I’m baaaaack, and it’s the third week in a row. I just wanna say that I like the new format mostly because I can’t wait until Sunday when I get a new beer. We’re a little slow at work and took a long weekend for the 4th week in a row so I took advantage and drove to the big city for a shopping-beer run. I was going to get a Oktoberfest I haven’t had to post this weekend, but decided it wasn’t time yet since we’re in AZ and it’s just too hot. I will get some before Sept 19-20 to participate in the first O’fest tasting for sure. I did pick up the Full Nelson DIPA, 8.74 abv though it doesn’t say so on the can, and it’s another winner from La Cumbre though I think the Project Dank is still my fave.

Medium head, somewhat hazy golden-orange that’s typical for Nelson beers, some lacing. Smells of herbal hops, (still pretty fresh with a can date of 7-22), tropical fruit, candy. Tastes wonderful like all of the La Cumbres I’ve had. Herbal hops, taste the Nelson but it’s not as prevalent as other beers, melon, mango, peach, pineapple, and probably grapes as that’s a hard one sometimes to ID. Well balanced but bitter.

La Cumbre is a great brewery from the Land of Enchantment and I’ve never had a beer from them that wasn’t good. If you like hoppy ales, mostly WCIPA style, than this is a brewery for you. Bravo, well done, cheers!

SweetWater As Long As There's Water Berliner Weisse with Acai,4.8% ABV; 3.48 overall

Pours an effervescent a pin tinged gold with 2 fingers of cream colored head. Traces of head retention & lacing

S: Plenty of berry, not much else

T: Tart blueberry with a little sweetness mixed in up front. plus dryness. A little tart black berry and lime as this warms. Finishes with berry tartness, plus some sweet blueberry & dryness

MF: Medium body, fairly lively carbonation

This is decent for the style, easy to drink, but not one that I'd do a repeat buy on

[IMG] Poured into a 13 oz tulip glass not sure when it was canned. Pours a very attractive dark yellow with a 2 finger sticky white head that leaves big thick streaks of lace with nice retention. 4.25

Smell is orange sherbet, Apple Jacks, vanilla, and fruity pebbles maybe, yikes not sure about this one. 3.25

Taste follows orange sherbet, vanilla, and fruit pebbles mostly the green flavor lime maybe. 3.25

Mouthfeel is bigger than average, soft gentle carbonation, a tad sticky, and goes down easy enough if you can get over the flavor profile. 4

Overall I can’t say I will drink this one ever again, but it is certainly different. Wow is all I can really say. 3.25 Pipe Dream yet another let down.

This evening, my partner and I are both grabbing Samuel Smith's stouts: she's going with the classic Organic Chocolate stout, while I'm trying the Imperial Stout for the first time. As soon as she read the label she got excited - until she saw the ABV. "What the shit, only 5%?" Ahh, that's my girl.

As an aside, this British brewer refers to this beer as an ale - twice! - on the back label. Take that for whatever you feel it's worth.

My review is fairly descriptive in terms of specific flavor and aroma notes, so if you want that, check out the link. I'll summarize here: yes, it's only 7% ABV; yes, it's a touch thin in comparison to the double-digit monsters we consider "imperial" here in the US. And with those caveats in place: yes, it's full bodied and full of flavor! Will I pick it over, say, Ten Fidy? No, I'm still going to prefer those richer, thicker, chocolatey-er stouts, but that's more personal preference than a testament to quality.

Really, this is a classic and tasty stout - but it's not something to which my palate is accustomed. No surprise there. I would have loved having this on tap while in the UK (as opposed to Guinness, which was everywhere).

Jet black body sporting a thin yet creamy light brown head. Heady aroma filled with earthy delights; cocoa, vanilla, muted esters; dull roasted grain notes; weak coffee. Complex taste profile; cocoa, milk chocolate, cherries; mocha and coffee; shaded elements of alcohol. Heavy body; velvety and warm; sludgy; big residual sugar presence.

