influencer" was 12 when I joined BeerAdvocate, which has done more for craft brewing than the entire influencer community has ever or will ever do.

    Cheers!

You should share his info so we can see the boy genius who saw the future of beer.

Well of course this is a thing...

BA is the closest thing to social media I use. Am I missing anything?

Does he understand that “whales” existed when hype could only circulated by word of mouth and physical print? Who am I to say anything though, I’m in his age group as well...

Influencers are a very self-important people. Let them have their little victory, their fragile egos need the attention and honor.

You forgot the part about a 'self-described' title.

I always chuckle when I read something in the news, especially an article about some entertainment celebrity, being described as a "social influencer." Geez Louise, c'mon. The head on most of these people is already too big!

Oh, I don't know - it likely works the other way 'round, too.

"So, what influenced you to avoid that brand or brewery?"
"Oh, I'd say the hype and internet social media buzz surrounding it..."

Let them have their little fun. Fame, of any kind, tends to be fleeting.

Well shoot, how am I going to follow/like/whatever if I don't who it is?

I guess I'll have to start searching for users going by variations on TheInfluencer (The_Influencer, UnderTheInfluence, Influencer1990...)

Celebrities have been social influencers for as long as there have been celebrities. Having a twitter-esque name for it did not invent it.

It seems that the hubbub was caused because instagram influncers want a seat on the board of some industry trade group, which is just ludicrous.

I've heard (and already knew before I asked) from two brands recently "social media and certain influencers" are their marketing strategy. A tiny piece of me dies inside but if it works, who am I to call it stupid.

In the case of one, their marketing and brand came before making an actually decent product. The other, their product is good but in a category I dare not utter here.
