A new IPA substyle – Bavarian IPA!?!

I was at my local supermarket earlier today and in the beer store section they had a stack of 12-packs with the logo of Devils Backbone and Spaten with a branding of:

“München On Hops - Bavarian IPA”

    What!?!:astonished:

I visited the Devils Backbone website to learn:

“We’ve been brewing world class beers inspired by German traditions for over a decade, so when Spaten, the granddaddy of all Oktoberfest breweries, called on us to collaborate we thought, “Let’s brew the hoppiest new-school German party beer this side of München” (a.k.a. Munich, for our stateside friends). So that’s what we did. München On Hops uses all German ingredients and abides by the Bavarian purity law, but we gave it some American flair with extra hops straight from the source. Grab a handful of steins and celebrate this Oktoberfest by dancing on benches with your hop-loving freunde.

    Hoppy, Bready & Fruity notes.

Malts: German Pilsner, Light Munich, Cara-Hell, Malted Wheat, and Acidulated

Hops: Hallertau Blanc, Calista, and Hull Melon

    ALC/VOL: 6.7

    Color: Deep Golden”

    https://www.dbbrewingcompany.com/beverage/munchen-on-hops/

I am familiar with Hallertau Blanc and Hull Melon – they are ‘new wave’ hops from Germany.

I had to research Calista hops. Firstly, this must be a new hop for the Devils Backbone folks since they misspelled it on their website – it has two l’s: Callista.

“Callista was developed by the Hop Research Center in Hüll, Germany. Its low alpha acid content and strong aromatics make it an ideal choice for late kettle additions and dry hopping. Callista's aroma and flavor profile is characterized as citrus, stone fruit, passion fruit, red berries, and gooseberry.”

    https://www.morebeer.com/products/gr-callista-pellet-hops-place-holder.html

So, another ‘new wave’ hop from Germany. Maybe this beer does deserve a new sub-style name of Bavarian IPA?

I have no idea how this beer tastes since I was given a food shopping list from my wife with an ‘order’ of “And don’t buy any beer!” What a party pooper!:slight_frown:

    Cheers!

    Both AB-InBev breweries.

(Which I always have to remind myself in the case of DB whenever I see their Striped Bass Pale Ale on the shelf and think:
"Are they nuts? Going up against the mighty AB-InBev trademark lawyers!")

If I offer to go to the grocery store with too much energy mine immediately knows I have plans to get beer there or stop to or from that location. It’s like a sixth sense...

As for the beer, hope I see it. DB has a soft spot as they were one of the first VA crafts(Before the buyout) I tried. 6 Point IPA was my shit.

I've always wanted to play grammar police! In German (Deutsch) it would be IST!

I predict that in exactly 1 year there will be multiple threads here with people complaining about the proliferation of Bavarian IPAs and how no one brews anything else. Also, lederhosen will be all the rage.

Peak Organic used to have a hoppy Oktoberfest called Hop Harvest Oktoberfest, and it was freakin' awesome. Pity it's been retired for like 5-6 years. My buddy and I brewed a "German IPA" around the same time, using all Pilsner/Vienna malt and German hops. It was... okay.

Why not? We've already got "Italian" Pilseners.

Wasn't the first Bell's Leaves of Grass beer a "German" IPA? I know it was damn good. I wish we saw.more ipas with noble hops. I personally enjoy the hull melon beers I've had but I'd be more interested in more noble hops. Still waiting for the noble hopped neipa.

If only there were a way I could obtain beer made to my.specifications  any ideas @JackHorzempa

I did! Thought it was quite good. Very reminiscent of a beer in the vein of two hearted - but the German malts had a nice breadlines and the hops had that spiciness you get from Noble hops. Id pick it up again and drink it.

You meant to say "malt" vs. "hops" here, right?
