[IMG] Up a little early today and decided to kick this thread off early. I like having the entire weekend to review some new suds. This has been my favorite weekly thread for many years and I think the transition is going very well. This thread is for us beer nerds to give input about the New Beer that they are drinking. We want you to take a little extra time when sipping and break down your experience with that beer.

Kettlehead just keeps brewing new beers and this is another one this week. Poured into a 16 oz can shaped pint glass canned on 9/8/2020. Pours a hazy yellow with a finger plus sticky white head that leaves massive thick streaks of lace, with amazing retention as it slowly settles into a thin layer of bubbles.4.5

Smell pineapple, coconut, passionfruit, a hint of garlic, melon, lemon lime, and apricot. Slightly different from many NEDIPAs and I am liking it. 4.25

Taste follows pineapple and coconut immediately step up followed by passionfruit, honeydew, lemon lime, and some hints of garlic and apricot in the long lingering lip smacking finish. I like how it sets itself apart from other beers they have brewed. 4.25

Mouthfeel is soft with gentle carbonation, but not flat really a trade mark of a proper NEDIPA, a tad sticky but not dry, a solid medium body, and at 8% it goes down really easy. 4.75

Overall this place keeps brewing new and innovative brews and I appreciate that they are always trying to make better beer and taking chances. I would without question purchase more of this if the release it again. Cheers all and let’s roll out some pages this weekend. 4.25

Have a good NBW. Seems like this week was the turning point of my next tour of life. I matched and been texting with someone from okcupid over the last few days. Then yesterday I get an email from Superior Dairy in Canton Ohio for a machine/design/innovation engineering position, I had missed it from three days ago but they replied immediately for a phone screen on Monday afternoon. Still putting a lot of time into the dating apps to see what I get right now. Keeping my options open.

Boulevard Phantom Haze. Awesome DIPA. Great fluffy head retention/thick foamy lacing. Aromas and flavors of big mandarin orange, red grapefruit, lemon, lime, peach, pineapple, apricot, mango, honeydew melon, pear, red apple, papaya, berries, citrus peel/rind, peppercorn, pine, wheat, biscuit dough, light toast/honey, and herbal/floral/grassy earthiness. Light pine, citrus peel/rind, herbal, floral, grassy, peppery bitterness; and wheat tang on the finish. Medium carbonation and medium-plus body; very smooth, creamy/bready malts, some sticky hops, and light resins/rinds in the mouthfeel. Lightly increasing dryness from lingering bitterness. Minimal warming 7.5% or hop burn after the finish. Really impressive NE-ish effort. Citra, Idaho 7, Amarillo, Strata, Calypso, Cascade, El Dorado, Galaxy, Mosaic, Ekuanot hops. Super juicy, vibrant, and fairly dank/earthy hops; with a nice sized wheat/oat malt backbone. Light residual sweetness with lingering bitterness. 4.1

Good day BAs! This weekend will be dedicated to a retaliatory Ninja strike from @foundersasap (when I'm not processing squash from the garden (zucchini and tomatoes are done)). Green peppers are suddenly everywhere and the butternuts are starting again with new blossoms. So this morning's New (to me, at least) Breakfast Beer is:

Received 9/8/20 in a Ninja box from @foundersasap. Reviewed 9/12/20. Thanks Jeff!
Date on bottom lip of can “PACKAGED ON 07/28/20”. Stored at home at 42 degrees and served at 45 degrees in a hand washed and dried Jester King snifter.
    Appearance – 4.
First pour – Pale gold (SRM 4), slight haze.
Body – Deep Gold (SRM 6), murky. When held to direct light, hazy and translucent. Unfiltered.
Head – Large (Maximum six cm, aggressive center pour), off-white, high density with a few rocks, average duration, diminishing to an five to eight mm crown with prominences up to 20 mm, and a thick partial cap of varying thickness.
    Lacing – Good.
Aroma – 4 – Floral hops followed by a bit of caramelly malt. No yeast.
Flavor – 4 – Taste doesn’t follow nose. Slightly bitter with overtones of pineapple (lacking the acidity) and some generic fruitiness. No alcohol (7% ABV, as marked on the label) taste or aroma. Ends with a bit of dankness. No diacetyl or dimethylsulfide.
Palate – 3.5 – Medium, heading down the road to syrupy, lively carbonation.
Final impression and summation: Rounding up to 4. Palate is a bit too syrupy for an IPA or anything with the tag “farmhouse” IMHO, but otherwise another tasty and interesting brew from Brewery Vivant.
    Rating 3.95, rDev +2.3%.

