Brevity in a joke/quip in conversation can be a great show of wit. Sometimes the buildup of a story can add to the enjoyment of the experience of a joke, even if said joke can be boiled down more - as Dave points out.

Different situations call for different techniques, I would argue.

I won't even talk about delivery....

Goddammit! I just walked right into that one.

That is so true, but each to his own. My Grand Dad had a story about biscuits that originated from a bodily cavity. He was a self trained lawyer that knew Bull Connor well, but hated him. He told long stories that were never always the same. He was clever that way, and in many others as well. His name was JB and my Mom named two cats JB.

To me it's like a gift that is complicatedly over-wrapped. The gift inside better be pretty damned impressive to make the extra difficulty to get to it seem worthwhile.. As someone who is part of many humor pages dedicated to making puns, I may be more sensitive to the length of a set-up, since puns are a form of humor highly reliant on brief, concise, well crafted set-ups. I hafta agree with Shakespeare generally about brevity in humor.

Eh... the comedy is always short - it's a punchline as @dcotom pointed out.

Guess you're not a fan of Aesop?

    1. Two friends are walking their dogs together. One has a big black lab, while the other has a minuscule chihuahua. They pass a bar and the lab owner says, “Let’s get a beer.” The chihuahua walker complains, “That would be great, but we can’t take our dogs in there.” The first responds, “Watch me.”
The lab owner strolls in with her dog and orders a beer. The bartender tells her, “Sorry, you can’t bring your dog in here.” “He’s my seeing eye dog,” the woman replies feigning offense. The bartender quickly apologizes and serves her the beer.
The other woman follows, her chihuahua in tow, and orders a beer as well. Again the bartender says there are no dogs allowed in the bar. “He’s my seeing eye dog,” the woman replies. “Yeah, right,” the bartender says, “A chihuahua? Give me a break.”
Without missing a beat, the woman replies, “They gave me a chihuahua?!”

My favorite short bar joke is
A horse walks into a bar and orders a beer. The bartender puts one in front of him and says" Why the long face"?

Hitch used to tell that joke. His completely straight delivery and accent made it work so well.

Haha reminded me of this one, adapted to beer.

Blind man walks into a huge beer store with shelves of beer and beer taps in every direction. The man takes the leash of his seeing eye dog and starts swinging the dog around by the leash over his head. A concerned employee quickly intercedes. "Can I help you sir?!" he asks. "No thanks," the blind man replies, "Just looking."

    Hey BA’s

I don’t know what they are feeding the quahogs around here but this is a sampling size of what I’ve dug up this year. Big ones like this make you limit out in a hurry, don’t need many to fill a peck.

We had a great beach walk this morning, Barrier Beach near Squaw Island in Hyannisport. My wife has good knees so she takes the point.
