As a wild mushroom picker I am highly in favor of finding the most effective slug killing beer. I have grown to hate those little diseased menaces to fungi everywhere, and have taken more joy than I likely should have taken with your descriptions of their deaths.

For throwing at bands you don't like at an outdoor festival. I saw several acts canned off at the Reading Festival late 1970s, early 1980s. They had to be full to reach the stage and have any effect. Always thought it was a waste of beer. And effing dangerous if you were standing right in front of the stage.

That defines a tough crowd when they give up beer to vote their displeasure. I can't condone that stuff but do you recall if the bands were that bad to deserve that?

It's been well documented in the WBAYN forum that IPA's have been suggested, in fact encouraged strongly as hair care.

They also make great tempura batter and a nice leavening agent in bread.

Since we've decided to ignore the non-cooking particular of OP, I'd like to say that beer in a brine (go heavy on salt and sugar when you make your brine and then bring it up to normal strength with beer) or used to make fermented pickles (again, make the the brine heavy and dilute) can result in divine meat or pickles.

The little bit of alcohol helps everything reach deeper.

Are you talking pickled meat as in preserving it, or you're saying use as a marinade? Sounds flavorful either way.

Wayne County & the Electric Chairs. The crowd really hated them.

We were all knee-deep in mud , which may have made the crowd less tolerant.

Basically just sitting the meat in a flavored salt(and/or sugar)-water solution for a length of time for the cells in the meat to take on extra moisture and flavor due to osmosis. Leads to more tender and flavorful meat.

A marinade has an oil and maybe acid component to it to break down the cell structure itself, making it more tender and more apt to take on flavors.

Oh, hey, some competition! The slimy critters that I'm after and the fruit flies can slug it out over the beer.

Nothing drank either beer (Miller & Coors) again last night, and I didn't change the beers out, so this morning I had 4 slugs in the stale Miller Lite trap and none in the Coors Light. Over the few days when Miller and Coors were in the two traps, Miller got 9 slugs (3 nights because some critter drank it one night) and Coors got 12 (4 nights), so there is no clear winner in that comparison. I only bought a couple singles of each brand, so I'm out of both right now and don't know whether I'll get to the store today. I still need to compare one or the other to Bud, so I need to get more. I don't know what will be in the traps tonight, but both are so scummy that they badly need to be changed out. More news to come later.

Don't know about slugs but spumante, white zinfandel, or Moscato in a jar lid works well for catching fruit flies and gnats

After I posted above on Wednesday I did run out to the store and got more Coors Light and Miller Lite so I could compare them to Bud and finish off this 'competition' and declare a winner.

Results for the last 4 nights: Bud beat Coors Light, 4 to 3, and Bud also beat Miller Lite, 6 to 4. So Bud would seem to be the winner. However, in a post early in this thread I reported the results of the head-to-head between Bud and Stroh's, which was Stroh's 5 and Bud 4. So Stroh's is the grand champion!

But, because some beers had more nights in the traps than others, I also took the total kills for each brand and calculated a 'per night' score. These calculations also confirm Stroh's to be the champion slug bait. Slugs per night: Stroh's (3.33); Miller Lite (2.60); Coors Light (2.50); and Bud (2.33). So in the end, Bud turns out to be the least favored beer by the slugs.

I think I spent around $23 on beer during this 'scientific' study, so my tomatoes are a pricey commodity. However, all of the low-hanging fruits have been harvested and some that were harvested from the low branches of the plants were the biggest tomatoes that I've ever grown, and they were not ruined by these slimy critters. And I have plenty of tomatoes higher up on the plants that I don't think are at risk, so I'll be getting more fruits from each plant and ending my expensive trapping effort.

Moral: It's a trade-off of the cost of the beer vs. pride and satisfaction of growing nice fruits and winning out over the slugs. It's been entertaining!

P.S. No critter drank the beer again after those two nights-in-a-row incidents, so it's anyone's guess what animal to accuse of that. I hope they enjoyed my hospitality, but who doesn't like free beer?

I often read in these forums where someone says something like "Every beer has its time and place."
And I always think, "Really? What is the time and place for low calorie "light beers" like Bud Light, Miller Lite and Coors Light?"

And now I know: When your house is threatened by a forest fire and it's the only "fire extinguisher" you have.

(Damn, that reminds me. I never have any light beer in the house - time to get that fire extinguisher in the garage refilled/certified.)