    It’s good to have friends!

So, today’s beer has a bit of a backstory. Last month Hurricane Isaias (which was downgraded to a Tropical Storm) hit our area. In the middle of the morning my wife received a frantic phone call from our friend Karen: “Hurry over, bring buckets!” then click. We immediately went over with buckets (and mops) in hand. We received a lot (nearly 8 inches) of rain over a short period of time (2-3 hours) and they had severe flooding in their basement (luckily in an area which had no carpeting). We were basically running a bucket brigade from the basement to the nearest sink which was upstairs in their kitchen. A lot of work but there was four of us so relatively easily managed. I was reminded of the part of the movie Fantasia: The sorcerer’s apprentice.

Well, recently our friends Karen & Carl went for a short vacation to the Adirondacks (Lake Placid area) and they kindly bought us a 12-pack of Lake Placid Big Slide IPA and a 6-pack of Ubu as a thank you for the help we provided. Today I will be drinking the Lake Placid Big Slide IPA.

A brief description of this beer from the website:

    “Big Slide I.P.A.

American-style I.P.A, this is a big, slightly piney brew in tribute to both the 27th High Peak and our ski jumps, which rise high above the trees. Here's to the heights! 7.0% ABV, 70 IBU.”

    Let’s drink!

Served in my Speigelau IPA glass:

    Appearance:

Golden colored with a BIG white head.

    Aroma:

The aroma is a vibrant combination of pine & resin but there is a hint of floral character in the background.

    Taste:

The flavor follows with mostly pine and resin but not nearly a vibrant on the palate vs. the nose, with some sweetish maltiness. There is a notable bitterness.

    Mouthfeel:

This beer is medium bodied with a dry finish.

    Overall:

I really enjoyed drinking this beer! This beer had a pleasing combination of hop aromas/flavors and the sweetish maltiness provided a semblance of balance to this beer. Thank you Karen & Carl.

    Cheers!

Before I get to some beer shopping (prepping for the NBS BIF), let me crack open my first new beer of the weekend. This was a birthday gift from my parents, right from my home town (although Google says they are temporarily closed; I don't know if this is based on pandemic restrictions, or if they are unlikely to reopen): Biscayne Bay Brewery Siren's Saison:

Wow! OK then. Let it sit for a bit (OK, for a while), second pour, and ....

    That's better.

I should disclose that I don't have a strong impression of Biscayne Bay Brewery. My first (and only other) beer by them, La Colada coffee porter, was massively disappointing to me, and barely worth finishing (3.14 / -20.3%). It suffered from an absolutely poor appearance with tons of floaties, and perhaps the even greater sin was that it tasted virtually nothing like a Colada.

On the nose, this beer is surprising. A touch of citrus, some bubblegum and pear, honey; there's also a bit of clove and banana. It almost smells like a cross between a saison and a Hefeweizen.

On the palate, that is absolutely not the case. Not only is it a saison, it's a slightly funky saison. There's no mention of Brett on the bottle, but it has a very similar yeast expression (the brewery's website only refers to the yeast as "an authentic Belgian yeast").

Very lightly tart, with an emphasis on pale grains and mustiness. Hops, malt, and yeast all play a part in the flavor experience. It's really, really enjoyable. At 6.9% ABV, it falls into the high end of saisons (above Saison DuPont, but below Hennepin), and consequently it's a little bigger bodied - but it's still lively and maintains a touch of dryness.

