    Gritty is great
    There can be no debate
But when it comes to being the best
    He's 40 years too late
    [IMG]

The true champion is the one and only Philly Phanatic. Check out pretty much any list of the best mascots, and he'll be at the top of the list (including topping the list of mascots ranked in a fight)

He has been the gold standard of mascots for over 40 years. Gritty doesn't exist if there is no Philly Phanatic. He got Tommy Lasorda of the Dodgers so pissed off that Lasorda basically assaulted him (gif below was not part of a gag). He took out another mascot with a hot dog gun. I may expand on my argument later (need to actually do some work!), but for now, here is some visual support for my argument.

    p.s. Deb is 6'0"

Actually, the science seems to suggest Gritty and Youppi may in fact be related. Perhaps we are making two parts of the same argument?

    http://rabidhabs.com/the-forum-are-gritty-and-youppi-the-same-species/

(Paranthetically, one of the authors of this fine piece makes a good argument for the Phanatic, @Roy_Hobbs ).

Also, to quote some guy named Jean:

"Youppi! is a classy, old-school mascot with a solid mascot-ing pedigree, like that awesome uncle that would bring you to games when you were a kid," said Jean. "Gritty, on the other hand, is the uncle you don't want to sit next to at dinner because he'll get way to drunk and make inappropriate passes at your sister."

    Brothers?

I mean, I love the Phanatic too ... but what they did to him this year was a travesty ...

Damn, I missed out on all kinds of fun here the last few days. We had some brutal storms come through last week and I was without power for a number of days, and then had a busier than expected weekend. Luckily for someone in this thread though, I was out procuring some exciting local releases that some of which will find themselves to my target. Hopefully my target likes brews that spent some time in barrels.

I enjoyed reading everyone's stories for @Roy_Hobbs LIF, and I had planned to participate myself before the power issues threw a wrench into things. In the spirit of participation I'll share the story that I intended to share.

For many years after college I worked at a company that acted as a middleman for restaurants that didn't offer delivery on their own, but still wanted to deliver their food. Think GrubHub, but a locally owned mom and pop version contracting with local independent restaurants. I believe they were founded in the late 80's, but unfortunately no longer exist. It was a good run. This story takes place about 12-15 years ago. The way it worked is that the customers called our operators and placed their order with them. We then placed it with the restaurant. We also had a dispatcher in the office that told the drivers where to go and gave them the order information.

While working for a place like that, you get to know the regular customers. You recognize names and orders and faces. Some are friendly and make small talk while others pretend that they don't get delivery every day of the week. Then there are customers that become notorious.

Yael B, who ordered almost every day and never very much, was a woman in her mid-40's that lived alone with some cats. She also had an area in her basement where she cut and styled hair. Side note: I was only told of this area, I never saw it personally. You never knew what kind of mood Yael would be in when you showed up with her order. Sometimes she was happy and enthusiastic and friendly. Other days she seemed like you were bothering her and was annoyed at your existence. Some days she clearly fell asleep and only woke up after blowing up her phone for 5 minutes and pounding on the door.

Eventually it occurred to me that Yael had to be an alcoholic. This was eventually confirmed when she started answering the door obviously drunk more and more often. She was increasingly volatile on the phone with the operators and kind of a trip for the drivers to interact with. On her more bubbly days she asked the operator to send the cute driver that always wears the green hat. Well, that lucky driver was me. Because of this, the operators and dispatcher thought it'd be fun to constantly give me her orders to deliver.

This particular day Yael was in a good mood. She was chatty immediately. She never had her cash payment ready, so it was always the same routine. She's come to the door, chat, I'd tell her the total, and then wait for 5 minutes while she went looking for exact change. She finally came back with cash in hand, smiled, began to speak...and then it happened. It was as if time slowed down as I watched on of her top front teeth exit her mouth and begin it's approach. It toppled end over end arching through the air, hit me right in the chest, and descend to the deck outside of her front door. We looked at each other in shock for a moment before she dropped to her knees to find the now fugitive tooth. She found it within seconds and placed it back into the gap as she stood up. I took her money and walked back to my car briskly trying to contain the laughter building in my chest. I drove away cracking up and recounting the story to my co-workers over our two-way radios. I was given a reprieve in delivering Yael's orders for awhile after that experience, but still had to go back on occasion when I was the only driver available. She was eventually banned from the service for bouncing a number of checks.

I'll have to give some thought to my mascot answer.
Thanks very much, man. That means a lot coming from someone that's been around here far longer than myself. This site, and more specifically the NBS/NBW threads, gives me a much larger appreciation for beers as a whole even if not everything I try is up my alley. The review in particular that you're referring to is a great example of why BA is so fantastic compared to most of the current forums. East End's Gratitude has a score of 3.99 on Untappd as opposed to BA having it ranked as the #12 American Barleywine. There is just so much more knowledge and appreciation here, and I'm thrilled and grateful to have found my way to BA and the NBS/NBW BIF brood. :beers:

But, but, more than one person is promising to send barrel aged goodness, how can I not request them all?
    :-)
I've enjoyed every beer I've ever gotten from the fine people on this site, many beers I *never* would have thought to pick out on my own, and not a dud in the bunch. I promise to be happy with whomever. As long as the person I'm sending to also likes barrel aged goodness. If not, I'll have to go buy more beer.

Right, I forgot to post the 5:00 PM run down-
For the second time, Nope. But appreciate your efforts!
Sorry, wrong, but something about a Mrs Lizard really wanted that to be right.
    And a late Addition:
Gotta love wild guesses! But nope.

Is that everyone that's going to try? If so, I guess you can each have a second go. Why not?

Maybe a clue will help. One guess was only off 1 inch (That's 2.54 cm for @Coronaeus) of her height, but only one guess. Two guesses were only off by 2 inches.

So who is good with numbers? :-)
