It's just a different kind of marketing for a company.

Traditional ads or ads with someone who has a big following....regardless of its a legit following or purchased.

There's a good enough chunk of people who will see a product pushed by someone they follow and think I want to try that. Some will be curious if it's actually good but then there are those who will try it just because of who they follow

End of the day it brings awareness of the product. That's what the company wants.

    Haha.

The murky waters with some influencers beer or otherwise is how legit their following is. IG can see purchased following and likes which just adds an illusion of being influential. It would depend on the company to vet those real vs fraudulent.

If the producer of the product has a principle motivation of "bringing awareness of the product" it very well may be that the "legitimacy" of the influencer is very much a secondary concern. I mean any 'salesperson' could be criticized so what does "legitimacy" objectively mean?

I am reminded of an old Oscar Wilde quote:

"There is only one thing in life worse than being talked about, and that is not being talked about."

Just get the word out about your product and let the consumers ultimately decide how they want to spend their money?

    Cheers!

P.S. A wise company would utilized multiple sources of getting the word out: old school advertising and the new world of social media.

I think that what @Thirst_trappist was referring to was that you can purchase bots that will like and follow your account so the amount of exposure a particular individual can provide may be misrepresented.

Of course, people purchase.those.fake likes and fake followers exactly because those inflated.numbers get them.before more human eyes so even then it's not cut and dry