I wouldn't repurchase La Colada. I would definitely repurchase this.

Added by Act 25. Hazy Imperial IPA bill. Cannot believe I'm the first to buy this best of Voodoo and also Zombie Dust at WFM. Hope this trend continues.
    a) Suitable hazed golden body with fluffy, lasting, lacing white head.
    s) Floral more than citric, tea-like, melon, chalky, balanced.
    t) Follows smell, very floral, more melon, melon green rind -
    f) Chalky yet fresh and juicy, interesting texture. ABV well hidden but I prefer less abv myself.
    o) The best of the Rangers.

Finally, the #1 in my favorite #1 style _ APA _ arrives reasonably priced in cans at WFM.
    a) A for appearance with a non-stop white blanketing head over a hazed copper apricot body.
    s) Floral, like you just came in from the garden, citrus blossoms more than flesh,
    t) Found taste bigger than aroma, ripe, juicy, round flavors of citrus, blossoms, flower store, brought home with a pungent, piney, hoppy, peppery finale that battles juicy sweet fruit vs cleansing pepper and pine.
    f) Semi-sweet smooth bitterness sprouting a crisp dry finish.
    o) Wins over the competition, bright and memorable, will return for many more 6's now that it's available in WFM.

I dont feel this is a bastardization of a classic. It works for me.
    a) Hazed, vibrant head, loads of lace.
    s) Gin, juniper, bright yeast, tropical backdrop.
    t) Juniper, gin couple with fruit salad of pineapple, mango and guava, then a peppery, lemony finish.
    f) slippery, mid peppery bitter, clean finish, tongue delight.
    o) Love the bright big peppery finish.

Thank you @SawDog505 for kicking things off for NBW 7 / NBS 812! Hope everyone has some good weekend plans and a few new beers set aside to explore and enjoy. Have a beer planned for each of the next two days, my try a third depending on how things go. Have a bunch planned for next week's Oktoberfest tasting thread.

Lake Effect Small Batch School of Brett - Brett Bruxellensis 2 OYL-221 Strain is the beer I'm kicking things off with today on another rainy cold day in Chicago.

Tale of the tape: This is beer four of a four part series. Saison beers aged for 8 months in unidentified red wine barrels. One saison was issued as a base beer, the other three had different Brettanomyces added. This is the second of two with Bruxellensis, the review for the first of two is linked here. Will I detect any differences? We shall see.

Appearance: Light golden straw body, lighter than the other Bruxellensis offering, generous bubbly white head lasts for a few minutes before dissipating, leaving nominal isolated lacing. 4.25

Aroma: Very bold and pleasant funky aroma, lemon, citrus, grape and grass. Sweeter and more pronounced than the other Bruxellensis strain. 4.25

    Taste:
Similar to the aroma, though less pronounced. Primarily grape, lemon and citrus, light lemongrass backing, hint of butter as well. 3.75

    Mouthfeel:
Very thin mouthfeel, fine light fizzy carbonation lingers throughout, mild tartness, sweet, easy clean finish. 3.5

    Overall:
This is a good saison, very similar to the base, though I preferred the offering with the OYL-215 Bruxellensis strain. taste. Good offering. 3.75

Looking forward to reading your beer ideas and experiences as the weekend unfolds. Cheers everyone!

After a day of sim racing, time to dive into some beer. This is Sommar (Summer) IPA by Oppigårds, who are, in my opinion, the steadiest brewery in Sweden, maybe Europe. You always know that what they make is clean, well made and true to style. It's usually not earth shattering, but always worth the purchase. This is, of course their summer release, and I'll be having it to celebrate the hopeful death of the heat.

Sommar IPA weighs in at 6%, is made with pilsner, Münchner and wheat malt, and hopped with Columbus, Cashmere, Ekuanot and Simcoe.

