Being married and having a kid severely limits my ability to go out to bars, reading the thread about the vast majority of people drinking at home got me thinking, is it wrong to take your kids to a bar? Now I am not talking about a restaurant that happens to have a bar, I am talking about a straight up beer bar. (this does not apply to dive/sketchy bars where there would be any potential danger to your kids)

A few months ago I took my wife and daughter out to one because they were tapping a keg of Classic Gueuze (didn't actually get any but that is a different story) and I'll be honest I actually felt strange about it. Even had someone knock over the stroller that was parked next to the table.

So my question is do you take your kids? If so do you get looks (not that you'd care, just asking)? If you do not have kids do you feel them being in your local watering hole diminishes your experience (assuming they aren't screaming or being bad, which obviously would annoy anyone, I am talking about just being there being kids)?

Toronado SD allows kids. I bring mine. I couldn't give a fuck what anyone there thinks. I'm a customer, and Toronado SD welcomes kids. The end.

PS: They love Toro's Mac N' Cheese!

Depends on the state and local laws. In Indiana, you can't have a child in a bar (unless things have changed in the last 30 years).

I do not take my kids. I do not need to have a beer badly enough that I drag them along.

Depends on the time of day and atmosphere. Brewpub, Yard House, or something along those lines with a family friendly atmosphere - sure - pretty much any time before bedtime is fine. I do that all the time, largely just to eat though.

A "bar bar" where they don't even really serve food and may have a dark atmosphere and/or loud music? Eh - during the day maybe if it's not busy for a quick drink and we're out and about in the area, but I'd probably find an alternative. Example of a Boston bar like this would be a place like Bukowski's downtown.

Easy: take your kid with you, lock them in the car while you patronize the establishment, then drive home. Cheers!

I can't stand it when people bring their children to a bar. I have had several conversations (be it somewhat heated ones) with people that have brought their kids to a few bars I frequent. Especially when there is smoking going on. How healthly for a child is that? I've seen it all even newborns, which really gets me steamed. So the verdict for me would be that I hate it when chuildren are present at a bar whether they are quite or not.

Maybe I should go, and bring them. I need a good designated driver for the way home anyway. So what if the oldest is 4?

Kids don't belong in bars IMO.

I don't think it's that weird, then again, I live in Wisconsin so it's not that uncommon to see..

California is the same way - no kids in bars. Even bars that serve food, there's some rules around that. I used to live near a beer bar in LA and I could bring my kids in before 7pm when they were classified as a "restaurant" but not after 7pm because they were then considered a "bar." Not sure if the timing was self-imposed or statutory, but I found that interesting.

I'm with evilc though, if a place allows it, who cares. My wife and I brought our twins into the abovementioned bar one time in the early evening (before 7pm) in Baby Bjorns and people gave us odd looks, but we didn't care. Plus we knew the owner and beer manager so they made sure we felt comfortable with our kids.

    ^ this.
If it has a food menu and its before 7pm, no problem. Depends on the time and place. There is no one rule, IMHO.

Kids don't belong in bars. That said, my grandfather used to take me to the bar with him every Sunday after church when I was a young'n. To this day, these remain among my most treasured memories. I used to enjoy a Green Spot orange soda while I played the weird pinball machine with the bingo cards and no flippers (sometimes I'd even win money playing the 'juke' and I'd spend my winnings at the superette next door, usually on baseball cards or penny candies). In summary, I don't want your kids at the bar now...but I enjoyed being in bars when I was a kid.

I will take my kids into bars, given that very few bars are without food. Of course you won't see me there at 10pm with them, if it is 7pm and there is a special release I will bring them, have one and go. iPad's make this type of operation possible though.

Also, in my opinion I don't ask / expect that adults act differently. Bars are for adults and I just explain to the kids honestly what they see. Better they see and understand than not.

I think the term "bar" is loose. A seedy, dark bar versus a San Diego local craft brew establishment with excellent food that is welcoming to kids?

If your kids enjoy the place and the food, who cares?

My kids (2 boys) are 25 and 21 so I can take them to beer bars...
problem is, they can drink me under the table and empty my wallet in a hurry!
