I am partial to Piraat and Gulden Draak beers. Am looking for recommendations for something along these lines to try. Time for some new things.
I suggest that you explore other beers within those styles. Which are Belgian IPA, Belgian Strong Pale Ale, Quadrupel (Quad) and Belgian Strong Dark Ale. Go for the ones in the Top 50. https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/174/ - Belgian IPA https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/55/ - Belgian Strong Pale Ale https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/142/ - Quadrupel (Quad) https://www.beeradvocate.com/beer/styles/56/ - Belgian Strong Dark Ale
Both of these beers come from Brouwerij Van Steenburge, which produces other great beers, so perhaps explore further within this brewery. Gulden Draak 9000 is an excellent Quad, for example.
Duvel--A hallmark Belgian Strong Pale Ale that is Piraat's less boozy and more balanced cousin. Rochefort 8/10--Classic Trappists St. Bernardus Abt. 12--Ditto--and my personal favorite. Boulevard--The Sixth Glass--One of my favorite American takes on the Belgian strong dark ale. Omegang--Gnomegang--Ditto, except on the Belgian strong pale ale front North Coast--Pranqster--A relatively inexpensive and very approachable BSPA. Monk's Brew--Mikkeller--A sweeter take on the BSDA.
Brilliant. This is what I was hoping for... response with experience. Presents comparisons which is excellent. I will give some of these a go. In particular, the more balanced Piraat idea is appealing. Will report back tho no question I am not practiced in the language of BeerAdvocate, but I am always in pursuit of beer. Tastes have changed dramatically over the years.... I can hardly touch mediocre beer, and almost all of the offerings are beyond mediocre. tx
By the way all the answers you're looking for are available on this website. There was no need to start a thread. Figured I'd help you out a little, since you don't know how to navigate around here. Simply by clicking those links, you can easily see/tell which beers you should try next. People's reviews and ratings are there to help. And how many times each beer has been rated/reviewed, tells you how popular it is.
Obviously, the Belgian breweries make some of the best, but I also think Allagash makes really good Belgian Strong Pale Ales (Victor and Confluence), especially on tap if you can find it.