Pours a semi clear vibrant orange with about a finger of fluffy, soft head. 4.25

Smell is fruity and a bit floral, with notes of oranges, lemon peel, lemongrass and a hint of toast. 4

Taste is very well balanced, with a crisp, crackery malt base, with some hints of toasted white bread anchoring bright, floral and fruity notes, with elements of citrus, pine, spruce, lemon zest and a hint of Swedish soda Trocadero. Solid bitterness, with a slight hint of soap on the end. The finish is quite dry and resinous. 4.25

Mouthfeel is medium, sticky and well carbonated. 4.25

Overall, exactly what I expect from an Oppigård IPA. Great balance, crisp, clean and full of flavor. 4.25, overall score 4.19.

This week is the first I have seen this around me, which is a little odd. Normally I would have had at least a 12 pack down by now. I look forward to this every year.

Pours a beautifully clear burnt orange color. A dense white head rises to over two fingers. Good retention and plenty of lace.
Aroma is sourdough and crusty bread up front and really inviting. A little bit of yeasty peppery spice, with a floral and fruity hop finish.
Taste up front I get just a touch of baked bread, but not as inviting as the nose was. That fades to sweetness and burnt brown sugars. A fruity hop character lingers on, and is almost grape like. Just a touch of bitterness.
A medium body with moderate carbonation. This is very clean as well. Enjoyable to drink and I will be getting more of this while in season.

I always look forward to their Oktoberfest release each year. This is definitely good and enjoyable. Though seems more Americanized than previous years, which makes sense as I don't think this one is a collaboration. No bother, I'll still enjoy it as is, even if this is not masterpieces some of the collaborations have been in the past.

Tile 692, a New England IPA by German brewery Blech.Brut (7.1% ABV).

Pours a hazy, deep orange coloration with a medium, fluffy head and some large floaters on final pour. Smells of biscuity malt and tropical/citrus hops, with notes of passion fruit, pineapple and grapefruit, as well as a certain herbal accent.

Taste is a great balance of biscuity malt and tropical, citrus and stone fruit hops, being dominated by sweet, tropical passion fruit and pineapple notes and lighter peach and grapefruit, as well as distinct herbal element, reminiscent of sage or mint coming through in the aftertaste. Finishes with a very light bitterness and some passion fruit, peach and sage lingering in the aftertaste. Soft mouthfeel with a medium body and carbonation.

This is not named "Tile 692" for nothing, after the experimental HBC 692 hop variety that lends a distinct sage note to this, while only being one tile in the mosaic of flavours here, with Galaxy bringing passion fruit, BRU-1 pineapple, El Dorado peach and Citra grapefruit to the table. There really is a great array of different, juicy fruit flavours to this, while dominated by tropical fruit, but I will also say that it is a bit too sweet for my personal taste overall, with very little discernible bitterness coming through here. Also, the relatively large amount of chunky sediment floating at the bottom of the glass here really is a little off-putting.

Good morning New Beer Friends. This is my first new beer of an extended weekend. We're about to drive a couple hours to a waterfront AirBnB where we'll be staying until Tuesday, and I plan to drink a lot of beer.
Last weekend, I introduced a friend to Beef Wellington and a wide variety of whiskies. He brought me a few beers, including "Not A Scientist" a double IPA from Cloudburst. It's apparently not just new to me, but also new to BA, since I had to add it to the database.
Before covid19, Cloudburst didn't package at all. It seems right now they're canning, but they have generic style labels and they print a beer name as part of the date stamp (which I greatly appreciate they provide). I have little data to base this on, so I appreciate any corrections.

16oz can dated 20-08-27. Pours hazy pale with a medium sized head, medium to low visible carbonation. Smell is bright tropical juice and maybe a hint of alcohol.

Taste is juice and a terrific blast resin, booze is certainly noticeable in the background but not dominating. Pine comes out with a second sip. Strong bitterness and not quite as strong sweetness.

Mouthfeel is medium to thick, moderate effervescence. This is a really nice beer.
