So I found an older (6 months maybe) Dreadnaught in a box with some other beers and I decided to get a fresh one to compare them. I live in Bum Fuck Indiana so FFF beers don't sit on the shelves and I will assume each was fresh when I bought them.

I had my daughter put them in separate glasses and it was obvious which one was older based not only on the aroma but by the taste as well.

But I was wrong! I figured my daughter screwed up so I grabbed the remainder of the two bombers and confirmed that the older one had a significanty better aroma and fresher taste.

The last time I had a Dreadnaught was about 18 months ago and I loved it. Since then I have had a shit load of world class IPAs and this beer has definitely slipped down the rankings for me.

I noticed a difference between fresh and not. One smelled like fresh citrus fruits, and the other was a malty slightly resinous aroma. The former was fresh.

Ill take a case of dueling Dreadnaughts anyday. I actually have told a few people that i once let a Dreadnaught sit for about 3 months and that motha f$%cka tasted like sweet nectar from a pair of candy boobs. It seemed to have garnished a fuller body.

    Nuts!

Three Floyds beers have this unique element of hoppiness to them, just awesome.

Also glad to hear this as I've had one in my cellar since August that I just haven't gotten too. And I'm trading for a fresh one soon, guess I'll do the same over the holidays and report back.

I've had the exact opposite experience, and have found Dreadnaught to be significantly worse when it is old. Makes me very wary about buying it because at $10/bomber it tends to sit around at a number of places. I love it fresh, but it's hard to know if that's what you're getting, even if it just showed up at the store.

At the bottle shop I frequented in Milwaukee the beer guy stopped ordering any Dreadnaught unless it showed up new on the distributor's list, because he had the same problem

I have learned many things about beer this year, but one thing shook me to my core.

It was August and I was on my way up to Chicago to Lollapalooza. Me and two of my friends went ahead of the others in our group so we could make a detour to FFF and Castle Vav. When we got to FFF, we decided to have lunch. As I looked over the beer menu, nothing really took me as something I just have to try. So I ordered the Dreadnaught. Had it a thousand times before, but never on tap at FFF, and ive been there many times. I was sure this was a solid choice. I love this beer. It never blows my mind, but I always enjoy it. I then proceeded to have said mind blown. Holy shit. I will never look at a bomber of Dreadnaught the same again. Having it fresh from the source is so much better. And thats saying something considering how wonderful it already is. The smell, the texture, the bitterness....so amazing.

Long story short, fresher is better. While I agree that some DIPAs will hold on to certain characteristics and even develop new ones, the fresher the DIPA the better the DIPA.

    go have one on tap...

Maybe that 2005 bottle of Dreadnaught sitting in the laundry room (yup, still) is worth opening after all...or maybe I can get an 02.02.02 out of it!
