The definitive source for all things beer: Untappd.

What beer do think is the closest to what they serve in the Munchen tents?

Paulaner Wiesn & Weihenstephaner Festbier. Both on the lighter side.

I believe Hofbrau’s and Paulaner’s Oktoberfest Bier (called Wiesn in previous years) are actually what they do serve in the tents.

I’ve been lucky enough to have both at the tents in Munich. I remember when I got back I ordered Paulaner’s at Olde Magoun’s and it tasted just like it did in Munich.

But in a nutshell as @SunDevilBeer said, it’s the pale Oktoberfest style that they serve at the tents in Munich. The switch from amber to pale at Oktoberfest began at some point in the 90s.

From the CBC Facebook page: Fall Fest is coming up on Oct 16. A little bit Pumpkinfest. A little bit Oktoberfest. (Emphasis mine)

Hi fans of CBC’s Great Pumpkin Fest! Regrettably we won’t be having this event this year because, well it’s 2020... But fear not, we’re not just sitting around. Nope, no way. Alternatively we bring you…Fall Fest! Not to be confused with its older brother the Great Pumpkin Fest, but able to fill in admirably we think.

Fall Fest will be a socially distanced, table service only event featuring up to 16 different Oktoberfest-inspired lager beers plus new and vintage CBC Pumpkin beers. Chef Dave has created an all-day menu to complement the beers and there might even be a cornstalk or two around. No late-night appearance by the Great Pumpkin but hopefully a great time all things considered. Reservations strongly recommended. Starting Friday Oct 16th at 4:00pm and again all day Saturday the 17th. Stay tuned for more details!

    Prosit!!

Picked up a 6 pack of Weihenstephaner Festbier. Nice and light. Could certainly see myself crushing these watching some football

    That sucks, I’m sorry man.

Then again, you’ve probably experienced more Oktoberfests in Munich than every Beeradvocate combined.

Tried the ‘Gansett Fest Marzen Lager tonight.

Nice price, $10 for a 6-pack of pounders.

Dark, caramelly malty version of the Ofest. Very drinkable, smooth.

Very flavorful version, but being left behind in the more drinkable versions of festbiers.

Tonight I had passed up the Gansett tonight in favor of Gunner's Daughter...which tasted exactly like a 16 oz can of unflavored seltzer with a peanut shell or two thrown in. Awesome. I had the Spaten OF earlier this week, I'd say that also falls into the very flavorful vs. drinkable categorization.

Has anyone seen BBC Life on Marzen lately? Wachusett any good this year?

Don't think it helps you, but I picked up Life of Marzen at Total Wine Natick a week or so ago. Liked it, but it's heftier than most for sure.

Drinks like a marzen doppelbock.....if that was a category.

Sawbelly Brewery in Exeter NH is having an Oktoberfest over 2 weekends. Been a few times & enjoyed their IPAs, but have no idea how their lagers are. I went to an outdoor event there a month ago, was pretty chill with decent bands (I know, remember live music & actually having fun?). People were pretty distanced outside & strict mask enforcement inside.

Side note - the food there is pretty great too.

Grabbed a six of Paulaner for $8 in Seabrook tonite. Absolutely delicious. Just a great beer. And seriously, it had to take a fricken boat from Germany to get into my hands and it’s still just $8. Lovely stuff.

I actually find it to be even sweeter than a Doppelbock. I like it, but it could be a tad drier.

    Which one?

The Marzen is my favorite amber Oktoberfest this year by FAR. And I’ve had quite a few already, both imported and domestic.

I’ll be grabbing a few more 6s before the weekend is out

Finally got my hands on the Paulaner (pale version) and it jumped right up to a tie with Weihenstephaner for me. Looking forward to doing a head to head in the Oktoberfest tasting thread next weekend.

Cool stubby bottles too. My memory is that these came in more standard tall-ish bottles in the past, correct?

    Agreed.
I group Berkshire's in with Sam Adam's Octoberfest as the two marzens that aren't really what I want in a marzen but I like them as their own animal anyway.

Strong endorsement my friend. Will definitely be in the list for this weekend along with another Hoffbrau mini-keg. It is opening NFL Sunday after all & I’m not going to Magoun’s.

    Definitely my favorite beer season.