This beer brings a huge and diversified sensory experience to the table. The coffee element is fairly subdued but not completely hidden. The entire taste element is rich and luxurious, very diverse. This is also mirrored in the mouthfeel. Bold and complex, intense yet with a mellow note, extremely enjoyable.

Well, good guy that I am (at least I like to think so), I go into work tomorrow for six hours.

And without getting into the boss' family drama that brings me out of retirement, I will say that enjoying this massive beer for my final adult beverage of the evening is a fine way to "look forward" to earning a paycheck again. Well, perhaps a cash payment.

Yes, even during warm weather, a delicious, well-crafted big beer is a joy. Regardless of circumstances...

    Hello New Beer Weekend!!!

Another work week in the books, and I can enjoy my day off tomorrow. I'll be doing it at home this week, and grilling the hell out of dead animals. That's the life.

So now on to beer, and something I picked up last Sunday in Sioux Falls, South Dakota.
Nonsense IPA from Remedy Brewing in Sioux Falls. 7% ABV.

This IPA really is good, the hops linger in my throat, and I'm really digging it tonight after a long work week.

    Review:

Pours a nice copper color. 1 finger slightly off white head. Retention is good, and there's a nice foam ring around the rim of the glass.
The nose has a tropical feel to it. Some mango, grapefruit, pineapple.
Taste - Now the taste is way more pine than the tropical, there's almost no tropical fruits in it, it's pretty much all a pine IPA.
The body is decent, and the hops really linger, and cling to my throat.
Just a solid over all IPA.

This will likely be my last new beer for the weekend. I do have a lot of beer in my fridge, but new ones are limited, unless I pop open some Bruery bombers that @Orca_Whale sent me. Since I want to grill tomorrow, not a good idea.

Enjoy your new beers this weekend.

Smell is vanilla beans, cocoa nibs, hazelnut, back strap molasses, roasty coffee, coconut, and a hint of warming alcohol. Very inviting. 4.75

Taste follows vanilla, deep dark chocolate, molasses, roasty black coffee, hazelnut, coconut, and a just a tickle of booze in the bold, balanced, and lingering finish. 4.75

Mouthfeel is BIG, gentle carbonation, a little dry as expected, and at 13% the alcohol is well hidden, chewy yet kind of creamy the warmer it gets. 5

Overall this is a glorious Stout, every sip makes me feel kind of funny below the waist. World class in my opinion. Wowza! Evil Twin and Hoof Hearted collaboration. 4.75

Many people are of the opinion that you should start malty and then go hoppy but not me, I prefer malty so that is what I like to end with and I have found that it really levels my palate out and leaves me on the right note for the evening.

Seasonal creep kind of sucks but the added benefit is that when the Fall beers roll around I get an early jump on the beers that I enjoy, Oktoberfest and Pumpkin Ales. Tonight I am trying Funk Brewing Funktoberfest. Canned on 08/10, 16 oz. This one pours dark Amber and hazy. Has a kind of odd but not bad sourdough bread smell, taste much of the same. I don't dislike this one but it's not one I am going to reach for repeatedly during the season like I will a Sly Fox Oktoberfest. Definitely worth trying for the unique take on the style and certainly drinkable but this single will be enough for now.

2020 12.7 ounce bottle poured into a DFH tulip. Small head over a dark orangish body. Definitely smell the barrel along with bourbon and malt and a toffeeish sweetness. Taste reflects the smell but a strong sweetness, surely from the honey, intrudes. I can't tell is this is a bad thing or not but I believe this is mischaracterized as a tripel. It's something else, maybe a Belgian strong pale ale or medium dark ale. This isn't to denigrate this at all, which is a very pleasant experience particularly because the booze is understated. But someone trying this expecting a tripel is getting something else beyond doubt. Mouthfeel is just fine for a sipping beer.

Although I enjoy barrel aged beers a great deal, particularly how Jackie O's does them, they in essence create hybrid beers like the doodle craze with dogs. In both cases the end product pleases the consumer but this calls for the styles to reflect that so that there are reasonable expectations.

    Good evening NBW
I picked up this imperial stout last week. They've been sitting around for eight months and finally were marked down to $5 a piece. Central State Hypsenor
    [IMG]
    The review:
12oz can stamped 01/30/20 poured into a Spiegelau stout glass at fridge temp 11.5% ABV. The beer pours dense black with thick copper tinted brown head. The head recedes to a half inch cap. The aroma is mild with caramel and roasted malt. The taste is bittersweet chocolate and caramel with slight ashy roasted malt bitterness on the finish. The mouthfeel is medium plus bodied with just less than medium carbonation and a mostly dry finish. Slight ethanol finish. Overall, good, not great. Can states good to drink fresh or age. The entire package feels like they were holding back which isn't what you expect in a stout at this price point (2×12ounce cans for $12). Maybe that's why these cans are now in the singles cooler 8 months later.

Central State has yet to wow me. Most of their stuff is haze that I won't touch, so I haven’t given them many shots. This overpriced & average stout hasn't moved the needle. Cheers all!

Hi NBWers. California is on fire, and it's bad. I'm lucky to not be in an evacuation zone currently, but with a thunderstorm rolling in tonight, dry lightning could change that in a literal flash. I've got fires on all sides due to the lightning last week, so no matter which way the wind blows the air is smoky and unhealthy.

Grabbed a Casey beer at random from the cellar.

Casey Brewing and Blending - The Cut - Peach (Gala). Bottled 8/15/2017.

From the brewery: "When we bottled this over 2.5 years ago, it developed a hint of THP, an off flavor that we rarely find in our beer but one that almost always goes away. It hung around for a while and I wrote it off. We moved it upstairs to eventually get rid of. When Eric and I went to dump it, we tasted it to be sure. We were both like, damn. This will become one of your favorite Cuts, I promise."

L - hazy golden straw with tiny ring of white head

S - peach candy, barnyard funk, tart peach skins

T - intense peach overwhelms the funk. Even after letting it warm up, it's all peach. Low acidity for a Casey beer. Tart but refreshingly so rather than mouth puckering.

M - medium carb, light body

O - Very one dimensional. I usually find fruited Casey beers to be overwhelmingly acidic, but this is on the tolerable side. I do wish some of that funk on the nose translated into the flavor, but if it's there, it's well hidden under the big stonefruit taste.

A: Beer pours a bright red body out of the can. The head of beer is a faint pink almost white color. As the head fades there is still a large amount of carbonation bubbles left.

S: The aromas match the description on the can. The beer smells of the Kool Aid I drank as a kid. Seems like lemons are the prominent smell. There is also a slight sweetness similar to cherries. However, the sweetness is somewhat faint.

T: The taste mostly matches the nose, but I would prefer the beer to be sweeter if it is modeled after Kool Aid. However, the main flavor from the beer is a tart lemon.

M: The beer's mouthfeel is fairly light with a slight bite from the the sour flavors.

O: The beer smells and looks like the Kool Aid that I liked growing up but lacks the sweetness I want. Not a bad beer just not as sweet as I hoped for.

Visited the tap room for the first time on friday. It has been on my taprooms to visit list for years. I decided it was time to go there.
    https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/profile/683/5850/

Tested from the tap at brewery taproom, and from a 22oz bottle at home. taproom pour was from the 2018 version. Bottle year? Consumed 8/21/2020 and 8/22/2020. I think the draft pour tasted better and is slightly different. ABV is in the 10 to 12% range

Pours reddish brown body. A short fine head that lasted forever and keeps leaving lacing as you drink it.

    Smells good: cherry plum.

taste: cherry, plum, plus raisin/fig, slightly burnt toffee/caramel, maybe wood or earth. Smooth, just slightly sweet. A hint of bitterness towards the finish, Alcohol is very well hidden in the mouth even after it warms up some.

    a solid beer about a 4/5
